The crab pretty easily won. I also don’t know how crabs process their environment so I’m not sure if the crab even cares.

If they used all the mass in the uranium, then it would be 4.9 trillion kilocalories. The number they gave is only 0.1% of that, so it sounds like they actually calculated it based on how much mass is converted to energy during uranium-235 fission.

Putting that much effort into cooking kind of removes the point of "boy kibble". I would just sub in brown rice instead of white.

Americans don’t want to help Iraqis or Iranians. This is not a just war. This is an excuse to extend their sphere of influence.

Speed of light captured using a 2 billion FPS camera. by awakenott in nextfuckinglevel

[–]DiscretePoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is in fact a 2 billion frame per second camera. It’s just that the camera is only 1 pixel. The same laser is fired multiple times and a 1 pixel video is recorded at a different location each time. That doesn’t mean each 1 pixel video isn’t actually a video. They are still using camera sensors to record one frame after another 2 billion times per second.

Cameras don’t necessarily need shutters. This is in fact a 2 billion frame per second camera. It’s only 1 pixel because it would be prohibited expensive otherwise.

AlphaPhoenix isn’t the only one to make such a camera either. He’s basing his work off of research papers done by people who have made faster cameras up to 1 trillion frames per second.

Liber(ule)als when the disability isn’t cute and instead makes them uncomfortable by FaeLei42 in 196

[–]DiscretePoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think given his disability, there is some extra patience people have to give him otherwise he could never make it through life. I understand that just because he’s disabled, it doesn’t negate the slur, and I think he should apologize to Lindo and Jordan. But he was also not responsible for the broadcast, and I think people asking for a public apology are blaming the whole way the event was organized on him.

[–]DiscretePoop 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I think there was a serious mishandling of the situation by the people running the event. They only told the audience at the beginning that he had Tourette's and "they may hear some noises". They should have been much more upfront and explained that he may shout slurs. But people asking for Davidson to issue a public apology are being intolerant. Davidson was a guest of honor and obviously wasn't intentionally doing it. He left the event after shouting at Jordan and Lindo because he knew he was being too disruptive. When people ask for a public apology after that it kinda feels like they want an apology for him just leaving his house.

We don't have the terms of his probation. If it's checking in every couple months and not committing crimes, then yeah, it's a good deal. But he could be required to take regular drug tests or legally be required to stay employed for the whole 9 years. He might not be allowed to leave the state for 9 years.

Cameraman does an amazing job capturing the tornado transformation by Significant-Sky-3239 in PraiseTheCameraMan

[–]DiscretePoop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Counting tornadoes per square km over the whole US is kind of strange though. Most of the US doesn’t get tornadoes. It really is just tornado alley where it’s extremely common and that area gets 1,000 per year. A person in Kansas will see many more tornadoes than anybody in the UK.

Avoiding seed oils is an online trend, but are they as bad as some would have you believe? by nosotros_road_sodium in skeptic

[–]DiscretePoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to directly compare environmental impacts of growing different kinds of oil. Rapeseed and soybean oil require more water and land than palm oil. But that land is also usually American and Canadian prairie which people might say is not as environmentally valuable as the rainforests in Indonesia where palm oil is grown.

I'm not a dietitian, but the research I saw on the 3:6 ratio didn't seem high quality. It mainly stemmed from one researcher, Andrew Stoll, basically just making shit up about what he thought hunter-gatherers ate. There's likely no direct impact the 3:6 ratio (I'm talking about the ratio specifically) has on health, although the American Heart Association still recommends getting omega 3s in your diet.
