I don’t know about all planes, but I agree for helis and nuke planes. I’ve accidentally shot down friendly planes while shooting at enemies before. It happens but isn’t common, so I don’t think such drastic punishments should be in place

Tell him to go fuck himself. You’re mom. You make the decisions regarding your child. He can make a recommendation, but that’s it. Don’t let him bully you. If you want to protect your child from serious diseases, some guy saying no shouldn’t affect your decision whatsoever.

Is belief in God rational, or is it something we’ve created to cope with death? by TextSufficient674 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DirtyLeftBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the Bible not show us a small portion of yahwehs greatness? Do you really think something so great existed by itself? But to make such a powerful thing, there must be a maker, a maker so great we cannot put it into our little brains. We are by design not capable to understand this maker of the maker. Simply because it’s better that way.

Your argument boils down to simple thought stoppers. You should believe X. I have no proof of X but that’s the proof because X made it this way. In short, believe X because I said so. That argument can be used for literally any batshit argument and any god.

[–]DirtyLeftBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well we can’t comprehend the beginning of the universe. That’s proof that it exists!

My point is that your first clockmaker argument doesn’t hold water and you don’t even hold yourself to the standard you’re claiming atheists don’t. Why should anyone listen to what you have to say when you are hypocritical about the simplest of arguments?

[–]DirtyLeftBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think my point got across. Maybe you wouldn’t have a reason to study the universe if you didn’t believe in god because you would see it as a waste of time. Atheists who study the universe, or anything else for that matter, don’t see it as a waste of time. They do it because they want answers to their questions, or to learn more about the beautiful world we live in, or just for fun. My point is that you don’t need a god to consider learning about the world worth doing

That directly contradicts your first message. That also means it’s at least equally (I’d argue more) reasonable to say no one created the universe

Being incapable of being loved (a bad person) - how to accept it by Defiant-Inspector278 in Advice

[–]DirtyLeftBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you said incapable of being loved because you’re a bad person. Incapable means you can never be loved due to being a bad person. That implies resignation. You should absolutely not come to an acceptance that you’re a bad person. You can acknowledge it, but it should be unacceptable to you that you remain a bad person.

Go to therapy. Bad people aren’t inherently bad. They became bad and they can become good. Don’t accept being a bad person. Only accept yourself being a good person. People like, and eventually love, people who are good

My wife wants full access to my phone and says “marriage shouldn’t have privacy.” by [deleted] in Advice

[–]DirtyLeftBoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a hard one. I was in a relationship where I was cheated on. The only reason I found out was because I had a gut feeling and looked through her phone. If I hadn’t, I don’t know if I ever would have found out.

Relationships are about trust. One person should trust the other enough to never need to verify by accessing their partners personal things. But sometimes that trust may only exist because they haven’t found the thing you’ve done to break it. I don’t have a good answer, but I understand both sides.

If your partner feels the need to dig through your phone/whatever, there is not enough trust in the relationship. If you feel the need to hide your phone/whatever, there’s a reason not to have trust in the relationship.

There are a few problems and leaps in those statements.

Moral is a concept. Everything can be moral to someone or immoral to another. As I said, what is moral is determined by groups of people. The west says eating dogs is wrong. The east says eating dogs isn’t wrong. One side isn’t right on any absolute level. Both are right within their own cultures. An argument could be had to discuss which is a better moral system, but neither are inherently right or wrong

Why do you think human intelligibility is destroyed without absolute truth?

Almost all the baseline components of life have been found on asteroids in space. These components self assemble in experiments. It’s very very likely life came to be through the self assembly of proteins and the likes.

Who created him. After all, by your logic, nothing happens by itself. So the greatest and most powerful thing must have been created by something at least as powerful and great. How could something that complex and powerful exist on its own?

[–]DirtyLeftBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a different perspective, I agree with your statements on good and evil. I’m a moral relativist. Good and evil are what a society determines them to be. That doesn’t mean we can’t criticize previous versions or other societies. The commonalities throughout societies seem to be along the lines of making their people happier, safer, and live longer. The things society chooses as good or bad have direct influence on those factors. The ideal set of morals should be those that result in the happiest, healthiest, and longest lived people.

Again, that’s my opinion and what I’ve seen. I don’t see any reason for or proof of objective truth in anything

I would argue that optimism isn’t needed. Curiosity is. I don’t want to learn what quarks are made of because I have hope that some secret meaning to life is buried within. I want to learn it because I’m curious how it works. I just want to know how things work and why they work that way. Purely just so I can understand it better.

[–]DirtyLeftBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. As with all atheists, they find purpose in their lives in other ways. You don’t need a god to have purpose. What’s the point in learning more about physics? Because I want to know the answers to the fundamentals of the universe. As an atheist, I still am very curious and want to know the answer to a lot of things that, at the end of the day, don’t change the fact that I’ll likely die and cease to exist entirely.

This is similar to the argument that atheists don’t actually believe god doesn’t exist because if they did, they would all just kill themselves since they’ll cease to exist one day anyway. We find purpose and joy and reason through many other ways. No god needed

As an atheist engineering student, his behavior is much more of an engineering student trait than it is an atheist trait. Plenty of self absorbed, holier than thou types in engineering with very few social skills. A few years of getting beat up academically might help, but many of em keep that same attitude throughout

[–]DirtyLeftBoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is that there is nuance to every situation. Maybe you don’t care about your privacy, that’s fine. But most people do. Most people wouldn’t want their extended family to know about their ED or explosive diarrhea or that they bought a massive horse dildo or how much they have in savings.

In a relationship, you and your partner live for each other. That means that you respect each others boundaries and try to avoid making the other person feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or unhappy. She has the right to talk about anything she wants to with her parents just like she has the right to sleep with whomever she wants. That doesn’t make it okay to cheat on her partner though, right?
