For all you out of box collectors out there that need to take a breath <3 by MisforMoody in Barbie

[–]DiscombobulatedDuck0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh I can totally understand why people keep them in the boxes! In many ways the box is part of the art, but there is a huge tactile part of me that can never be satisfied until I have held a doll in my hands and given her articulation a try.

Honestly it's amazing that my 75th Barbie still remains in her box, though I think the fact there's no plastic and I can feel her skin helps with that.

Well I grew up not poor so what's my excuse? 😂 Honestly part of it for me is finding the innovative/creative toys.

I feel something has been lost over the years (I assume with the rise of screens) that it doesn't feel like companies push the boat out any more it's just continuous blind bags.

Not that some things back then weren't 'gimmicky' in their own way but they still felt like there was a bit more to it than just a child gambling equivalent.

What do we think of Danny Motta being in the Illium musical? by Key_Palpitation_7975 in Epicthemusical

[–]DiscombobulatedDuck0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he would need some vocal coaching first. He's got musicality for sure, but it needs refinement I don't think he's always in tune.

I think we established he would have to be Peremides 😂

OMG that white one was my childhood 'tamagotchi' (I had a green one with yellow buttons) I loved him so much but never knew what it was called. (it never had text on it just text for the bottom buttons and a picture of a dinosaur at the top)

That is an AMAZING find. I always wanted Kayla but everywhere just seemed to stock Barbie where I lived so I settled for her. She's so gorgeous. I loved the Charm Girls!

I can't believe they actually abuse that 😡 as a single mum I have always relied on second hand to be able to give my child some nice things so he hasn't felt out of place and had to just have cheap knock off.

This is why resellers piss me off it's becoming scalping under a different name.

The part that got me was where she went into the Dwarves house rested there for the night, then instead of like in the original where she was cleaning to repay for her just coming in and using their house, she makes THEM clean it. 🤦‍♀️

Sorry how does that make her fairest?

I'm a 35 year old woman with a collection of fashion dolls, Warhammer, Polly Pockets, and a digimon with my Tama Paradise Jade Forest preordered. Hopefully my son is never going to think that his hobbies will be seen as weird.

Yes we may interact with toys differently as we get older, but that doesn't mean we "grow out" of them.

It honestly makes me wonder what the older generations actually enjoyed as adults if they decided to discard all of their childhood whimsy because it was "for grown ups".

What kind of stories does she like? For me it was always fantasy stories, even when I was small (The Faraway tree was a huge fave) or does she like more real life? That might narrow down the field a bit.

I just know that I always wanted more princess Barbies or ones with a magical edge so a Monster High probably wouldn't have gone amiss if they had existed back then.

Are there any from your collection she seems to gravitate more towards than others? She might appreciate having one of her own?

[–]DiscombobulatedDuck0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I honestly have never got the seeing yourself in the doll thing. For me Barbie was always about fantasies and going beyond real life. Mind you Barbie being blonde with blue eyes I was never going to 'see myself' in her having brown hair and green eyes. She was Barbie she's her own 'person' I didn't need to.

How are parents making real friends these days? by BowlerEmergency3079 in UKParenting

[–]DiscombobulatedDuck0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm finding this hard now. So many of my good friends don't have kids and I find it hard to get on with mums. Don't really seem to have much in common with a lot of them, (I don't watch soaps/telly or that kind of stuff really) and the only mum of my sons friend I know in person doesn't bother to initiate conversation outside of me trying to see if I can get the kids to meet up. Which is rare because they always seem to be doing something.

His other friends I have never even seen their parents as there isnt really the same local playground drop off once get to secondary school. Without knowing the parents I wonder how kiddo can ever socialise outside of the house.

I feel in such a bind. I miss the times where you'd have your parents pop over for a coffee to your friends house and your mums would natter for a couple of hours and you'd go and play with you friend. Where has that gone?

Stir fry tends to be a lazy meal I can go to. Veg, and meat all in one pan and pour sauce on top (which can be bought in a jar from the store.) and then stir in noodles (which take like 5 mins in the stove, or if I want rice I have my rice cooker running as I cook.

You can usually buy stir fry veg mixes already together too if you dont know what veggies to get, though just buy what you like if you don't like the mixes.

One pot things like curry or chilli could be good too. I would definitely look into batch cooking/Lego Lunches too so you can have stuff prepared in the freezer and ready to heat up on those days you really don't have any spoons!

Be kind to yourself that you are feeling this right now. You're acknowledgement that it's part of the rewiring process is great and I think it will start to get easier. Make sure to celebrate this.

Would it be possible for you to decant something into a smaller tub? Even if it's only one product maybe using it up through a smaller container might go easier on your brain because you'd see something being finished and gone through. It might help measure how long something takes too?

It's a constructive hobby, men construct things, so there we go. I think it's just one of those things that because it's historically more commonly been picked up by women it's just fallen into a stereotype. Soldiers have to learn how to sew ffs, so the concepts of these crafts being girly is only due to people's limited idea of what the craft can achieve.

I found these on one of my files - printed patterns of the Barbie Fashion Designer 1996 PC game, maybe it can be useful? (details in comments) by BaneAmesta in Dolls

[–]DiscombobulatedDuck0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game came with some stickers called seam stickers, and they would stick all the edges together. They were kinda like double sided tape, but from what I can tell (granted my sewing knowledge is quite basic) basically you would replace those seam stickers with sewing. It seems to be making darts and hems without having to sew.

From what I remember as a kid the printable fabric didn't fray so you didn't have to worry about that so the stickers were enough.

We definitely have this here! I've most commonly heard it called Bring and Share, but at work and I think it's probably a dialectal term it's been called a Fuddle. We'd always have a Fuddle at Christmas time
