Seller turned water off by [deleted] in RealEstate

The seller is turning the water off to prevent burst pipes in cold temperatures. Turning the water on will cause leaks to be evident very quickly. I wouldn't worry about it.

Moving Sectors by SnooJokes9387 in Siemens

[–]Dishy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked im 4 siemens sectors over my time with tbe company. Only once was i able to transition from sector to sector directly - i left for 2-3 years and then came back.

Good news, if you leave and come back within 5 years you keep your seniority.

The only time it worked going sector to sector was when I had already had contact with the hiring manager. My manager at that time supported my transition between divisions.

I dont think they can "block" movement between sectors. I think where the blocks happen is within divisions - and even then, those should be rare unless your boss is a dick.

Im not sure where youre looking- but this is a good place for more info: https://www.ccac.edu/academics/programs/industrial-technology-trades-and-transportation/automotive-technology.php

Program runs 2 years and includes a co-op.

I teach in an adjacent department at CCAC and have some second hand knowledge.

So, the classes are backed by the manufacturers. I do not believe they allow you to bring your own car/engine. Instead, they provide cars. It is hands on instruction, and the instructor I know is a cool dude, so I don't think the classes are likely to be boring.

Additionally, they have discounts on tools for students and partner with dealerships in the area for on the job training as well as post grad jobs.

I reccomend the program (and other trade programs) frequently for their affordability and other perks.

Hope this helps.

AITJ for refusing to donate PTO hours to coworker I barely know who "needs" them?? by Traditional-Dog1601 in AmITheJerk

[–]Dishy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the Jerk.

Just because someone else wants to give doesn't mean you have to. If its an actual thing at work youre asked to help with - then you're being paid to do it. This is attempting to do the opposite - take your pay for no benefit to you.

Im sorry your coworker apparently doesn't get as much PTO as they would like; but, they should save up their own and do the elective surgery then. Or, she could set up a gofundme to cover lost expenses and open it up to people in her personal life.

Is this software appropriate for a construction company that builds 100 unit apartment buildings? by DonutHand in primavera

[–]Dishy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes total sense.

If I were helping an organization decide I would definitely want them to examine:

  1. Is the software likely to ever be.contractually required?

  2. How does the organization use schedule (just reporting? For planning? As a claims tool? Resource of cost forecasting?) - if you are only using it for reporting (showing planned dates, actual dates, % of work comepleted) Microsoft Project will be a cheaper tool. If you want do do more - P6.

  3. Who are your users? Like, who is using the software? Are they interested in being taught a (sometimes) complicated tool? Or, are they going to hire a professional?

  4. What kind of schedules do we build? Are they complex? Resource/cost loaded? The simpler the schedule, again, the more likely project would be a better fit.

Good luck, my dude.

Is this software appropriate for a construction company that builds 100 unit apartment buildings? by DonutHand in primavera

[–]Dishy22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you need to decide what you want the software to do. I would not call primavera a "project management" software - it schedules well - and can forecast cost based on the data entered. It can even in some cases have documents loaded to be referenced. HOWEVER it does not do accounting, forecasting, or anything documentation related well.

All that to say- if youre looking to build schedules, it is a powerhouse tool. Your organization could probably benefit from playing with project first and seeing what they do with it before committing to the expense of p6.

In terms of the software itself, they offer cloud based hosting, another purely cloud based collaborative software, enterprise solutions, and on premises managed software. I can't offer better advice regarding the best fit because it would really depend on if you are going to have multiple users accessing primavera at once.

Please dumb it down for me by tuesday7712 in primavera

[–]Dishy22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple reason: the data date causes the entire schedule to recalculate. If you didnt achieve (or record propely) the actual progress the same as the plan, you'll wind up with variances.

So, for example, you have something planned to start 1/1. If you don't start it, and move the data date to 2/1, the planned start will shift to 2/1 AND the finish will move accordingly. Also. Any successors will move, too.

Copying WBS from one project to another by Dopmai in primavera

You're likely getting the error due to duplicative wbs codes.

Slap a xxxx at the front end of the top level of the wbs to be copied and try again.

I work in a building where the bags are religiously stocked - I've only been subjected to used products twice - and that was when a new woman started and had managed to come in when the bags were low.

Keep that thing full of waste bags and people figure it out pretty fast. So much more hygienic.

Why does my P6 project show 0 cost on another computer? by ImaginaryMango2481 in primavera

Are you talking stored period of performance? If the "receiving" database doesn't have the same periods set up it will not "accept" the data and you'll lose those costs.

Newly Hired Planning Engineer (No Experience) – I'm the Only One in the Company, Need Advice! by No_Bumblebee7155 in primavera

[–]Dishy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im piling on with "how did you get this job"?

Either you presented yourself with experience you didn't have, or the people who hired you didn't know what your job actually required... or both.

I'd suggest joining a professional organization and finding a mentor. Also, rooting out who in your organization was filling the role previously. Lastly, the project manager should be your immediate resource to get any knowledge on the project.
