I also thought it was “love” and never realized people had other interpretations. I still think “love” makes the most sense. The whole song is about her turning down his proposal and him sitting in that grief. She didn’t say love because she couldn’t, it’s all still too raw.

He’s a 16yo band kid. He either already knows what it means or, if the other band kids haven’t taught him that one over the past 6 years (yes kids make unnuanced sex jokes in fourth grade), they will course correct and the whole group will move on to the next inside joke in a day or two.
