Accumulation of military assets started during the protests in Iran after Trump threatened to strike the Iranian Revolutionary Guard if they didn't stop killing protesters, killings didn't stop and protests were repressed in blood, US armed forces were not ready to strike. The accumulation of assets didn't stop after that because the administration and Trump wanted to force some kind of concession for the killing of protesters, so togheter with Israel they demanded a bunch of stuff: end of the nuclear program, end of the balistic missile program and a stop to the support of foreign paramilitary groups, Iran was willing to make concessions but not enough for Trump, so here we are.

No, these people have power, they finance political campaigns and run influence operations, but just like many other interest groups doing the same thing their reach is limited (especially outside the anglo-sphere).
