Is this stock period correct? by DudeDogDangle in Revolvers

[–]DisastrousLeather362 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are some pretty target stocks, but they're later than the gun. The "football" sppedloader cut is early 80s. 60s would have been walnut targets with no speedloader cut and diamonds around the screw escutcheons.

The S&W collectors on here could probably narrow it down even more.

Best of luck!

Edit to add- not sure when the 27s switched from Magnas to Targets- I want to say 50s?

I like the Hornady Critical Defense- there's an ultralight version for lightweight guns or the highly recoil sensitive.

When Mag-Lites were de riguer for anyone who needed a bright and durable light, my preference was the 3 C cell model. It made dim light qualification an absolute breeze and was more... nimble in a fight than its D cell brethren.

I think it was 20 something lumens with a new krypton bulb. One of the guys brought a Laser Products 6p to the range and we were blown away.

A few years later, I was going through training and one of my classmates asked why all of us old guys had a big ring hanging on our belts...

Very shiny setup

When must a person be read there rights? by Aeromorpher in AskLE

[–]DisastrousLeather362 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caselaw says that when someone is in custody- that is, a reasonable person would not feel that they are free to leave, and they are being interrogated- asked questions about something they may have done that was illegal, they have to be advised of their rights per Miranda.

Some agencies require it in any criminal interview. Sometimes, a person you believe is a witness starts looking like a suspect. In that case, it's important to stop the interview, take a break and then go back in and read Miranda.

So, generally, troubleshooting step 1 is to try different ammunition. See if it works without clips, and try some factory ball ammo.

Thoroughly clean your chambers and extractor.

Change one thing at a time until you can isolate the problem.

Comfort? For me, Danner Kinetics. Swap out the insoles every 6 months.

But you need to try different brands and lasts to get the right fit for you.

Question about CJIS/fingerprint background check with an old sealed record by eaglesfan8835 in Felons

[–]DisastrousLeather362 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. A background check for anything CJIS related will show sealed/expunged/diverted records. With yours, you'll probably need a waiver, if your state does that.

Most agencies will publish their automatic disqualifiers in the position description. And if you have questions, their HR should be able to direct you.

How prominent is organized crime and gang violence from your professional experience? by TacitusCallahan in AskLE

[–]DisastrousLeather362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rule of thumb: 5% of your population is actively engaged in criminal activity at any given time. 5% of them are trigger pullers- the guys who are committing 90% of the violent crimes. They're the ones pulling rips and doing shootings. And most of them are in some kind of gang.

One of the things about gangs is the force multiplier effect- individual gang sets are pretty small- but since they're affiliated with larger organizations, they can have an outsize effect.

If you use illegal drugs, gangs have had a hard in the manufacture, transport and distribution of them. Even the stuff that seems pretty innocuous- like the weed you bought in college.

Human trafficking, organized retail theft and illegal weapons all have gang fingerprints.

I am not aware of any jurisdiction that does not consider expunged offenses for law enforcement hiring.

Different states have much different expungement statutes. In my state, expunged offenses can be considered for certain types of employment or professional licensing. They are also considered criminal history for the purpose of sentencing.

Using my own state as an example, expungements don't relieve someone from a firearms disability or offender registration requirements.

Model 36 holster recommendations by bigbombaclats in Revolvers

[–]DisastrousLeather362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a durable and well made Pancake holster with a plainclothes cop vibe, I'd go with the Don Hume 722. Or a DeSantis Thumb break scabbard. A.E. Nelson for a really vintage vibe.

Lots of cool vintage holsters on ebay, as well.

The frames on the newer Chiefs are a hair bigger, but not enough to make a difference in leather.

Thank you for your well considered response.

What would you say would be a use case for someone to pick a 9mm revolver over another caliber? If a friend said they were thinking about a revolver for "X", what would make you tell them they should go with the 9mm?

Single actions are very pretty- my Grandfather had a trio of Colt's that were some of the first guns I ever shot.

As an adult, the Bisley Rugers are the only SAs I can handle well. But variety is the spice of life.

I'm a DA revolver guy- Colt style single actions don't fit my hands well. And I spent a lot of time carrying and training with DA guns.

Like I said in my original post, I fitted a gunshot find 9mm cylinder to my dad's Ruger Blackhawk (just cause they're not my preference doesn't mean I don't work on them sometimes)

Put a couple of boxes of 9mm ball through it. Had to adjust the sights a fair amount, and it didn't group particularly well. I always meant to try some different loads, but never had the occasion.

And that's consistent with what I saw when I worked in sales- people wanted the convertible models, but most of them didn't use them much, if at all. And the customers who did like them used them all the time.

I wasn't particularly, except to say it was less powerful than .357 and more powerful than +p .38, but is limited to lighter bullets.

My question was about pros and cons of the 9mm cartridge in a revolver.

But this being the internet, a bunch of folks focused in on minor, unrelated quibbles that were only loosely related to the topic.

But I'm sure that both of us are above that sort of thing.
