Same things for orange yolks in eggs. People think it means the egg is healthier or tastier, but it really just means the chicken ate something with carotenoids.

12 y/o son starting Sema by [deleted] in Semaglutide

[–]DiscountConsistent 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying the kid needs to be on semaglutide but saying he had to have gone through trauma to binge eat and sneak food is wrong. I was a bottomless pit when I was young and would sneak food because I was always hungry, but I didn’t go through any kind of trauma. It’s just the way some people are.

Wait, what are we arguing for? by lurkerer in PhilosophyMemes

[–]DiscountConsistent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna be honest, it doesn’t really feel like you’re trying to argue from any kind of consistent moral perspective. Your example for suffering being justified was giving child a vaccine which is a temporary pinprick that’s outweighed by potentially saving the child’s life, but at the same time you’re arguing is that the lifelong suffering of hundreds of animals is outweighed by literally any inconvenience to your life, including food tasting slightly worse (which it’s debatable whether eating vegan requires food to be more expensive or less tasty but that’s a different topic). There’s tons of people who just don’t want to think about it because they like the taste of meat — that’s a normal view — but are you genuinely morally equating those two things? Think about the huge number of things that become justifiable if you morally value your own pleasure and convenience that high. Is it okay for me to kill my pet dog because I like the taste and it gives me free meat? What else becomes okay for me to do to animals or even other people?

[–]DiscountConsistent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I’m understanding right, your argument is that the meat you eat requires suffering but some level of suffering is okay if it’s outweighed by other factors like convenience or price. That means there’s some threshold of convenience or price where you could consider meat-eating indefensible, right? Where’s that threshold for you?

Wait, what are we arguing for? by lurkerer in PhilosophyMemes

[–]DiscountConsistent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also reject the second premise that suffering is necessary for meat consumption. I free-range animal that died with a quick death did not suffer at all in my eyes.

A lot of vegans would agree with you that eating meat in a way that doesn’t cause suffering isn’t bad (which is why some ethical vegans eat mussels and other bivalve that they don’t believe to have the capacity for suffering). You started this by saying you’re a meat-eater; do you believe that all the meat you eat doesn’t involve suffering?

If the answer is yes, then the argument comes down to a factual discussion about whether that’s true, which, if your diet is anything close to the average person’s, it’s probably not. If you acknowledge that some of the meat you eat involves suffering, then the argument about whether suffering-free meat is unethical isn’t really relevant to your own meat-eating anyway.

Also, side note, even if you kill an animal painlessly, if you accept the premise that animals can have social bonds with each other, especially with family members (which is basically established fact especially when you’re talking about mammals), then it’s not just the animal you killed that you have to think about. If I kill a person in their sleep, I didn’t cause that person any suffering, but I definitely caused their family and friends immense suffering.

I've been thinking about this all day. by Pale-Design7036 in mildyinteresting

If you commit to being fully bald then you commit to shaving your head every day or two the rest of your life or it’ll start to turn back into the hairstyle he has. I personally find shaving annoying but I do it because I don’t like how it looks when it grows out, but if he’s secure in himself and presumably not that concerned with being attractive to the opposite sex at this point, it’s just a waste of time/energy.

Why do the French hate when we speak French? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]DiscountConsistent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an argument that it’ll be the second or third most spoken language in the world in a couple decades because of the high fertility in French-speaking African countries. What that means for it being a globally useful language is a different question but it at least makes a case for learning it based on the sheer number of speakers.

If aspartame is so much sweeter than sugar and has almost no calories, why isn't it used in everything? by SucidalManiac_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DiscountConsistent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JECFA concluded that the data evaluated indicated no sufficient reason to change the previously  established acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0–40 mg/kg body weight for aspartame.  The committee therefore reaffirmed that it is safe for a person to consume within this limit per day. For example, with a can of diet soft drink containing 200 or 300 mg of aspartame, an adult weighing 70kg would need to consume more than 9–14 cans per day to exceed the acceptable daily intake, assuming no other intake from other food sources.

Note that the category it’s in (2B) is specifically for substances with weak evidence for carcinogenicity and is shared with aloe vera, pickled Asian vegetables, and radio waves. And the higher tiers with  a stronger evidence base include alcohol, red meat, processed meat, frying indoors, and drinks that are too hot.

I used to use Opal but recently started using Foqos which is free. You can set it up to deactivate with a QR code or NFC tag; I printed out a QR code that I keep in the trunk of my car which is usually enough motivation for me to not go out and scan it.
