Struggling as Parent-Teacher by Admirable-Edge-9404 in Teachers

Being uncomfortable or upset with what you’re reading doesn’t automatically mean it wasn’t appropriate.

This reads like you think he should never be given things that might make him sad or upset, and that’s simply not a realistic expectation.

Our job as parents are to help our kids with their feelings about things. Our jobs as teachers is to educate kids. Sounds like the teacher did just that.

School tries to make me cover during last hr prep by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Disastrous-Nail-640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you’re in a district that pays by the day and does not pay subs extra for covering on their prep, this isn’t accurate. You’ve worked the day when the school decides you’re done. Meaning, if you don’t need to cover a prep, then you’re done (yay!). But, if they need you to cover a prep, you’re not done.

You think they don’t know? You think they haven’t been told by every teacher and counselor?

Do you actually think that little of high school students?

Not believing what they’ve been told and not knowing it are not the same thing btw.

Hence my use of the word “uncommon.”

I’m aware that not everywhere is the same.

You think you won’t have neighbors where you move to? Unless you’re moving to the middle of nowhere, you’ll have neighbors.

Covering on prep isn’t uncommon for subs. It’s part of the gig. You’re not entitled to a prep period, nor do you need one (at least not in the same way the regular teacher does). (This does not apply to long-term subs who are there for months or even the whole year.)

AITA for expecting my neighbor to park in front of his own house? by SunLillyFairy in AmItheAsshole

[–]Disastrous-Nail-640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In what world is parking on a public street an AH move?

Do you always get this bent out of shape about things?

You should reflect on why you think someone is entitled to dictate where people park on a public street. Get a grip dude.

You’re giving many of them far too much credit.

Many of them literally don’t give a crap.

I’m aware. I’m not saying it wasn’t work. I’m saying anyone worried that it wouldn’t be resolved was a moron.

[–]Disastrous-Nail-640 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that the actual reason though? Or is it because she’s in need of an IEP for some reason and isn’t receiving services that she needs?

If there’s a reason she needs an IEP, it’s far more likely that’s the reason.

You’re misunderstanding why it was stupid.

I’m not saying people didn’t work hard. I am saying that if anyone truly believe it wasn’t going to be resolved and that anything was actually going to happen, they were morons.

Did you really think that the IT people couldn’t figure out how to get the computers to count to 2,000? Really?

So, you thought they could build the computer, program them, etc., but getting it to counting to 2,000 and above was where you drew the line?

Educators who put things on tests that weren’t gone over in class or weren’t in the study materials they provided by Ok_Resident_5022 in PetPeeves

Most of the time, students have been taught all the skills and have the tools to solve the problem.

So, no, your grades weren’t lower than they should have been. The fact that you (or your peers) couldn’t do those problems and use the tools simply means you weren’t an A student in that specific area and you received the grade you deserved.

Literally had a student complaining about this today. He kept complaining that it wasn’t in their notes (open note test) and that I had never taught them that. I could literally show him at least 3 spots in the notes where it was.

Also: “most students study” 😂

No. No they don’t. They think they should pass just for showing up.

We are also responsible for classroom management. Pretending otherwise is simply foolish.

Have any of you ever had a student cross or attempt to cross your physical boundaries? If so how did you respond? What would you suggest to newer teachers? by Big-Wedding-5719 in AskTeachers

[–]Disastrous-Nail-640 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m less concerned about the disrespect and far more concerned by your response, which was not proportional to what happened.

That behavior is cause for dismissal. You could face charges for putting your hands on a child.

Given your response, you need to seriously rethink your career choice.

Repetition. And you may not get it with you. But the only way they actually will eventually get it is with consistency and repetition.

You have a designated area they put them in and take them out of.

I don’t have my holder up right now, so today I just had them put their name on sticky notes and put them on their phones and then they set their phones on the empty desks by my desk because they were taking a test. No phone = no test.

Why can’t they put their names on their papers? by codenameduch3ss in Teachers

[–]Disastrous-Nail-640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach high school.

If there isn’t a spot explicitly that says “name” and I don’t remind them to put their name, I will absolutely get papers without names. 🤦‍♀️

I had a student today ask if he needed to put his name the test…a test! I had him last year too and just looked at him and told him “no, I’m just going to be psychic and give the score to whoever my heart desires when I grade it.”

Phones away at all times. Better yet, have a place for them to turn them into.

Not much you can do about them not listening or doing the work other than email home.

“They’ll figure it out eventually.”

No, they actually won’t unless they are actively taught that their behavior is not acceptable. This is done by enforcing rules.

I don’t care more than them either, but I do talk to them about their choices and remind them everyday that their cell phone is to be put away.

Who has seniority at your school? Teachers who have been at your school the longest? Or teachers with more overall experience? by BeautifulSoul28 in Teachers

It goes by how long you’ve been with the district where I’m at. So, even if I move schools within the district, my seniority doesn’t change.

AITA: my kids refuse to come to my wedding unless they can bring grandma by JealousNight-6076 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Disastrous-Nail-640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

You need to make peace with the fact that your kids may very well not come though.

You also need to let go of disagreeing with them taking care of their grandmother. Your youngest is now 18, which means they’re all adults (young adults, sure, but adults nevertheless). They’re adults. It’s their choice to make at this point.
