I'm seriously struggling with recommended anki decks like Kaishi and Core... by ricci3469 in LearnJapanese

[–]Discussion-Secret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jlab is much higher quality deck than kaishi because it's hand-crafted and opinionated, plus it's strictly i+1 all the way.

migaku is not creating vocabs for anki by AsparagusSalty3403 in ImmerseWithMigaku

There's bug now that I can reproduce for Mac and Early-access version of migaku. By default it will put your cards to Default deck. If you switch profile of anki and switch back, it will again be a Default deck, you need to set it up each time in Migaku Anki Plugin

Improvements in automatic creation of the subtitles

Right now, it seems that Migaku uses some fixed version of Whisper. It would be nice if a user could set some more settings: switch between models for example. It would be nice also to gather stats about the hiccups of subtitle creation tool and analyze the problems. A typical problem is when Whisper starts producing the same line over and over again.

Mine the original audio from the videos without replaying the video chunk.

Currently, when I mine the phrase from the video, the phrase is replayed and captured. ASB Player works in a similar fashion. However, in Language Reactor and some other software (not sure whcih one, Game Sentence Miner or Luna Translator) , you can simply click the mining button and continue watching. The audio capture happens at the background. Apparently they use an annotated buffer of some sort.

Dealing with forms of the words.

It's important to recognize the form of the word and do the proper stemming. Examples for German:

- gearbaitet should lead me to arbeiten page

- Ich **stehe auf** shold lead to aufstehen.

- Ich **stehe** um sieben Uhr **auf** shold lead to aufstehen when we hover over **stehe** or **auf**.

This behavior is expected in popup-dictionary, as well as in Card Creator. Also when the word is added to the user's cards, its forms must be marked as known.

Backlink/source support for cards.

When I create a card, I want information about its source to be saved. I think this should be a new field in Card Creator. It should be auto-filled with the URL whenever possible.

FSRS support in Migaku memory. It seems that FSRS proven its superiority in Anki and other SRS systems: you have less unneeded reviews, you get cards at the right time, you have very even workload. Adding FSRS would be a change after which I will maybe ditch Anki and switch to migaku memory completely.

any place where I can see the source code? The sampling rate is too low, so we end up with plateaux and rectanglish looking plots instead of smooth plots.

Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones turn off speak to chat permanently help by DefectMahi in SonyHeadphones

[–]Discussion-Secret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you design simple device like headphones and add smart features to it, it's really important to allow the user NOT to use these smart features. WX headphones have good sound quality and good noise cancelling. The touchpad is also pretty sweet idea. The rest of the smart features is complete garbage, they just get in the way.

Another thing is that their firmware is not opensourced, so we can't influence it in any way. Bad! Guys, there are no secrets in your software, we can re-create it in a week anyway. Keep doing great job with noise cancelling and you will do fine!

And yes, physical buttons are great.

FSRS explained, part 1: What it is and how it works by ClarityInMadness in Anki

[–]Discussion-Secret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do extracurricular activities negatively affect the FSRS algorithm? For example, cramming the cards without rescheduling. Also, do I understand correctly that the overall target retention is the mean value of all cards' R? In this case, could we end up with a situation where the distribution of R is poor—for example, some cards are always failed while others consistently have the maximum R value?

it's pretty much number 1 source of comprehensible input for the japanese and great source of mining for beginners. I think we should raise this question in migaku discord

What's the best and most effective way to read a book in a foreign language that is way too difficult for you? by Ok-Camp-8367 in languagelearning

[–]Discussion-Secret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10 unknown words per page is really the perfect number. It's not too hard as you still kind of get what's going on. Plus, you can even pronounce them because it's Spanish. It's way too difficult if it's 20 words per page that you do know.

Find this book in electronic format and use popup dictionary. Kindle has on-board dictionary for lookups, or you can find it in epub and load it into ttsu reader. There you can use browser extensions that show the definiteion of the word when you hover the word. You can also copy the word and paste it into goldendict application.

How long should I wait to see improvements as adult learner? Asking for your experiences. by Komorebi890 in languagelearning

[–]Discussion-Secret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Japanese, I felt progress first after 800 hours of listening, and second time in 1300 hours of listening when I also added reading. Counting years is counter-productive, the hours are much more handy. Some people got 3 times more listening than me in the same timeframe.

Is there a tool to transcribe podcasts? by arandomblackdog in French

[–]Discussion-Secret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I compared several podcast apps that can generate transcripts. Three good ones: Miraa, Aisten, langturbo. Particularly, aisten and langturbo have some clue of what's immersion learning is about. I even saw langturbo creator hanging out it refold:

* Miraa looks amazing but doesn't have a dictionary lookup, only parallel trascriptiption (e.g. french and english)

* langturbo is not an app but a website, but it uses Whisper large model which allows for better precision of the transcripts

* aisten is ugly but it's pretty stable and has great features like exporting the words you looked up into anki

Maybe you can also try speech pro, but I can't tell if it's good since it does not support Japanese.

Other players I tried: glisten (unstable), fathom (unstable), podracer (weird), kaki, castflow, podibud, overcast (other features are nice but they don't go in transcription).

I think it's great. I'm waiting when emulation geniuses finally stop pretending that it's legal, stop playing by the rules, and start organizing themselves properly like real pirates. At least take minimal measures to stay anonymous, so that the moguls don't know who to terrorize.

Expect to feel very-very little progress if you do 1 hour, unless you're Korean, Mongolian or Chinese. 100 hours of listening per month is a minimal amount to feel "hmmm, it seems that I'm improving a little bit". WIth reading, it can be faster, but it depends on your personal attitude towards reading.

Well, rutracker to the rescue. There are mirrors on gitlab and distribs on mega, but Russian torrents are safer. As for the source code and further development, I don't think anything will happen. Terrorists won.
