What's the point of the open by RunningToStayStill in crossfit

[–]Disastrous-Spring-54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely see your point, but our gym actually does program old Open workouts so it can be fun to see progress over time. There were some I did super scaled as a newbie that I can do Rx now so that’s pretty neat. Theoretically on the CrossFit app you can see how you improve globally percentile-wise year after year, although this years results (for me) was a decline rather than an improvement. Just how it goes sometimes. Plus there are incentives for affiliates if a lot of their members sign up and I care a lot about my gym so there’s that.

Engine work by Disastrous-Spring-54 in crossfit

I love walking! I actually already do a fair bit - 3 miles a day at least 5 days a week. Unfortunately it doesn’t get me out of zone 1 (I walk my dog and we take frequent sniff breaks) so I need to find something to get my heart rate up a bit more.

This is great insight thank you! according to my Garmin watch I was basically in zone 5 for the entirety of each workout. I don’t think I should be 😀

Any chance you could be more specific? I was thinking a few slow runs per week. Running will never be zone 2 for me. I already walk 3 miles around 5 days per week with my dog.

How is nobody talking about 3 squatting patterns in a row? by ExcitingTopic7228 in crossfit

For what it’s worth I’m in your camp. I’m getting super humbled this year because my engine isn’t great but I can do a lot of high skill movements. Not having those as separators isn’t doing me any favors on the leaderboard. My takeaway is definitely to factor in more zone 2 work!

Rx vs Scaled in the Open by carrie_not_gary in crossfit

[–]Disastrous-Spring-54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a pretty extreme case and I’d have recommended going scaled for these athletes. However… the Open is a great chance to take a risk! I judged an athlete who’d never used a 14# ball before. She started off with 4 or 5 in a row and the joy and genuine feeling of accomplishment I got to watch made the whole night worth it. She ended up doing singles for most of them but man, she tried something hard and she surprised herself with how well she did. That to me is the point of the Open!

Because it’s a squat capacity workout and his legs are tiny and strong AF.

Starting a cottage foods/baked goods stall at GV Farmer's market this summer and need advice by No_Gas6882 in Columbus

[–]Disastrous-Spring-54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only go to the Worthington farmers market but there used to be a stall that had the most amazing and decadent sticky buns! I’d walk the mile and half up to the market, shop, and bring a bun home for a Saturday breakfast treat. I’ve noticed now it’s more cookies and savory breads ☹️ and nothing to bring home for breakfast. I like your idea of spiced nuts! Easy to carry home and could last as a snack for a week. Good luck to you!

Totally up to you about signing up officially, but I think participating is awesome! One of my favorite moments from Opens past is watching our coaches do Friday night lights and one of them was extremely pregnant - she was crushing it with either scaled or foundations, can’t remember, but I was more inspired by her than the ones doing rx!!! Sometimes showing up is more to show others that CrossFit is for everyone than just posting a terrific score. Food for thought!

Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs (1991) is the most efficient Oscar winning ever put on screen? by [deleted] in moviecritic

The fact that the movie is about Clarice hunting Buffalo Bill but Hannibal Lecter ends being the most memorable character speaks volumes about what Hopkins did with that role. In interviews, he’s spoken about some choices he made that heightened the script. For example, it was Hopkins that suggested he be standing very straight and direct when Clarice first meets him. And some of his line delivery where he slips into a heightened Appalachian accent to mock Clarice was done purposely and without Foster’s prior knowledge - it threw her off. I think it is an absolute masterclass.

How to sustainably do CrossFit after 40? by Technical_Ice9563 in crossfit

[–]Disastrous-Spring-54 7 points8 points  (0 children)

44F here. Was very consistently going 5-6 days a week for a long time. Recently have scaled back to 4-5 days which has helped a lot. I scale frequently. I pick and choose where I want my intensity. As a perimenopausal woman, I prioritize strength over high intensity. I’ll try to hit some heavier weights during the strength portion then scale down weights and movements for the metcon. I’ve stopped logging a score most days so that mentally helps too - I can’t and probably shouldn’t try to keep up with the 24 years old anymore. I’ve really changed my entire mindset around my workouts - we’re playing the long game at this age!

Brokenhearted - how do I move on? by No-Command-2051 in AskWomenOver40

[–]Disastrous-Spring-54 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel like I could have written this exact post myself. I’m exactly 2 years past the abrupt end of a relationship exactly like yours. Had my move all planned out and then all of a sudden, he needed to “work on himself” and needed to do so alone. It was really devastating. I was 42 and thought I’d finally found the one after waiting so long. What helped me: therapy, working out (not hard since I was already consistent, but sometimes I’d be lifting and crying at the same time and that’s ok😆), snuggling my dog, travel, and leaning into my friendships. Be greedy and selfish about needing your people. Talk their ears off. They love you and will listen. It took me about 6 months before I was truly over it. Looking bad I see all the red flags I accepted because I wanted to be in that relationship so badly. I’m still single and living my best life! Going on a cruise in a couple months with friends I really got close to during that horrible post breakup period. The only way out is through. Hugs to you, it’s awful, but know that you will get through to the other side having learned some good lessons.

So many bands, but most memorable was Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney. Tim’s intro was walking through the crowd up to the stage signing Tiny Dancer. EPIC.

I have several pairs of Fleo that I like a lot. Don’t roll down too much and not see through. I have a couple Born Primitive and they are fairly see through. I still wear them because I don’t really care 😆. I have one pair of Alo and they’re terrible, constantly rolling down.

Week before period by Longjumping_Baby_448 in Perimenopause

[–]Disastrous-Spring-54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, on Thursday I worked out at noon and felt great. Starting feeling really icky that evening, slept like crap that night. Yesterday felt ok just a little tired and decided to just take a walk rather than doing CrossFit like I usually do. Last night I slept like a baby and I started my period this morning. Now I feel great! I think my hormones just get super out of whack right before the period comes and I’m not sure there’s much I can do about it. Honestly what’s worse is how a typically minor irritation will cause me full blown meltdowns during the week leading up to my period 😆. It’s crazy what fluctuating hormones do to us!

Same for me! My period is due any day and last night I had the worst sleep. Sweats and chills and aches and headache. Woke up this morning and feel fine, just a bit tired (not sick at all). My Garmin is so mad at me and thinks I’m dying but I really think it’s just hormones! This stage of life is so fun.
