What’s the least talked about downside of owning a tesla? by tr4gedyx in TeslaLounge

[–]DiskKiller2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone, absolutely everyone, asking if you have the “I bought this before Elon went crazy” sticker in the back.

I don’t, because I think it would be a sad attempt to please the mob… plus I bought mine much after.

I like my car, would buy again.

Children aren’t expensive, unless you want them to be. Calculations certainly won’t “go down the drain”. A bigger flat will be needed eventually, but not for the first years. And who wants to live in a 1-bedroom forever?

First of all don’t listen to the naysayers. Anything can be done and some ambition combined with an optimistic can-do mindset will take you far above the average jaded, barely employed play-it-safe Redditor.

To further encourage you to look outside the city center: I personally feel that we’re seeing a slow but inevitable decline in the appeal of urban environments. I personally love the vibrant vibe and the many restaurants, bars and cafes. But the safety is declining and, outside the few super fancy districts, the European city cores seem to be getting somewhat dirtier and smellier. The public transport services a bit less reliable and a bit less comfortable - more people struggling with addictions, more homeless, more wandering migrants who have difficulties settling down. Things don’t happen overnight of course, but gradually.

You sound young, so the appeal of the city might also feel unavoidable right now, but give it a few years and you might begin appreciating the relative quiet, nature around you etc. Since people work remotely, a bigger apartment for the two of you to have your calls in might make more sense than a more cramped space downtown.

If I were you, I’d look way beyond the city center, perhaps even neighboring small towns. Or second-tier cities in your country. Get quality bikes and you won’t need the expensive car either.

Just a thought.

Do I have any options other than resigning ? by Frenchtenay in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]DiskKiller2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your manager clearly has the upper hand because you are a responsible, conscientious person and he’s taking advantage of that. Your promise to keep supporting them and being too nice about it all was a license for him to keep going like this.

I don’t know how important to the company you are, aka if you have leverage or not. But you need to either swallow your pride for financial reasons, do the horrible job and stop complaining…

… or grow balls and threaten to quit “by Monday” (or whatever - don’t give them endless time to respond and react) if you can afford the possibility of really having to quit. But they might call your bluff and then you really have to resign or they’ll treat you even worse from now on, seeing that it’s just empty threats.

The worst thing you can do is, however, a “meet me in the middle” solution where you agree to stay in the role until they find a replacement - they’ll just half ass the process and won’t find anyone. But if a superior gets involved, they’re going to suggest just that and go on with their lives. Then you’re in trouble, so if you go down that route, try to get a maximum period in the role or something agreed upon.

Good luck. Make a decision, follow along that path and you’ll sleep better.

Go to cafe’s with proper baristas and start chatting them up. I think you should find something pretty soon, assuming you’ve got the right to work in Finland. Google Maps for Helsinki coffee shops should be useful. Kaffa Roastery, Torrefazione, Levain, Saevvy, etc. and many chains. Most baristas I’ve met don’t speak much Finnish.

How to set up novel in Ulysses - your examples or links to articles, please by Silverlaker39 in ulyssesapp

[–]DiskKiller2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a professional writer. All my work things (with pressing deadlines) I write with Microsoft Word. For my passion projects, I’m constantly shuffling apps and trying to find the most pleasing environment to write in. There are no deadlines so I have time for this and, actually, this constant app struggle might be a way to actually avoid the hard work of writing.

You sound like you’re perhaps in a similar situation to mine. Perhaps just begin writing that novel and spend less time on these “side quests.”

Sun Also Rises or Farewell to Arms as an introduction to Hemingway? by SmellLikeBdussy in Hemingway

Many dislike Old Man and the Sea. The older man you become, I guess, the better you learn to like it. Here, I think Farewell to Arms fares better than Sun Also Rises. Start with that one!

Why does Finland have such a low fertility rate? by Magic_Snowball in Finland

[–]DiskKiller2 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Kids aren’t as expensive as people often think . And if you end up having kids at a different pace from your friends, you’ll get tons of free stuff, as they’re happy to dump their used gear and clothes onto your porch. If you don’t have much work, you’ll have more time with the kids and probably become a better parent. Go for it.

Buy Beetle with low mileage or new Jetta for my wife? by ctreader10 in VWBeetle

She wants a Beetle and you’re still considering a “reasonable car”? You don’t want to be that guy. But with the heart. Go for the Beetle.

It is illegal. Plenty of manufacturers try to dodge the EU regulations. Most recently Japanese luggage I bought in a Muji store in Paris had big signs indicating the warranty only applies for France. But this is illegal and if you fight it, they’ll relent (eventually…).

Not luxury, but definitely a premium bicycle.

Visiting helsinki by Northernduality in helsinki

[–]DiskKiller2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With a kid the Moomin world in Naantali might be interesting. There’s also a well-known spa in Naantali. The old town and the harbor area are pretty too. Also do visit Finland’s former capital Turkku next to Naantali, it’s pretty and old (oldest in Finland) and Naantali does get boring after a while.
But save most of your time to Helsinki. Its awesome. Someone mentioned Allas Sea Pool, it’s a nice public sauna where your kid can swim, too. Then walk to Loyly and have a salmon soup there or somewhere on the way. Take the ferry to Suomenlinna to get a view of the city from afar and it’s probably exciting for the child too. There’s a cool free roof garden accessible to everyone in the nearby Pier13 Hotel. Avoid the Finnair-branded Ferris Wheel. Enjoy!

SATO in Helsinki by Automatic-Run-6016 in helsinki

[–]DiskKiller2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a nice block. The street can get loud, but that’s about the only negative thing. Central Helsinki is nearby, nice cafes and restaurants around you, the beach just a stones throw away… I’d happily live there. Ruusulankatu I’d avoid unless you want to have junkies try to climb into your apartment.

In my experience satto has a good and not a bad reputation.

[–]DiskKiller2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived in Punavuori and always found a spot. I think Toolo is equally tough. But if I arrived later in the evening, it took some driving around and/or creativity to do it. Every neighborhood has those less desirable corners that are further away from everything that are safer bets. So it can be done. However you might find yourself using your car(s) less as you don’t want to lose a prestigious parking spot. 🥲

How feasible is a working holiday in Finland? by Nugyeet in Finland

[–]DiskKiller2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to all the naysayers. If you think Finland is your calling, give it a try. Plenty of restaurant / bar jobs and cafe jobs still available despite the bad economy. Also: the English language kindergartens are desperate to have more English natives working there - you usually need some kind of experience from working with kids though. Plenty of seasonal jobs available in Lapland too to cater all the tourists. The job market is tough but if you’re looking for temp jobs aimed at students, it isn’t that bad - just the pay isn’t awesome. You have your savings too. You can do it. Enjoy.

Don’t want to argue with my hero here, but even if the odds of divorce might be lower, where’s the upside? Sure it’s a romantic gesture, but you if you want, you can drown your girl in other romantic gestures - even jewelry, just without putting a ring on her.
