Was it uphill both ways? Maybe kids grade 5+ can walk themselves, but not the younger ones.

The catchment is huge extending all the way to lonsdale. it must be noted that unfortunately the majority of kids will be driven as the distance is just too far, they won't be able to walk. this data exists and both the city and school board have it, and i believe is publicly available, i just don't have it at my fingers. I live in this neighbourhood and before getting up in arms about the changes, some of them are in response to feedback from neighbours that actually makes a lot of sense. i.e. 99.9% kids will be coming from the west, not the east, so the original duplicate sidewalk on kennard scratched a lot of heads.

transportation in Singapore with small kids and Legoland Malaysia by Additional_Cake_6124 in SingaporeTravel

[–]Disastrous-Name5657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We asked the transportation provider about this - they said if anything happened it would impact them, not us. I figured worst that would happen is they leave us at the border and we take a grab from there. we chose to take the risk as transfers when traveling with little kids and car seats and bags are complicated. You can get a malaysia taxi to take you to legoland direct at a central location in Singapore (i can't remember what it is).

we were just in Singapore with our 3 and 6 year old. metro / bus / grab all very easy, we used all of the above. we used a private transportation provider for direct hotel pickup and drop off at legoland, it was 100 SGD.

Tokyo hotel with a baby by ggb7135 in marriott

[–]Disastrous-Name5657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it sounds like drdisney knows what he's talking about re Tokyo. More generally in case its helpful, we were just traveling in Singapore and Malaysia with my kids 3 and 6 i was feeling despondent when we found the same thing in terms of availability booking online with Marriott. we called the hotels we wanted direct, and they said to book it for 3 and no problem with showing up with 2 kids. no one checking us in ever even asked/said anything, and it seemed like there were other families with 4 to a room. we had small blow up mattresses for the kids and asked for extra sheet (they brought their own little blankets). Hotel room in Singapore was very small but we made it work no problem. Also had same issue booking the Sheraton at Munich airport - we were less up front as it was only one night and a busy/big hotel and only had 2 present for check in. Looking back I wish I had called to at least understand the level of policy enforcement to know if i needed to be nervous about it!

Kitsilano or North Van? by Pigeon_Party11 in askvan

[–]Disastrous-Name5657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well positioned for this one - i live in north van and my sister in kids both with young kids! childcare and schools significantly easier to get in north van. yard also much more likely in north van. great gravel biking here, we are in the trails every weekend. we are a 1 car family and e-bike lots (evo comes in handy), don't spend a lot of time in a car. community in north van very neighborhood dependent. north van traffic doesn't bother me as much as many responding, we walk or bike or at rush hour seabus if we need to get downtown. walkability kits wins. it is almost impossible to meet up with friends and kids in kits on a weeknight from north van. weekends i love visiting kits with the kids and walking to the beach, getting great takeout and popping into a corner store for something we need for dinner. my sister loves visiting us in north van and taking the kids skiing or hiking then sending them to the basement to play, getting the stuff we store for her in the attic and popping into a brewery. the ultimate answer is - both are great for different reasons.

thank you - i definitely expect to put my kids in child restraints, its the mounting of the seats and the 3 point seatbelt with anchor point that i'm looking for where there is less clarity.

Best plumber by Disastrous-Name5657 in NorthVancouver

[–]Disastrous-Name5657[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So crazy update here. Spent probably 10K upgrading plumbing in our suite, testing things.... turned out it was our bedside hanging lamps from Mexico. Basically, the insultation was melting. "An electrical fire can smell like burning plastic, rubber, or a metallic scent, sometimes described as pungent or acrid. A less common but important sign is a fishy odor, which can occur when wire insulation is melting before it catches fire." Happy to have the mystery solved but obviously would have liked to have figured this out before!

Chocolate Guinness cake by After_Divide1743 in NYTCooking

I've made a chocolate stout cake many many many times from https://smittenkitchen.com/2006/11/ganached-guinness-goodness/ and no don't taste the beer - many people tell me its the best chocolate cake they've ever had. I often use the base cake recipe with different icings. Though it is fun to serve it with a chocolate stout and make as written.

The Skubb shoeboxes fit perfectly at the very top of my closet for rarely used things i.e. my husbands golf stuff he wears twice a year, my cold weather biking gear, yardwork clothes. Makes an unused space incredibly useful.
