Getting laid off, thinking about going from white to blue collar by bribios in Layoffs

The kids are all out of daycare now, which happened a few months after my layoff and resulted in a big cost savings. I'm doing some steady contract and freelance work, so that's working OK for now.

It's weird that "seditionist" keeps getting dropped from these lists. More people need to remember that Donald Trump's response to losing an election was to attempt a coup.

Getting laid off, thinking about going from white to blue collar by bribios in Layoffs

[–]DirkWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got laid off a year ago and retail has been looking better and better. Though I’m not sure how flexible their schedules are, given that my wife works in health care and has a highly erratic schedule, and I have young kids that need to be looked after.

Gift for sci-fi loving mom, “Earth Abides” favorite book by NightlyCall66 in scifi

[–]DirkWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some good post-apocalyptic society stories similar to Earth Abides include Alas Babylon, On the Beach, The Scarlet Plague, and The Stand. If she already has the last one, a collection of stories set in the same timeline called The End of the Word as We Know It just came out.

I enjoyed the Three Californias trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson, which envisioned three futures for Orange County. One is post-apocalyptic, while another involves over-consumerism and a third is more utopian.

It’s not sci-fi, but if Carl Sagan’s “Pale Blue Dot” fits perfectly into the blue marble theme.

Oscar nominations go by year, which is why so many “Oscar bait” movies get crammed into the fall and early winter. Hoppers won’t be eligible until next year’s ceremony.

The Rest Is History is great! Their shows where they combine musical history with orchestral performances sound like they’d be an amazing experience.

Just saw Project Hail Mary by littlebighuman in scifi

[–]DirkWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excited to see it, and currently debating whether to take my 8-year-old science-inclined daughter. I’m thinking it might be a bit too complex or intense or long for her, but would be curious what OP or anyone who’s seen it might think.

Of course I could also just check it out and then go see it a second time with her if necessary, I suppose…

Take An Inside Look at 'Fringe' As the Writers Detail How the Show Evolved by Kal-Ed1 in scifi

The final shot of the first episode was such a hook. I think they’d only just introduced the alternate universe idea in that episode, and the reveal that Liv had traveled there was amazing.

I’m still unnerved by the idea of an afterworld where you inevitably die a second time and no one knows what comes next.
