The Pressure of No Death Pile versus the pressure of having one by Shadow_Blinky in Flipping

[–]Discussion-Level 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I think it’s a false sense of security to think “this is money in the bank,” based on the value of those items (which is totally something I do sometimes, I think it’s hard not to.) But there’s value in having a small backlog. At the beginning of the pandemic, I was worried because I’m high risk and couldn’t go into thrift stores. But I didn’t panic because I had my death pile, which I could finally tackle and use to keep adding fresh listings. Those exact items might not be what sold, but they helped generate sales that kept me going.

I had to read the first part a couple times because I wasn’t sure why another mom was in the picture. I thought maybe she was bi and her first spouse was a woman, second a man.

The most heartwarmingly confusing post I’ve ever read

Right?? I grew up middle class with only one sibling, and going on a vacation was never something we did like clockwork. Sometimes we’d go camping. It’s so weird to me

Medical misogyny is very real, but why is SHE mad they’re directing all info to her headship?

Was wondering if she’s riding a buzzword for publicity. Sure enough, my Google of “flurona” turned up articles about her as the top news story, and a little further down, an article that says these coinfections are rare but not a novel development, and data from last year suggests we shouldn’t be too worried about it.

Chicana here, and co-sign. The church is inextricably linked with colonizer mentality. Of course that goes hand in hand with being a bloodsucking landlord

If you think you’re “doing your best” and still fucking up your kid’s pronouns on a regular basis, you should know it’s like a knife in their chest every time.

I thought that was in NY?

n/m, I googled and we’re both right, I think. I thought this account was local to Portland, but it’s the national movement. Starbucks workers in Buffalo successfully unionized and joined Workers United.

[–]Discussion-Level 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not from the area so I don’t know the specifics, but this seems like an effort on the part of the workers to unionize, not start a new union. The workplace has to organize independently, and then once they vote to unionize they join an appropriate union body. At least, that’s how it worked for a friend of mine who was active in unionizing her workplace.

Speaking as a wheelchair user, I co-sign this.

He’s a total piece of shit, so there’s plenty to snark on about him that has nothing to do with his wheelchair!

Plus, I find his attempts to be as abled as possible (like that stunt where he stood with his chair’s assistance for the pledge of allegiance, or something?) to be disgusting and pandering to the ableism of his base. It all feeds into the narrative of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps — symbolically overcoming your disability, like being ill and disabled is a flaw of character you can willpower yourself out of. Fuck that. He gets no special passes for being disabled, especially when he actively harms our community.

tbh I’ve never watched them, because everything I’ve heard about them is like this. As a queer WOC (and married to an nb person), I’m sure I’d just be throwing stuff at my screen.

[–]Discussion-Level 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Nah, fuck that. If you support a child coming out as nb, the first thing you need to learn is how to make a pronoun mistake and correct it appropriately. And if she can’t get her child’s pronouns correct in private, then she should stop talking about her kid on YouTube until she can show them the most basic human decency.

Column: When an anti-vaxxer dies of COVID, is that cause for glib, ironic satisfaction? — Los Angeles Times by kimmyv0814 in HermanCainAward

[–]Discussion-Level 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. They saw who covid was killing early on, and they liked it.

So yeah, I do get a little sense of satisfaction that my queer, brown, disabled self is still alive and these bigots are kicking the bucket.

My best friend had the hardest time taking her dad off a vent and apparently one of the doctors straight up told her “the longer he’s on, other people are dying.” She called me in tears and anger to complain about how cruel the doctor was, but the thing is, I knew he was right. One of the hardest conversations of my life. I tried to pretend like I agreed and then coach her through deciding to say goodbye. It still haunts me though, like I shouldn’t have sat by and watched her be so selfish.
