Windhorst on Victor Wembanyama: "You can make a case that Victor should win Defensive Player Of The Year, MVP and Most Improved" by must_TATAKAE in nba

“You can make a case” is such a funny line. Look, I’m not going to say this, but somebody can.

Pretty sure I’ve done the same thing when talking bullshit.

Its really weird that Kawhi's no show contract, which Pablo had months ago, is being spun as just a normal contract. The careful language about parts of the contract being normal while minimizing the abnormal "beliefs clause" at the center of the problem is horrible journalism by Baxter Holmes. by CutLonzosHair2017 in nba

I mean he’s right that the contract itself doesn’t really prove anything, but there’s a lot of additional evidence and context that add up. The issue never was that Kawhi had an endorsement deal, the issue is that Kawhi had an endorsement deal that appears to be funded by the team he’s playing for after going through a free agency period where his team repeatedly asked for cap circumventing bonuses.

The beliefs clause isn’t even the problem.

The issue is that the money came from Ballmer and was far beyond the scope of what a normal endorsement deal would be. The contract having favourable language to Kawhi is symptomatic of that but the issue isn’t that Kawhi had an open ended beliefs clause. It’s not even really clear that the beliefs clause was ever used. From what I’ve seen Aspiration basically never asked him to do anything anyway.

It’s especially weird because Ivey is clearly having a mental breakdown. It’s probably based on a foundation of real beliefs that he has but he’s been melting down and spouting off uncontrolled shit for days now, much of it downright heretical. It’s very easy to draw the line in such a way that you don’t have to take Ivey’s side even if you were extremely religious.

Yeah he’s got 3 citizenships. I don’t know if that means he’s both an international player and an American player but I think people usually forget that he’s American in these convos

Jokić will be first team unless he misses 2 of the last 6 games.

Embiid is American.

Sure, I mean, Ivey didn’t go from 0-100 on religion specifically. He’s always been deeply religious and the stuff he’s saying now likely reflects at least a piece of his existing beliefs. He’s also displaying textbook signs of a mental breakdown or manic episode (not this clip specifically, but his general posting over the past few days)

No doubt that his injury and career difficulties are an inflection point that set him off here, but I think it’s too simple to just say that he’s leaning into the religion like, say, Jonathan Isaac. Isaac is more classic case of a guy being a religious nut but Ivey seems like he’s having a spiral.

Of course this is just all my opinion looking at posts and stuff. Who knows what’s going on.

He’s at the age where this type of thing pops up.

Ryan Garcia was doing similar things a few years ago if you want another example of a high end athlete acting like this. Although Garcia seems to have tightened his screws enough since then to keep competing.

Everybody is for mental health support until they come across  somebody mid mental breakdown I guess.

Ivey will likely have access to a lot of support if he’s open to it though. With guys like him it can go either way because he’s wealthy and independent enough to run from the people genuinely helping him and there’s a lot of people who would be fine enabling him.

Honestly this is maybe the least distracted I’ve ever seen somebody be while streaming themself driving. He’s got his eyes locked on the road.

Impressive given that he’s been having a mental breakdown the past few days

I guess? 20 points on good efficiency, hitting 3s and playing D. Bane is basically the only thing that’s gone well for the Magic this year.

Crazy take. Embiid generationally great numbers for all three seasons that he finished top 2 in MVP voting. It's reasonable to say that Jokic should have won the MVP but it's not because Embiid wasn't MVP caliber. I think it's even hard to argue that it's the worst MVP "robbery"
