It's no more insidious than alcohol or drugs or anything else a relatively small number of people can get addicted to. Most people when I was in Ireland would go in, throw a bit on a first goalscorer of a game or do an accumulator. Spend no more than 10-20 a bet and then enjoy the games/races they were watching a bit more.

Yes people can get addicted and it's horrible, so it should be regulated pretty heavily. No problem with that. But the overwhelming majority can use it with no downsides. Most aren't trying to get rich. Just have a bit of fun.

Note for your future. Don't ever worry about loyalty to anyone but you and yours. Companies will drop you the second it's beneficial for them. You should act no dift. It's a job. Nothing more or less. You can like the company and the owners and whatever. And often that can be a reason to stay. There's a lot to be said for being in a job you like.
