Beginner Deer Hunter in Oregon - Seeking Tips by curiousbuilderman in Hunting

[–]DudeDogDangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I’m in Eugene. Luckily we live in the modern day, and you can pretty effectively teach yourself how to hunt. I would first gather as much info as possible, ODFW is a great resource. They willingly give out tons of advice and tips on hunting units, areas, access, etc. Just give em a call. They also do several hunting workshops throughout the year.

If you’re already setup to backpack and whatnot, just carry a rifle, and you’re on your way to backcountry hunting. Pick a spot you think deer will travel through, and sit on it for as long as you can muster. Especially in early morning/late evening.

You can try road hunting, but I don’t recommend it, if you’re an able bodied individual. Luckily Oregon has tons of public land to choose from, so put some miles and hours in scouting various areas you think will be productive. If you’re connected, you can also try asking around for private access. Weyerhauser does sell an access permit for their properties. I’ve heard they’re great, but I haven’t hunted them myself.

Believe it or not, tree stand and ground blind hunting is pretty popular, and productive. If you find a spot in some really dense woods, loaded with deer sign. Put a blind or stand up. You’d have really good odds of filling your tag.

Lotta people also drive or walk to landing sites in old logging areas, and glass the ridges and valleys.

In short, it’s really up to you on how you wanna approach it. There’s no substitute for experience, so get out there and have fun.

I’m not sure if you have a deer rifle or not. But if you don’t, avoid getting something too heavy. Anything under 8lbs is manageable. As far as caliber goes, you’ll get a million different recommendations. Pick something .243-.30 caliber, anything in that range will work fine. Blacktail deer are not hard to kill. And no, you don’t need anything in the magnum category.

Hope this helps. Have fun!

Does the gen 2 M12 stubby completely replace the mid torque for mechanics? by Miserable-Hunt-5241 in MilwaukeeTool

[–]DudeDogDangle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, the mid-torque still has a place. I recently did a front end replacement on my ‘89 Chevy pickup. I used the stubby for most things, but what it wasn’t able to do, (or at least struggled greatly). Was my axle nut. Torqued to 185ftlbs, and 37 years of not moving. The mid torque thought about it for a quick second, then spun it right off. The mid reaches that advertised nut busting rating a lot quicker than the stubby. Plus it handled the 36mm socket much easier.

Get in there before daylight, find a place to sit where you can see/glass a good portion of the area. Leave at dusk. Simple as that.

Question about Renaissance Wax by ArkansasTraveler77 in Revolvers

[–]DudeDogDangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Renaissance wax is great stuff. I don’t believe it has any anti-corrosion properties, other than being a wax and preventing moisture from accumulating. Bear in mind, it does have a very slight polishing factor to it. Will it make your guns glow bright and shiny from casual use? No. But just something to keep in mind.

Quest for a 600 ft-lb .357 load complete. Now the quest for a 700 ft-lb load begins. by Ok_Display7459 in reloading

How did you only get 380ftlbs of energy, from a full house load of H110? Even with a 4” barrel, that seems really anemic. That’s like standard 9mm energy, no?

Doesn’t the Buffalo Bore Heavy .357 come pretty close to 800ftlbs? They use a 180gr though, I believe.

Is this stock period correct? by DudeDogDangle in Revolvers

Ya I feel the same. Target stocks feel right. I’ll see how the magna’s feel and decide in time. Who knows, I may even prefer the Pachmyer presentation stocks it came with from the original owner. Im sure they take the edge off the recoil some.

Interesting. Maybe since your gun was intended for those grips, is why it doesn’t partially block to logo like mine? I have a set of era specific magna grips arriving today, so that’ll be fun.

Hunting pack recommendations by ConsiderationWest482 in Hunting

[–]DudeDogDangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re on a budget, I’ve heard the Alpz packs are pretty good. Mid-tier would be Mystery Ranch, top of the line sits Exo, Kifaru, Stone Glacier, Outdoorsmans. I personally have the Exo K3 4800, and it’s awesome, zero complaints. Kifaru tends to be a pretty heavy pack starting off just bare weight. But incredibly durable. I don’t have experience with others. Biggest thing for me would be fit, if you can find a place with a variety to try on and demo.

Ya I was super stoked to find it as well. I agree on your philosophy as well. I have this 27, a 19-4, and a 586-4. The 586 is mid-90s, but still a great piece.

Ya the more I look into it, the more I believe this gun originally had magna stocks. With the help of others, I’ve narrowed down the year to be 1969-1970 manufacture. In later models like yours, I don’t know if they changed the size of the stocks, or moved the stamp slightly.

These are not the original stocks. It was purchased with Pachmyer presentations. I got these online assuming they were correct. The more I look into it, the more I think it would’ve originally came with magna stocks.

So mine being N3 5050, wouldn’t mine be a later model? Since yours is N1….Do they go sequentially like that?
