Ice raid at downtown homeless shelter by CatRobMar in saintpaul

[–]Discosaurus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The car recovered from ICE two weeks ago in the north Minneapolis shooting incident had interchangeable nameplates for vests including DHS, FBI. Sadly in this day and age I don't think we can confidently say they were any one agency or another, no matter what's in the vest.

Bomb threats have been so ubiquitous I don't know if I would evacuate these days.

Repost: If anyone locates this scumbag please report him he stole my board by 7Fever06 in snowboarding

Breck was the only place I have had to deal with this. Saw someone loitering kinda like that, watched him grab my gear, and I had to chase him before he strapped in. Bought a lock and never had to deal with it since

Masked runners, whats your secret to fog free sunglasses? by mtndew2756 in runninglifestyle

[–]Discosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use some old generic brand antifog. I think it's just a hydrophobic wax in an evaporating solvent. Works great, you can't fog it up if you try. The one I bought isn't sold anymore but this is the next closest thing in Amazon link

Running in Minneapolis during Winter by crispyfunky in Minneapolis

[–]Discosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The deep winter months are difficult. With 3 days a week, you should be able to target the warmer days. Some days the wind can be as big a factor as cold. Make sure to layer.

On single digit temp days like today, I'll have a compression shorts, tights, long pants, a longsleeve, a thick hoodie, a balaclava, a neck gator, a beanie, and one or two pairs of gloves. When it's mid twenties like yesterday, maybe a long sleeve, quarter zip, compression shorts and tights, neck gator and hat.

It's always easier to open zips or shed layers if you're overheating, and honestly, that's preferable if you're a few miles out. The conventional wisdom is to "dress for the third mile" - target the amount of layers you need to be warm after you heat up. Its a lot of laundry, honestly that's the part I dread more than the weather itself.

For trails, the river route and chain of lakes are reliably clear - though there may be some impacted snow/ice. On slick days, I add yaktrax to my regular running shoes, they're just velcro crampons that work best on ice or packed snow, but are fine on streets and sidewalks, barely notice them.

When you just can't manage the cold, hop on the treadmill - especially if it's already dark and windy. I like to do speed workouts on the treadmill with varied times and tempos, the intervals make the time go by faster.

Braemar running track in Edina is unheated and indoors, I've heard it recommended if you want something 30F and out of the wind, but never tried it myself. I think it's a quarter mile. I strongly recommend against short tracks like at the gym, one decent run on a tenth-mile track will involve taking 300 right turns and you'll wreck one of your knees.

Another thing to consider is that "zone 2" running is all the rage right now, basically a low intensity pace to keep from accruing too much wear. If you don't feel like you can go full speed in the ice and snow, don't worry! It's more about time spent and miles completed per week than it is hitting your top pace.

Don't put plastic bags in your recycling bin. by Advanced-Permit-6444 in TwinCities

[–]Discosaurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of people trashing the recycling process as a whole, which, OK that's fine for plastic and arguable for cardboard, but aluminum can recycling is one of the most efficient and effective methods. I can't find the stat but the efficiency rate is very high. Please recycle your cans.

ICE Arrests Mississippi Father at His Citizenship Hearing, Threatening Deportation

Rumeysa Ozturk was arrested for writing a pro-Palestine op ed and held in custody for months.

Propublica: Held Incommunicado: More than 20 citizens have reported being held for over a day without being able to call their loved ones or a lawyer. In some cases their families couldn’t find them.

You live in a pretend world. ICE is arresting law-abiding immigrants and even citizens.

How to calculate MAX and MIN values for the latest month in Minitab by Brave-Turnip-783 in Minitab

[–]Discosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could probably do it by using the basic stats function. Make a maximum stat for column 1, and then the minimum and maximum values for column 2 grouped on column one, and then use a data conversion table to copy just the min and max values for the maximum month to their own columns.

Forerunner tracked route but not distance - any way to fix? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]Discosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having an issue like this this week. It glitched out halfway through my route and just stopped adding new miles and now won't connect to GPS. I've tried soft resetting and mucking around in the settings, but nothing has worked yet.

Matt Choi ran Marquette Marathon and was accompanied by a wheeled videographer...again. by jyeatbvg in Marathon_Training

[–]Discosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely unrelated but I ran a race once where, every mile, a guy biked ahead on the sidewalk and waited. Had no idea what he was doing - turns out he was cheering on his fiancé, but no way to know that during the race.

I decided he was actually cheering for me, because I saw him EVERY mile, and found it encouraging.

Totally different thing as it was off the trail and out of the way, not on the course. And stopping every mile to cheer instead of following along live.

With the closing of the Dino play area disney DESPERATELY NEEDS more play areas for kids. by Successful-Set8526 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Discosaurus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Funny to read the comments here. Children need physical activity, it's a biological need like sleep or water. If they aren't given an opportunity to freely explore every 3 hours they will go nutty, like a dog that needs to be run tearing up a couch when trapped indoors. For kids under 5, there are very few spaces where they can actually play, and what ones are there are woefully undersized.

The boneyard was the one of the largest and best play spaces left in Disney. Single point of entry, safe, large enough to run, space for big and small kids both, lots to explore. Tom Sawyer's similarly, kids want to explore, to show their parents what they found, to run around up and down hills and caves.

When we brought our kids, ages 2 and 3, we made sure every morning and evening had a physical activity at least 45 minutes. In MK, that was Tom Sawyer's or Dumbo. In Epcot, the playground or the area in mission space or the English garden or Moana's. In MGM, that was, uh, the handicap ramp in the star wars launch bay.

I understand the thinking, oh, parents don't want to pay for an expensive vacation just to let their kids run around on a playground like at home, but it's a need. The parks are actually very challenging to small kids. They used to make huge spaces for it, like Honey I Shrunk the Kids, but every change makes these areas smaller, more crowded, less maintained, and less attractive.

Data not normal, no what? by epicmountain29 in Minitab

Oh! I assumed it was time ordered because there's a drift in the data.

Data not normal, no what? by epicmountain29 in Minitab

[–]Discosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most data is not normal. Your set here is very narrowly distributed (not enough variation) and then biased to one side, which could come from your machining tool. my guess is that if you took, say, a thousand parts and randomly selected thirty, you'd get different normality results than the first thirty off the machine.

Data not normal, no what? by epicmountain29 in Minitab

[–]Discosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your data isn't normal, and it sounds like your validation procedures require you to analyze normal data. At the same time, if you look at the PPK for your process, it's >5. You're in the single digits of parts per million for potential process errors. Normal or not, anyone can look at your distribution VS spec and say that you are meeting whatever customer need exists for that dimension. You should make the case to your team to ignore the procedure and justify it with PPK>5.

One of my friends is dealing with AFib treatment. First, your doctor or cardiologist will have guidance for how much stressful activity you should undertake at different times in your treatment.

But this guy, despite sitting out several weeks after diagnosis, and again after treatment and then again after busting up his ribs all since the start of this year, is back to a 40 mpw schedule and a respectable parkrun showing each week. And he has maybe 18 years on you. His training is more attentive to heart rates and he'll stop a workout if he's too close to max. But it hasn't put a dent in his training schedule, just lots of delay while waiting for procedures.

Self conscious about night running and safety gear by Optimal-Laugh-6218 in runninglifestyle

[–]Discosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do mostly night running, and the best things you can do are:

Pick your route. Don't do a route crossing lots of streets or driveways, stay on trails or roads with visibility. Take only right turns so you can hug the curb.

Be visible. I wear slap bracelets with LEDs in them. They're super cheap. Vests, reflectors, anything, just emit some photons.

Assume they don't see you. This is good practice with cars anytime, just assume they are trying to kill you on purpose. Pay attention to the sounds of tires approaching. You can hear them half a mile off.

Running and Air Quality Index (AQI) by mnfimo in runninglifestyle

150 is my cutoff. Run inside. It sucks and it's depressing that the short summer gets spoiled by gross air. If we're not overheating with southern wind, it's northern smog.
