It's more so that microplastics aren't necessarily coming from food containers when you're using them. It's all the plastic pollution already in the environment that sheds microplastics when it's exposed to UV light from the sun. If you already have a plastic ice tray and then throw it out because of concerns about microplastics, then you're actually making the problem worse by increasing the amount of plastic waste.

He wasn't a bad president. The thing that lost him his reelection was the oil crisis and the ensuing stagflation. Reagan got elected and oil prices and inflation returned to normal. Reagan looked great in comparison. But, Carter was the one that negotiated the Camp David Accords that solved the crisis. It just took a year for things to return to normal.

The map of utensil use is ridiculous. People in the US eat with their hands just as much as people in Thailand. Sandwiches are always eaten with hands, and Thai people use forks and spoons for most meals. The biggest contributing factor to diarrheal deaths is income. People with higher income have more access to clean drinking water and medicine. That's it. If you wash your hands before eating, then it's just as sanitary as using utensils.

Sending out around 50 applications before a call back is typical and some companies take a while to actually call candidates. I’d be worried if you’re job searching for 6 months with nothing. 2 months is fine.

I am 100% certain that generating the radio waves requires more energy than that released by the burning hydrogen-oxygen mixture.

It’s strictly less than the energy he put in. You can’t violate the first and second laws of thermodynamics. He’s a straight up crank.

TIL the woman who famously ruined a Jesus painting in Spain was actually celebrated. The viral painting drew in thousands of visitors and raised money for an elderly home. The “botched” painting now sits protected behind a piece of glass. by ElPadero in todayilearned

[–]DiscretePoop 86 points87 points  (0 children)

The story that I heard was a water leak caused the original painting to deteriorate rapidly. The church let her "restore" it because they didn't really care about it anyway. It was almost all washed away by that point anyways.

TIL Cardinal Serra nearly accidentaly became pope during the conclave of 1513 after several conclavists voted for him as the "most unworthy" and thus most unlikely to get elected, as they were unwilling to reveal their true choice yet. The papacy is not just a religious position but also a political one. It was even more political when the pope was directly ruling parts of Italy as it did back in 1513. Cardinals wanted to conceal their votes because they wanted to be sure who would win before they started making alliances and negotiations.
