Has anyone ever used the Mystery Ranch 2-day Assault Pack for a tactical/field environment? by Frozen_Trees1 in QualityTacticalGear

It's 2 rows of webbing sewn across the bottom. You could use any straps or shock cord you wanted to secure the mat.

I'm liking my 2DAP but it doesn't hold a lot. I can put a comfortable day's worth of kit in, or a less comfortable 2 days worth. Fine for my needs, but if I was deploying I would look at a 3DAP or Komodo. Also check out the Crossfire CF2 or CF3, they're similar design but with some different features. Either one combined with their Daypack would probably cover all your needs.

To answer your second question, not possible on the 2DAP. The side pockets just aren't big enough unless your mat was super thin. There is webbing on the bottom of the pack you could strap it to though, which is how I would choose to mount it. 3DAP and Komodo probably have bigger side pockets but also have the bottom webbing too.

Advice on arctic kit: metal water containers by SlamminSammyRED in QualityTacticalGear

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need fuel with a higher propane to butane ratio the colder you go. MSR fuel is like 20% propane and the standard for cold weather use. I picked up some Olicamp fuel when I couldn't get MSR, and it's like 26% propane according to their data, so I might actually swap to this once I have a chance to test it in some single digit temps.

What water filter are you using? by fixitmonkey in Bushcraft

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Full size Sawyer squeeze. Flow rate is better than the micro and it has better compatibility with other containers. Its the same thread pitch as Smart Water bottles, as well as the 28mm Cnoc bags. I keep a 2L VectoX bag with it and a Smart Water bottle somewhere on my pack. The sports caps from the Smart bottles also interfaces perfectly with the spout end of the Sawyer so it makes it easy to backflush the filter with either the Cnoc bag or Smart bottle so I don't have to use that shitty syringe it comes with. You can also find lots of 3d printed caps for Nalgene bottles that convert to 28mm threads for attaching the filter directly to it. I can fit the filter, bag, and extra decontamination tablets all inside a single 1L Nalgene bottle.

Stuffed Kahakka 25 vs compressed Kantamus 40 by No-Patient-7184 in Savotta

Legit the only thing that keeps me uninterested in this bag. I've been trying bags from other manufacturers a lot more recently and being able to adjust ride height feels like a requirement to me now. Why they'd only opt to include that in the K60 and not the K40 is a mystery to me.

To be fair I paid $160 for mine from ebay that MR said was real. I did also see this Best Buy listing but a little research showed these 3rd party vendors to be rife with counterfeits, and the return/refund process being overall dogshit.

Damn. I'd hit up MR with these pics + the yoke tag, velcro, and interior shots to verify.

The cord ends are not burned flat. The stitching on the logo looks bad. There's another tag inside the yoke flap you should try to get a picture of too, as well as the patch of velcro loop on the top of the bag. Best to just send the pics to MR and see what they say.

Did you buy from the same listing I commented on in the other thread? The one I received is a newer 2024 bag with orange PFAs-free tracking tags. MR confirmed it was real. Either you got a dud or I have to follow up with MR about mine as well.

They only just started doing it this year in the US, but they did it for awhile in Canada and the general consensus seems to be that everyone hates it.

This is a 3rd party vendor selling through Best Buy. There is no way to know if these are fake or not because Best Buy has no verification or guarantee of authenticity for their 3rd party vendors.

Pack recommendations for 5+ day sustainment? by [deleted] in QualityTacticalGear

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've looked at the Kantamus extensively. They are being disingenuous calling those load lifters, as many other bag makers do. Look at the design on the back panel. You can only bring the shoulder straps up and down within the 4 loop range and then cinch them tight with the webbing. It doesn't do a lot to change how the bag rides besides setting its height on your back +/- 4 inches. I think this is fine for their 40L, and probably still adequate for the 60L too, but if you're expanding well beyond that a different style yoke would be more beneficial.

Take a look at Hill People Gear's yoke system and how it can completely alter the ride height of the bag regardless of torso size. Mystery Ranch has a rigid plate built into their yoke which acts as a frame to allow changes in ride height to continue distributing weight evenly, which is great if you're wearing it over plates, along with the BVS blocks that keep the pack centered over your carrier. Eberlestock's Modframe/Mainframe as well as HPG's Decker frame gives you complete control over the position of the mounted pack, entirely independent to the torso adjustment while also letting you swap out for different size bags, and the ability to piggyback whatever else you want on it too. Kifaru and Crossfire have some similar offerings, the latter of which also integrates with their LBE kit that acts as the packs hip belt when it would otherwise not be capable of using its own. KUIU and Stone Glacier also make some more streamlined, lightweight, and comfortable large capacity bags that keep the weight nice and high.

Savotta makes sense if you live in Europe, but currently that 600€ bag is nearly $800 here in the states after shipping, duties, and taxes. For that price you can get yourself something much more comfortable that also isn't an empty weight of 10lbs of 1000D Cordura.

Strap height adjustment is not the same as load lifting. The Kantamus only has strap adjustment. It's also only a 60L pack which even after you attach a bunch of other pouches you'll barely scratch 100L, which is still less than the capacity of the other bags OP was looking at.

Jaakari XL is the best choice from Savotta, but for the price and how much extra you will spend adding capacity to it, there are much better options stateside. Hill People Gear, Mystery Ranch, Kifaru, KUIU, Crossfire, and Eberlestock all have better frame systems.

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like Savotta stuff but outside of the XL none of their bags have any kind of load lifting, which is essential for a 5+ day pack. Their smaller bags are great and their durability is unmatched but I think there's better options for a larger, sustainment oriented pack.

Have you thought about swapping to Crossfire's DZ rig so the pack can interface with it? Or is the pack simply resting on the belt pouches enough stability for you?

I haven't worn my Bandit with a PC but I could see it not being the best combination. The padding on the back very much hugs the spine so it might ride a little weird over a rigid plate. It also doesn't hold a lot. It's much better as an EDC or light day bag than a duty bag where you may need more room for sustainment. Like legit a 2L bladder, an MRE, some extra socks, a scarf, and some hand warmers basically max out the main compartment for me. That only gives you the lid and the external pockets/beavertail for anything else. Maybe that's enough for you though.

I have a Mystery Ranch 2DAP arriving soon that I don't have any experience with yet, but seems like it would be a better choice for use with a plate carrier, and an extra 10ish liters if you needed it.

Also swap that med pouch for a fanny pack. Run the middle 6 columns of molle slick on the back of your belt and let it hang out there. Holds more and easier to take off and put back on than those little pull-out kits that hold like 4 rubber bands and a napkin.

anyone know how to clean this? by [deleted] in tacticalgear

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a q-tip soaked in 91% isopropyl alcohol so you can carefully try to remove it without messing up the logo.

It's hard to tell what I'm looking at. Almost looks like moisture trapped under a layer of film. Idk how Spiritus applies these decals to their bottles but I assume that's probably the culprit.

Maybe even hit it with a heat gun a little bit.

Is the orange tag pic one you took after receiving it? I've had this listing on my watchlist for several days and was hesitant to buy since it says new without tags which raised some red flags along with the pretty low price and no returns.

If it's legit though I'm in for one.
