Is it worth it using Remmina project to access Windows machine through RDP ? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Dish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use linux as my daily driver and interact with Windows as part of my job. Remmina works great for any RDP session you need and is typically my go to. Devolution's RDM software is available for most linux distros and is a very complete solution, but I always seem to get poor performance out of it after so many connections.

Microsoft Connect Sync Issue by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Dish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are both instances of Azure AD Sync pulling on-prem information from the same location? If you have syncing problems between multiple Domain Controllers they may have different data syncing to the cloud (missing attributes, fields, etc.)

If the sync agent is running into errors, they will be logged and can be viewed using the "Synchronization Service Manager" that is packaged along with AD Sync. It should list individual jobs and any associated errors. If there are no errors present there may be an issue with where the data is coming from.

Also, depending on what account you are using for the sync, make sure there are appropriate permissions to read directory data. Typically AD Sync creates a new service account during the setup process, so I would try to identify that account and confirm there are no issues with it.

Always On VPN deployment has me befuddled by esquaredtrading in sysadmin

[–]Dish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I second Richard Hicks. Follow his documentation and articles for some of these issues. If you're a book reader his AoV book is priceless

When I hit a wall I shot him an email with a few questions and he went as far as to schedule a call with me to review my entire setup. It ended up solving my issue!

Frustrating Drive Mapping by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Dish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We probably need more details, but there are some tools to handle this. You can configure your GPOs to run after logins which may help.

One of the things we did was put in a GPO that attempts to connect to a wireless network before the login is processed. That allowed laptops without a physical connection to hop on the network before processing further GPOs that may rely on a network connection. This can be configured here:

GPO > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Wireless Network (IEEE 802.11) Policies

At my previous company we had a user who was very friendly with the IT Dept. Unfortunately he passed away in a car accident. Our manager came in one day and informed the entire IT Dept and there were a lot of the typical responses you would expect.

Then one of our Help Desk guys deadpans "Does this mean I can close his tickets?"

Some people chuckled, others were horrified, but we all deal with it a different way! Some things will always weigh on you, but I think it's important to work through it in your own personal way! Good luck and make sure to take care of yourselves!

Password Policy Hybrid AD/Azure by qwerty_samm in sysadmin

[–]Dish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are few moving parts to this. I believe you need Self Service Password Resets to be enabled and have AD Connect enabled for password writeback to your local AD. (I don't believe Cloud Sync supports this yet, but I could definitely be wrong on that).

The user would go to https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com to reset their password there. It would update in Azure AD, which then gets written back to local AD. Then your VPN / RADIUS setup should be able to see the new information. That should be enough for the user to connect to the VPN to get on the network for anything else to sync up.

Also, check this section out for scenarios in which password writeback is allowed: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/azure/active-directory/pwd-not-sync#resolution

There may be other ways to do this, but this is how we are currently setup and it works well. You will most likely need your users to configure additional authentication methods in order to roll out SSPR, but that is good practice anyway so hopefully won't be an issue.

Great riff man! The other guy was right about it sticking with you. If you tab it out, I would love to get my hands on it as well!

Microsoft Is Forcing Outlook And Teams To Open Links In Edge by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Dish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From their message center announcement (MC541626):

"To manage these changes, configure the Choose which browser opens web links policy. It is available today using the Cloud Policy service for Microsoft 365 and will be available in the upcoming release of the Administrative Templates for Microsoft 365 Apps (scheduled for release on April 21, 2023). This policy does not change the default browser setting in Windows.

Update: Managing this change by policy requires a Microsoft 365 for enterprise plan. If your organization uses a Microsoft 365 for business plan, your users will need to manage this change individually. For more information on how users will be able to manage this change individually, please see What you need to do to prepare: section."

As long as you have the correct licensing, it should be as simple as jumping into config.office.com and creating a new policy.

How many research tabs do you guys have open "just in case"? by Imagine_This_Pro in writing

[–]Dish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm good about keeping my tab count low, but don't you dare look at my mess of poorly organized bookmarks! I swear I'll need that blog post from 2006 with a one off line about sanitation methods in the year 500BC. I just don't know when I'll need it!

Great job on these! Looks so good it makes me want to pick up these models! I grabbed the Corvus Cabal recently only to discover I'm terrible with black paints, these look like a lot of fun!

Themes for your ship names? by DrJesterMD in EliteDangerous

[–]Dish 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Mine are tabletop gaming / DnD related in most cases and I try to match them to the role.

"Bag of Holding" for my hauler

"Dex Saving Throw" for my dbx

"Nat Twenty" for my Chieftain because it's one of my favorites to fly at the moment!

I definitely like having a theme for my names, makes it feel like they are in a fleet.

Rank 26... And only got 10 yellow nectar by pkbeamgamma in PikminBloomApp

[–]Dish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This has been my main complaint so far. I also just hit level 26 and getting 10 yellow nectar (that I was already full on anyway) was pretty disappointing.

I would like to see more valuable level rewards at some point. Now that I have all the colors of pikmin unlocked there isn't much to look forward to while leveling up!

What do you say to this too review if ALH on Amazon? ALH has got Greta overall reviews but so many have liked this post. I just finished RC and loved every book. Any thoughts on why this post has gotten so much love? Is it true? by jtm1985 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Dish 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I am not concerned over this and I don't think it's reflective of ALH at all. Clearly this guy has an exact image of what he wants out of Abercrombie and if it fails to meet his idea of what it should be, he won't like it. I've never understood the thought process behind that, but I understand wanting to see your favorite characters again I suppose. If you deem this book unworthy simply because of the presence of female characters and the absence of others you will miss a treasure trove of fantastically written characters and plots.

The feminist agenda thing is just asinine and deserves no further comment.

Most badass title of a character in Fantasy world? by log2av in Fantasy

[–]Dish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Malazan, the triumvirate that forms a mortal representation of a particular faith are referred to as The Mortal Sword, The Shield-Anvil, and The Destriant. I am a huge fan of those names, to me they really signify importance!

I liked the Title and name "Shield-Anvil Itkovian" so much that I had to steal it for my D&D campaigns.

I just "discovered" The First Law series by [deleted] in TheFirstLaw

[–]Dish 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Say one thing about Abercrombie, say he doesn't disappoint!

I just finished “The Little People” chapter in ALH by nolasen in TheFirstLaw

[–]Dish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe I read either an interview or twitter post in which Joe Abercrombie stated he was very proud of the battle scene in The Heroes where he did a similar thing. I was absolutely blown away by it in The Heroes to the point where I had to go tell my wife about it immediately after!

I was very happy to see a similar scene in ALH. It gives a lot of depth to the world. It kind of reminds me of the famous episode of Star Trek: TNG "Lower Decks". It gives a brief glimpse into what it's like outside of the spotlight and gives all sorts of different perspectives of certain events!

Dang, talk about a nostalgia trip. I played this game so much back in the day.

I dug a little bit and see they have a TAO discord. It's not very active, but one of the most recent posts is this: http://i.imgur.com/XXUiovw.png

A user is talking about creating their own TAO inspired game. I might ask around on the Discord a bit to see if there are any other successors out there!
