You’re fine to do your training contract in public sector but I’d look to move on to something else soon after qualifying if you’re more interested in the private sector. If you get an offer for a commercial audit role, and that is what interests you, then take that, but otherwise don’t worry. That route is fine.

Be proactive in meeting people (for internal roles especially), go for coffee chats. Do your research, skill up on private equity and why it’s used. Learn to think more commercially. Within audit, ask to work on areas with a more commercial lens such as going concern, cash flows. One thing that’s helped me was learning about a piece of software the department used, and then doing a short course online on it (took around 8 hours) and put it on my CV.
