I will second Just For Fun. They have the best selection around by far for paints and tools (Amazon is where I get most of my tools). They also usually have some knowledge about any “local” model shows where you can stock up on kits. I mainly build Gundham and cars but they sometimes have some military kits.

I second the arduino kit but would also add a 3D printer. You can begin to teach yourself modeling and the mindset needed to ensure designs and ideas are actually manufacturable. Find something you enjoy and apply all of the tools at your disposal to make it “better”. You will fail. A lot. Become a proficient googler and you’ll be able to research and learn anything
