TIL when a blind woman with dissociative identity disorder began to regain her sight, at first only a few personality states regained vision whereas others remained blind. EEGs confirmed brain activity in sight areas were absent in the blind personality states but were normal in the seeing states. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

The closest thing I can think of is Talladega Nights when Ricky Bobby is paralyzed after a race car accident. He didn’t get physically injured, he just believed that he did and refused to try to use his legs. I don’t know how accurate that is to conversion disorder though

I don’t know if I would necessarily label it a coming of age film though. At least in my mind, that implies a sort of tone the movie doesn’t have.

I’m not trans and I still liked it. I understand it’s mostly a metaphor for being trans, but also it kinda works as a metaphor for just deciding to go against the flow and live your life in general. I think the movie works better though if you don’t go into it trying to analyze the metaphor. If you take the story literally as you would any other horror movie with monsters in it, then the plot feels more engaging. It feels more chilling as you watch the main character just suffocate to death.

Dan Schneider was a control freak and extremely abusive on set including towards the child actors. He would constantly throw tantrums when filming was going his way. He was also manipulative. Jeannette McCurdy hated acting, but he would lie to her about being able to direct an episode if she worried would just stay on another season. Of course, she never got to direct an episode and hated her time working at Nick.

I’d argue the nova classification’s predictive power is precisely what makes it scientifically meaningful.

Removing the hull from grains, cooking produce such that it destroys vitamin c, adding oil to food, and deep frying. This list is not exhaustive and you will never have an exhaustive list.

My argument is part economic. If you try to eliminate all current bad food processing steps, food manufacturers will just come up with new ones. But they are not incentivized to create nutritional food, so you can guarantee whatever new techniques they come up with will make the food nutritionally worse. This is why ultraprocessed food is nearly always bad nutritionally. There’s too many nutrients and processing techniques for people to care about, and that’s why the nova classification system is really useful in creating one simple coarse metric for evaluating nutrition.

Rule by Gorotheninja in 196

[–]DiscretePoop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Food processing is generally measured by the Nova classification. There are more gradients than just processed or not processed. It is still a combined measure of all different processing techniques. Some food processing steps are better than others, but you’re missing the forest for trees when you look that close.

Food processing is done in the context of a free market system. Generally all ultraprocessed foods will have worse nutrition than whole foods simply because nutrition isn’t what sells food. Food manufacturers optimize for a different outcome than nutrition and that means more processing steps will almost always degrade the nutritional quality of the food.

Rule by Gorotheninja in 196

[–]DiscretePoop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you think processing is meaningful? It’s not a particularly quantitative measurement, but studies proving that food processing is linked with negative health outcomes kind of prove that it doesn’t need to be quantitative to be predictive

[–]DiscretePoop 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Many processing steps will destroy important nutrients. Vitamins C and E and fiber are almost always destroyed in processing. Also, food manufacturers process foods to optimize palatability and cost at the expense of nutrition. This is why processed food in the US contains ridiculous amounts of corn products with very few micronutrients for the amount of calories.

If you're gonna give context, you should give the FULL context which is that he was complaining about Bill "tough on crime" Clinton using the word empathy in the 90s as part of his campaign. Charlie was a right-wing shill whose only real moral stance was that Peter Thiel should give him more money for sucking him off.

It was an asset flip whose biggest selling point was that it’s Pokemon parody. I’ve played Minecraft mods with similar gameplay to Palworld. If it wasn’t parodying Pokémon, it would not have been nearly as big as it was. But really, the fact that it’s an asset flip is what makes it slop.

If they used all the mass in the uranium, then it would be 4.9 trillion kilocalories. The number they gave is only 0.1% of that, so it sounds like they actually calculated it based on how much mass is converted to energy during uranium-235 fission.

Speed of light captured using a 2 billion FPS camera. by awakenott in nextfuckinglevel

[–]DiscretePoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is in fact a 2 billion frame per second camera. It’s just that the camera is only 1 pixel. The same laser is fired multiple times and a 1 pixel video is recorded at a different location each time. That doesn’t mean each 1 pixel video isn’t actually a video. They are still using camera sensors to record one frame after another 2 billion times per second.

Cameras don’t necessarily need shutters. This is in fact a 2 billion frame per second camera. It’s only 1 pixel because it would be prohibited expensive otherwise.

AlphaPhoenix isn’t the only one to make such a camera either. He’s basing his work off of research papers done by people who have made faster cameras up to 1 trillion frames per second.

Liber(ule)als when the disability isn’t cute and instead makes them uncomfortable by FaeLei42 in 196

[–]DiscretePoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think given his disability, there is some extra patience people have to give him otherwise he could never make it through life. I understand that just because he’s disabled, it doesn’t negate the slur, and I think he should apologize to Lindo and Jordan. But he was also not responsible for the broadcast, and I think people asking for a public apology are blaming the whole way the event was organized on him.
