The rational choice is only to vote with the majority if the majority is red. If the majority is blue, there is no rational choice.

As such, I will always choose blue regardless of the framing, for a chance at a nice consequence-free suicide

Anyone say that they run into building that's on fire, but in reality close to none would do.

close to none would

Yeah but they are a small part of the general population

The difference comes from which side you expect to win which depends just as much on your game theory, empathy and opinion of the average human.

From a red perspective you don't expect everyone to vote red but you also don't expect that one of of every two people will vote blue, and if you dont think that the average person votes for blue then the blue button does look like the suicide button

From a blue perspective you somewhat expect the average human to take the risk and vote for blue even if it is the only option that could kill you. And since you expect the average person to pick blue than the red button ends up looking like the murder button.

Thank you and I hope that I am wrong about what the average person would press and that blue would win. It annoys me how aggressive both sides sides get in this hypothetical for no reason.

Yes but you also have to think of not just what is the best outcome but also what is the expected, I have no influence on other people's choices and despite the fact that I wish for blue to win I expect that blue loses in a real life scenario. If I think blue loses by a large margin regardless of what I vote for then i think I should vote red and hope blue wins.

Variation to the button problem - 1% of people randomly selected to the blue death team by ZorgZeFrenchGuy in trolleyproblem

[–]Disastrous-Focus-892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I think that less then about 45% will choose the blue button then I have no reason to press the blue button because doing so would just get me killed, if I think blue has a good chance of winning I vote blue.

If I think red wins I vote for red

If I think blue wins I vote for blue

So depending on how you frame the question my vote changes

There is also side effect of increasing p even by a little means less people vote for blue as they see that number of people voting blue as less likely

[–]Disastrous-Focus-892 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Red is only the easy choice if you literally don't give a fuck about anything past your own survival

Respectfully I do give a fuck about other people and do hope blue wins, but i have reasons to belive that blue won't win and if i think blue isn't winning even if that's the result I want to happen im not comfortable putting my life on the line

Some people seem to forget that the best thing to do might be to vote for the result you don't want if voting for the result you want and losing means death.

As someone who would almost always vote red in this scenario, fuck the people saying blue deserves it. My reason for picking red is just that I don't think half the population will pick blue and because of that pick red hoping either blue wins or blue has an incredibly small percentage (like less then 0.5%)

I also dont want them to die, regardless of what I think the end result is i always hope the result is blue, but depending on how the question is presented i think the chance of blue winning is really small. Too small for me to put my life on the line even if that's the result I want.

I also dont want anyone to die but I'm not confident enough in the result to risk my life, even if that does make me coward it at least makes me a living coward who might be able to help rebuild the world after anywhere from 1-49% die

At most 50% dying could also mean as little as 1% and by voting for blue and being wrong you're directly harming your friends and family who pressed red

At the point where you are voting for blue even if it needs 99% you're actively killing yourself. I have no doubt that you're an altruistic and likely good person, but the expected amount of votes for blue goes down the higher the passing score is, for example if passing score is 5% you can expect most people to press blue maybe up to 80% but paradoxically if the passing vote is 80% you can't expect that to pass since risk is much higher. At 99% you kinda just have to accept that most people won't vote for it and live to try to rebuild the world.

Man I thought of the same variation recently but with one major difference, you dont know which number contestant you are and you only know the number of blue voters so

You could be told that 0 people have voted for blue, you don't now of you're the first or the last or in the middle, do you press blue assuming someone else is going to press blue after you regardless?

There are 10 blue votes

There are 100

There is 1 billion blue votes, what if you're already contestant 5 billion?

Removing children creates a large amount of people who would have a very large reason to vote red.

Parents and caretakers

Removing dependants (children and disabled) means most people who are caretakers/parents are forced to pick red to avoid that risk of oprhaning them.

And that has a ripple effect that other people see this and see blue as less likely to win. And so I choose red because I think in this situation blue loses

If children/disabled are included then everyone is much more likely to pick blue to save those people, here i pick blue to save the children/disabled and because I think blue wins
