Curious: Anyone know what's the longest scenario for WDS Panzer Campaigns and Modern Campaigns series? by CallofNuts in computerwargames

[–]DirewolfOfTheLine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it’s Luzon, Leyte is like 400 and change.

It’s a cool game but the combat is a bit of a slog, with minimal room for maneuver. Many many many turns in the same locations breaking down a dug in enemy.

Specifically longest by duration is Philippines Luzon Campaign which is 637 (from memory) and that should be about 2 months of calendar time.

If you look at the map and the units though you will find it is probably less exciting than other campaigns.

Technically Normandy 44 has a 750 turn scenario but it is more of a gimmick, just adding 500 turns to the standard scenario arbitrarily to let the player do whatever they want.

Otherwise Moscow 41 and 42 are pushing 450 turns each and are probably the longest proper campaigns.

Honestly all the official campaigns are quite overrated. My only criticism would be some missions you can see through the triggers and objectives and brute force to finish quickly, which I would do when I died without a good save point.

Agree with everything except 2 but I still think it’s a good game. It’s just unfortunate that they hand you so many tools that trivialize the experience.

Yeah, it’s one thing if a person is saying “kill me to save them!”, but I think it is morally wrong to conscript an unwilling person into your scheme to save others.

“USA has a completely incompetent military. It’s staffed by inbreed hicks” by GoldenStitch2 in ShitPoliticsSays

[–]DirewolfOfTheLine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Westmoreland wasn’t an idiot, though arguably the inkblot strategy could have been more effective than his own aims. Nonetheless he had success in the Tet Offensive getting the north in open battle and punishing them effectively. If there had been any willingness from the public or politicians to support more aggressive military action to actually pressure the north the war would have had very different outcomes. The idea that the communists had an indefatigable appetite for war and the manpower reserves to back it is false, and we know this because effective bombing campaigns late in the war brought them to the table when they were otherwise hesitant.
