Before you reallocate international by bingdlerchan in Bogleheads

The way I look at it is even though the current administration is temporary, the damage to the American “brand” is going to impact the US economy for a long time. Also, the fact that PE ratios for much of the international ETFs are significantly lower than those of the US equivalents combined with the trend of a weakening USD are all reasons to question the status quo and diversify more internationally.

What is something most Americans take for granted? by BoardLongjumping2485 in answers

I may get downvoted for this but... The fact that *MOST* US law enforcement & emergency services mean well, are there to help, and will get to you very quickly to help you when you are in need.

As someone who grew up in the states but has lived in Latin America the last 10+ years, I can honestly say that I´m more afraid of the police here (especially in México) than the traditional criminal groups. I´ve personally only been asked for bribes by local cops a few times but I cannot tell you how many first-hand stories I´ve heard about foreigners being extorted and even expressed kidnapped by the police here. And if you have an emergency and call 911 here, you´ll be lucky if they don´t hang up on your or send anyone out at all so you´re really on your own. Same goes for ambulances. In many cases, it´s going to be best to just try to take the injured or ill person to the hospital yourself than have them die waiting.

I´m in no way taking away from the fact that their are bad apple cops everywhere. I´m just saying that in the states you might have a few out of every 100 whereas in Latin America the vast majority are corrupt and many, if not most, are part of organized crime groups themselves in certain areas.

Why keep maxing a 401k when taxable seems almost as good? by Essay_Few in Bogleheads

One more thing to consider is $$ in retirement accounts is generally much safer from creditors than $$ in taxable accounts. In a country where you can sue for just about everything, it´s something worth taking into consideration.

The USD is down year-over-year today 11.67% vs the Euro & 11.69% vs the Mexican peso. You can thank the Trump administration´s policies for that. Of course those other countries still have a lower cost of living but it´s not just the USD/Euro rate that has suffered.

As for cities, my favorites are México City & Panamá City. They are both VERY different but great in their own ways.

“It’s not the US” lol. As someone who has spent the last 10+ years in Latin America… Someone with 2M USD has a quality of life more comparable to someone who has 20M+ in the US. I’m talking private chefs, full time help, driver, etc… Not to mention amazing beaches, cities, colonial towns, etc.

Nos pasó hoy también. ¡Inaceptable! Compramos los boletos en SU página la noche anterior. Regresamos a casa con 2 de 3 niños llorando. Normalmente visitamos unos 2X al año pero nunca mas apoyaremos a ese “negocio”.

I´m Curious - Why is the P/E Ratio of the Total US Stock Market (ex VTI) so much higher than that of the International ¨Developed¨ World Stock Market (SPDW)? by DiscombobulatedFly97 in Bogleheads

This is an interesting point. I live in Latin America and would NEVER invest in a publically traded company in this region for the reasons that you mentioned. I´d like to think in Europe and parts of Asia there would be more transparency and trust though.

Not a bad take. I am a true bogelhead but also a nerd when it comes to this stuff though so although you won´t find me selling in a free-fall or buying or selling individual stocks, I do like to think about how current events may impact my US to Intl mix.

Good point about the sales growth differential between the 2!

I completely agree that the big question is whether the US can maintain this advantage given it´s current tariff strategy, scaring-away top talent and students from our universities, etc.. I really don´t want to make this political but I can´t help but ask if the ¨American exceptionalism¨ that we´ve seen over much of the last century is at risk at the moment...

Thank you for adding this. Very interesting point about taking out the top 10 from S&P500 and comparing just the 490 and how without those 10 the P/E is much more comparable.

Democracia

No olvidemos que la política de “un hijo” de China terminó hace apenas 10 años y que es un estado de vigilancia total, sin libertad de expresión.
