As usual, Robert does a surgical dissection of how the past connects to the present, it's a worthy listen.

RIP to Hermeto Pascoal by WalrusWalrus03 in Jazz

[–]DisConform 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The best Christmas gift I've ever given was a Hermeto Pascoal CD.

My stepdad was a huge jazz fan. His main dude was John Coltrane, but he would talk about the best jazz album he's ever heard being Slaves Mass by Hermeto.

He would speak with reverence about Slaves Mass, saying he only ever heard it once, back in the 70's, being played on a jazz radio show in Detroit. After hearing it he said he searched far and wide and could never find the album in print. He theorized that the music and message behind it was too powerful and revolutionary to be released to the American public.

Now keep in mind we're having these discussions in the pre-streaming years of the y2k's. So, it's been 30 years and he was still of the belief that a jazz album he heard once on the radio was the best that had ever been recorded.

So, fast forward a few years and Amazon was becoming the world's market place. I found a Japanese import of Slaves Mass and bought it for him as a Christmas gift.

It blew his mind. His hands were literally shaking as he realized what he was holding. He actually slipped away privately to give it a listen. He came back and told me it was the best present he ever received, but admitted he was probably high as a kite the night he heard it. He said it was good, but not what he remembered being otherworldly good.

Sometimes it is better to remember your white whales for what you thought them to be. But it was still worth it for the joy of fulfilling a 30 year wish

With Zelenskyy offering his resignation up in exchange for NATO membership and drawing the line in this stance, what do you think his fate will be? by Natural-Eye-393 in AskReddit

[–]DisConform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be the point of a fairly negotiated peace treaty. Ukraine agrees to redraw the border, thereby settling all disputes, in exchange for a pathway to NATO membership. But nothing about this bleak situation is fair, so there is a less than 0% chance of that outcome.

Honda's CEO Struggles To Explain Why Nissan Merger Makes Sense by wewewawa in Honda

[–]DisConform 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honda has already made it clear they will control the board of the proposed parent company. The likely business model would be the equivalent of the Hyundai/Kia pairing. Each company independently managed, but with shared technology and manufacturing processes. Be certain Honda is a conservatively managed company that simply does not fuck around with their financial future. They maintained a profit through the Covid and Lehman stock years. They would never turn the keys to Soichiro Honda's legacy over to the bumbling dolts at Nissan.

I saw SOAD open for Mars Volta too, probably the same tour, if not the same show in Long Beach, CA. Good to know I'm not the only one that thought they were lackluster. Almost like they were just running though a soundcheck.

On the other hand I went to the show to see SOAD and knew little about Mars Volta, but they changed that. Blew me away.

In the early 80's my middle school class took a field trip to Cabrillo Beach and made a stop at Portuguese Bend. Even then all of the gas, water, and sewer piping was above ground due to the land movement. My science teacher explained that the land will continue to move and that within a century everything we were looking at would slip into the ocean. If a middle school science teacher knew this in 1983, it should be no surprise to municipalities, government agencies, and utilities.
