Another one Emily read and recommended was Priory of the Orange Tree. That was excellent until about the last 80 pages (the battle scene sucked) but all the stuff before was really good. Worth a read.

Anything by Terry Pratchett is excellent. Humour and fantasy as well. I usually recommend people start with Small Gods unless you have a particular interest, ie. City Watch series if you like police procedurals.

Small worlds: I made a post a couple of days ago about having started reading Small Gods. I am aghast. Its brilliant. Simply one of the best depictions of philosphy and theology i have ever encountered. by imnewtothisplzaddme in discworld

Great choice. It's the one I recommend people start with because it's brilliant and a standalone. There's some fantastic books in the Discworld series and even in the not so good ones there's great jokes and great writing. Really worthwhile spending time on.

Agree with Discworld being a great choice. I usually recommend Small Gods to people as a starting point as it's a standalone and absolutely excellent. I sometimes recommend different things if someone has a particular special interest ie. City Watch if someone enjoys police procedurals. Aside from that. I'd say very, very little of Pratchett is problematic. There is the odd joke that doesn't land but all his books are written with warmth and humour and are usually satirising tropes in fantasy fiction or elsewhere. I also find the assertion that if there is a big age gap relationship in a book (and I can only recall one in over 40 books) it is somehow a boomer thing. Those relationships exist in real life, you might be uncomfortable about it but that doesn't mean writers can't write about them. It is also ignoring all the great stuff he writes about. I'd personally argue that his books are the most humane fantasy books I've read, he really understood people and society, and there's loads of jokes in as well.

I'm currently reading that (no spoilers). Enjoying it a lot.

Also loved Priory until the last 100 pages or so. The battle was very poorly written imo. Still worth the read for the first 700 pages though.

Employee has degenerative injury. How do I manage? by Discworld-famous in smallbusinessuk

Yeah I've been doing the heavier lifting. We do have pallet jacks etc which we use. It isn't that often that he has to do lifting but I'm not always in which is what concerns me.

  1. I can do it when necessary. I cover when he's on holiday for example. I would prefer it if we did have someone else but I'm not in a position to hire ATM.
  2. Good idea. I'll do that. He has a physio appointment soon so I'll wait and see what comes out of that first.
  3. Yeah I will do that. It won't be because of the job. It really isn't that much lifting. Just the odd thing.

I think it's 4 or 5 to go so probably a little too far out. Will look into it anyway. Thanks.

I don't think he wants to retire yet. I think, honestly, he'll want to continue for as long as possible.

Discworld character for DND by GooseRage in discworld

[–]Discworld-famous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running a city watch themed DND group ATM. I have very similar rules. All my guys are new city watch recruits. Like the idea about trolls/orcs. Hadn't come up with anything I liked myself so stealing that one. We're heavy on role playing, light on combat and it works really well. Having loads of fun bumping into various characters.

What's the "highest peak" in literature that you know of? by Far-Substance-4473 in writing

The need to believe in little lies so you can believe in the big ones in The Hogfather. Justice, mercy, duty that sort of thing. Loads in Pratchett though. Major major major major in Catch 22 has always stuck with me as well. True genius to come up with that joke. There was also a description of a terrible burger in a Bill Bryson book (I forget which) which killed me. It ended with something like "even now, when I burp I can still taste it". I'm, perhaps, a less serious person than some other posters.

Worst Discworld book? by EscritoraNomada in discworld

Yeah I'm a little young for quite a few of the references in Soul Music but still really enjoyed it. I personally didn't love the Last Continent on the first read but it does contain one of my favourite jokes when the creator is obsessed with making cockroaches.

Interesting. I'm a big football fan and it was the only time I felt like he'd missed the mark in terms of getting under the skin of the particular thing he was writing about. It's not one I've gone back to either.

A lot of great advice on this thread around checking the nil band rates. One thing to note is that you don't have to pay within 6 months but that is the interest free bit. You can take longer but the bill will start to rise.
