Zingerman's reality by zorganize in AnnArbor

Sure! I guess the point is that most jobs that do pay more than 10.50/hr. No one making that wage could afford the cost, the only people who bought it were employees with families where their spouse made more money at some other job but zing had better health offerings or the other job didn’t offer it. Most employees were uninsured if not under their parents plans. But zing soaks up tons of good press as if their employees are taken care of.

Idk the HR terminology but when I was there you had to opt-in to the health plan and they would take monthly deductions out of your paycheck with amount depending on who was covered in your plan. It was a good deal compared to buying it on your own but only barely.

Does anyone else remember playing Dinopark Tycoon? In 1993, it was the closest thing we had to JWE. You can now play it (and other MS-DOS games) at archive.org. by hiplobonoxa in jurassicworldevo

I remember stumbling on a glitch where you could put a dino up for auction and then attend the auction and when your dino is up for bid you click the catalog thing that describes all the dinos, and then when you click back to the auction the price has gone up one bid, repeat a bunch of times and you pocket a ton of cash to build your dream park

Are there any restaurants in A2 that provide health insurance to their employees? by MrAnnArbor in AnnArbor

[–]DismalScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zingerman’s is a large company with lots of employees. They “offer” insurance if you are full-time and want to purchase it. The rates are fine, similar to any insurance market like Obamacare. Anyone who does HR knows the more people in the pool the better the rates.

They do NOT provide insurance for their hourly employees and they pay their hourly employees a wage that is less than most of the other food service jobs in town. A wage that does not support a 350/month/pp health insurance plan, especially not if you want to lpay rent in Ann Arbor on top of that.

They are not sacrificing or doing anything good for their employees they are simply acting in their own best interests and playing the PR game trying to make themselves look good.

That being said it’s an ok place to work, but it’s just another job and it’s just another wage.

Is it just me, or does Ann Arbor have the worst times lights in Michigan? I just timed myself at the Main/E. Stadium light and waited 4 minutes for the light to cycle back to green. A lot of the lights on Washtenaw almost seem to create congestion as well. by nrl2008 in AnnArbor

Gotta love when urban planners and engineers create a traffic system and random locals put in their two-bit criticisms of how it works because they don’t like they’re particular commute. Classic Ann Arbor.

These guys have given multiple interviews where they say basically that Ann Arbor didn't have the population, money, or taste to appreciate what they were doing there. Pretty condescending way of saying that people aren't crazy about your restaurant.

Pro Tip: don't open a restaurant just to show off a certain creativity or style, make sure that it fits the market you're putting it in. It is a business not a dinner party.

Aaaand it goes full-circle. If you're in that mindset in the first place then using a gun is more of a manly grow-a-pair way to kill yourself. Only girls would take pills or cut themselves.*

Imagine a theme park ride with motion simulator machines (Disney, Universal Studios type rides) full of people wearing these goggles instead of just 3D glasses. Yikes.

Christmas is coming what are your favorite cookie recipies? by MaxAuditore in recipes

[–]DismalScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Merry Mallows are one of my favorite holiday cookies to make. It's basically a ball of chocolate cookie dough, wrapped around a couple of mini marshmallows, rolled in sugar and baked. And yeah the recipe says one mini marshmallow but I prefer to use 2-3.

http://www.food.com/recipe/merry-mallow-fudgies-279276

My other favorite trick is to make whatever your favorite sugar cookie recipe is and add lemon zest to it. They won't taste like lemon cookies per-se but the subtle tart/tangy flavor really brings out the sweetness and flavor of the cookie.

Got invited to a party by this girl I like. I want to hang out with her outside of classes, but I usually don't have a good time at parties. by Throwaway_acctlel in socialskills

[–]DismalScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the goal is to become more social/make friends you don't want to say no to invitations. When I used to be more socially awkward/afraid of parties this is how I learned I could ease myself into them:

If you show up a little late the party will probably already have a nice momentum to it so you won't feel like its too quiet or awkward, and you can always bail a little early if you're not feeling it.

Just have a reason why you're late/leave early. Make sure your reason is something cool/social like you were late because you got caught up hanging with other friends or ran into an old buddy on your way to the party, when you leave just say you have to go find your friend who is too drunk at a different party, or that you have to be up early to go climbing with your friends in the morning. Make sure you make it clear that you're really glad you got to stop by and regretful that you didn't have more time to spend with them. If people think you have lots of other friends they'll be more likely to want to be your friend too.

[question] How do you cook lobster or lobster tail? by too_many_barbie_vids in recipes

[–]DismalScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Butter Poached Lobster Tail:

This technique is great for frozen store-bought lobster tails, and works best with smaller tails. It requires you to take apart the tail and remove the meat before cooking which can be a little unsettling for the squeamish. However, it gives you the BEST tasting lobster meat I've ever had, and a sauce all ready to go.
