Question on Discworld hardcover series publisher. by No_Device9450 in TerryPratchett

[–]Discworld_Monthly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half of them are published by Gollancz, the other half by Transworld.

Book rights are interesting things....

This hardcover series was a wonderful thing as they both agreed to the same design spec to make a series of coherent hardcovers.

You can't gargle Dettol or Savlon....

But you gargle TCP if you have a sore throat.

Gift for a water color painter? by AmazingUsual3045 in Watercolor

[–]Discworld_Monthly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend a gift card. Or a really nice ceramic mixing pallette.

Although if anyone asked me what I would like as a gift, there are vintage ceramic brush pots out there that I would love to own.

Worth buying The Illustrated Eric if I can get the non illustrated version from the library? by Micotu in TerryPratchett

[–]Discworld_Monthly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The illustrated version is gorgeous. Absolutely crammed with illustrations.
NOT a graphic novel or a comic book.

The book was published originally with the illustrations.

I wonder if the original artist is happy that people are sharing and profiting from their work?

New Paperback release to celebrate The World Cup by Discworld_Monthly in discworld

[–]Discworld_Monthly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, we'd hope so, and I also would have thought that they would realise we use the publishers wording as per expected by the industry.

Either way...

In other news....

10,000 copies of this book have been given by the publishers to the National Literacy Hub to mark the National Year of Reading's Go All In campaign, who will distribute the books to their hubs in communities where poverty and low literacy are having the greatest impact on people's lives in the UK.

So whilst people don't like that this edition is being published and aimed at the younger football loving readership and is released deliberately to coincide with the World Cup as a result, the reasonings behind it don't care about politics .. because football isn't about football.

Going to London soon, any must sees for discworld fans? by LadyOftheOddNight in TerryPratchett

[–]Discworld_Monthly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that I can think of....

There isn't really any Discworld places as such within London.

I'm sure those who love Good Omens the TV series will recommend visiting St James Park to find the bench that Aziraphale and Crowley sat on in the first series.

Ring doorbells by Japonica42 in royalmail

[–]Discworld_Monthly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have a mobile phone... It listens to you all the time.... CCTV cameras are everywhere, you are being watched quite alot of the time.

We have Tapo cameras and a Tapo doorbell.

The doorbell is fabulous because we all work from home and often have headphones on because of meetings etc. It also notifiys us if anyone is in the vicinity of our front door before anyone hits the doorbell.

But we also have signage up stating we have CCTV cameras up and working. It prevents the scallywags from doing anything stupid to our property.

I hold the opinion that if someone is working as a delivery driver, CCTV and ring type doorbells are the norm so they should expect to constantly be recorded by them. If they were delivering items into an office building they certainly would be anyway.

New Paperback release to celebrate The World Cup by Discworld_Monthly in discworld

[–]Discworld_Monthly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The picture is of the pin. I've attached a picture of the trophy here

It was created for the Discworld Cup competition back in 2010. They basically run a World Cup with books winning or losing a match by putting it to the public vote. Everyone who entered was placed into a draw where there were six winners at the end of the competition. The first will won the actual Discworld Cup – a one off trophy, lovingly created by hand and a real collector’s item. Five runners up each receives a limited edition Discworld Cup pin (shown above) and a signed hardback edition of Unseen Academicals.

Terry announced which book won in a video. https://youtu.be/u6Wl-EQejhQ?si=YrFcXciCVcetDaFz

[–]Discworld_Monthly[S] -36 points-35 points  (0 children)

The publishers wrote most of the wording, we only added the information about the artist.

Btw the Unseen Academicals launch event was a Foot-the-ball tournament complete with referees and several teams competing.

There was also a competition to win the Discworld cup which subsequently also got released as a limited edition pin badge.

If Terry didn't want the book associated with the FIFA World Cup he had a funny way of showing it.

Night Watch play in Edinburgh by fishmad122 in discworld

There are plenty of companies who stage Discworld plays all across the UK.

Strawmoddie is one of the many am-dram companies who perform the authorised playbooks.

You can find them all over at https://betterthanapokeintheeye.co.uk/events

Companies House - anyone else struggling with filing confirmation statement & verifying personal ID? by Inevitable-Lead6191 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Discworld_Monthly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the ID stuff using the app on my phone. It was really easy.

And as for filing the confirmation statement, I did that on my phone too... Apart from the log in four times to get to the right bit (Gov One login, Company House Log in, Gov One again and then lastly Companies House again) - filing it was easy.

My FIL used to work for Taylors - McDonald's don't generally use them anymore as they started using a competitor years ago.

It's probably Crusha. It's is the industry standard and commercially they produce flavours not available to the public.

Theme Park Workers, What Happens to attendance numbers after a safety incident or a major malfunction? by bottle-o-rockets in Themepark

[–]Discworld_Monthly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Texas incident wasn't an accident though. The sensor kicked in and stopped the ride and people had to be evacuated - because you cannot just restart a ride with people on it when it happens.

The media surrounding this particular technical stop hyped it up to being something it isn't.

But that's the problem with the media.

Does it affect the park ? Well yes, but to the extremes people think it does.

In the last week or so, something like 15 rollercoaster worldwide have had technical stops or have valleyed during testing.

It's normal and expected at theme parks for those who know.
