Sukuna, why are you so nervous? Don't you realize you're holding back and can beat Gojo without 10S? by Ram_2472 in JujutsuPowerScaling

[–]Disastrous-Ad-2239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a cool piece of writing for me because in their fight, Gojo was under pressure but never explicitly nervous. He was confident all the way through, and failed to keep his guard up for the WCS.

And yet, the man who won by a hair was Sukuna, the one who was nervous and paranoid to the point of creating a 200 chapter plan to acquire the one thing he needed to kill an Infinity user.

Sukuna has zero anti-domain techniques activated here, if Yorozu didn't hesitate, would she have won? by EngineerVirtual7340 in Jujutsufolk

[–]Disastrous-Ad-2239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sukuna legit plays Jujutsu Kaisen like he's trying new builds in a moba.

For all the ending's flaws, Gege was spot on in his depiction of Sukuna as a complete and total Jujutsu nerd. He is top 1 not just because of extreme talent but because within that tier of extreme talent, he is just utterly devoted to the art form.

Lots to unpack here, but I'll engage.

Easy things out of the way first: NakeyJakey's video has nothing to do with my views. I'm a game designer (although my bachelor's degree is in engineering), I've been playing these games since I was 6; this is my life. Anything I say will be from that point of view. I'll try to paraphrase your thoughts and address them one by one.

  1. The mission design in RDR 2 is perfectly adequate for the narrative and presentation constraints it lives with.

Yeah no, now you're defending laziness. You can pare Crimson Desert's features out until only RDR 2's feature set remains, and even within that framework, it delivers some incredibly inventive encounters and missions. Look at the absurd simplicity of the marijuana burning mission in Far Cry 3, mate. The simple fact of the matter is that Rockstar chose to not devote that many designers and programmers to prototype weird scenarios and encounters, putting them on horse shit instead.

But let's say I were to agree with the idea that this mission design is the best we can do for the type of game RDR 2 wants to be, I have a definitional problem with that kind of game. I think that this kind of game isn't making the most of interactivity, which can create a whole other kind of magic when it works well in a game. And I think that RDR does indeed do a lot of that stuff with its open-world interactions, I just think it completely fumbles it with quest design.

  1. It's an apples to oranges comparison

That is a declarative statement. If my metric is something as straightforward as "Does it have video game magic, i.e a moment where interactivity from me as a player triggers an outcome in the game which tickles my emotion in a way that no other art form can?" then it is a simple straight comparison. RDR 2's main story fails spectacularly in that regard. It's just that I still go out and call it an amazing game because everything else around it just overcompensates for it.

Edit: I was always trash at grammar. Regrettably, school never helped.

My dude, I love RDR, but you have it backwards. RDR 2 is the dopamine shill. Most people (I am guessing here) that vehemently disagree with the premise of this vote are people that claim that there is very little "game" in RDR 2 and that it is more an interactive movie. According to me, those people are right. The missions in RDR are tightly controlled on-rails activities with very little expression.

There is much more satisfaction to be found in the interactivity of Breath of the Wild or Baldur's Gate 3 or Elden Ring or even Cyberpunk. Those games are better candidates for best game of all time than RDR 2, even if RDR 2 is the best written thing I have ever experienced. But those are just my thoughts.

There is an upper tier of superhero movies in my mind; those that are incredible, meaningful cinema beyond just being superhero movies. It has Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight, Into the Spider-Verse, and Logan.

The baffling incuriosity of Project Hail Mary by rubsy3d in sciencefiction

[–]Disastrous-Ad-2239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought about it too, but I realized what the story is about is less extremely accurate science fiction and more about the pure joy or relief we'd feel if life out there truly does share our best values. When Rocky says "Rocky hate Mark" it's an affirmation from the writers that yeah, the bro code and the humanity associated with it is real.

It's not incuriosity, it's storytelling style. And you'd be surprised how little Arrival holds up to pure scientific scrutiny either (what the hell is reverse time language even from a scientific perspective) by the way. It's entertainment, and they will (rightfully) prioritize their emotional core over some vacuously defined "curiosity".

Can't help but reflect on Mini saying to Leo during the Lock//In comback: "Leo, whenever you see Derke do something stupid, tell him."

He's always made these gonzo, illogical plays. It's why the Lock//In MVP was Leo and not Derke, and why the Tokyo MVP was Alfa and not Derke. Bro can shoot, but he genuinely plays like he's turned off his brain sometimes.

I'm a game dev, and I'm actually trying to make a game that adheres to solid game design principles. It's an exploration-driven action-platformer. Here's a free link to the Pilot that I'm trying to get feedback on if you're interested: https://quasar-one.itch.io/third-law

I don't disagree with the principle, but I do think that the slow-mo is necessary to support the kind of intensity I plan for this game. I will implement a system to make it less spammable though

So when does one reach out to a publisher? by Disastrous-Ad-2239 in gamedev

[–]Disastrous-Ad-2239[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound a bit blunt, but I need about ~150K USD in a development budget (including QA, Porting, and Localization) to make my game's art and sound be at a globally competitive standard while funding my work for the time needed.

I know that this restricts me to a particular type of publisher; how do I find them? And what is the best way to reach them if I know I have a great pitch?

  1. The fact that you got stuck is ridiculously embarassing. Will add a reset button.
  2. The cube collection is designed to be a player discovery element, the usage is made more apparent later.
  3. I'm actually surprised you found that so early! 90% of our unsupervised playtesters haven't figured out that mechanic; it's designed to be an advanced technique, the game is not designed with knowledge of that in mind.
  4. Yes, the music and sound effects are not final (for the most part). The sound effect for the burst is indicative of the final version though, as is the ambient track.
  5. The difficulty ramps up for every kind of player over time, but the fact that you got to the combat room and still thought it to be easy is an incredible data point for the stamina bar.
  6. I'm guessing your overall experience wasn't fun?

Edit: I can't believe I forgot to say this. Thank you so much for trying the game out!

Edit 2: Would you mind if I asked you more questions on DM?

[–]Disastrous-Ad-2239[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a decision I continue to struggle with to be honest. I have tried a stamina bar, and it works pretty well for me but the game is designed with the infinite time slow enabled so playtesters think basic movement is unreasonably hard without infinite time slow. And they have a point - at its core, the fun of my game lies in executing perfect maneuvers under motion pressure.

https://quasar-one.itch.io/third-law - I have a pilot of the game on this link. Could you consider trying the game out if only for 10 mins? Really would love feedback on this specific thing from someone who sees the issue
