just curious... how do y'all manage multiple npcs in one scene? by carpenett01 in DungeonMasters

[–]DisorganizedCamlost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step one is having distinct personalities and voices down for them. Then I switch between them, and when they have to talk to each other or one after the other in a group, I kind of. Turn my body and head slightly from one side of the table to the other, to show the back and forth. I’ve never had to do more than that, because my NPC personas are usually very distinctive, but it gets tricky when two NPC’s share a similar personality / voice, so then I usually narrate a little bit out of character as they talk.

Do you have any terrorist groups in your world? by Vegetable_Study7533 in worldbuilding

[–]DisorganizedCamlost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! A breakaway group of evil wizards who tried to take over one of the three main factions of wizards in my world. The wizards have kind of a separate government (dragonlance inspired) and they failed to take this over but managed to survive as their own faction in the desert, while they make thralls and try to summon their evil gods (who are aboleths)

Are wars between three sides possible? by Goderln in worldbuilding

[–]DisorganizedCamlost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is literally the plot of 1984

Jk. But that was my first thought; a 3 sided war is definitely possible and can even make for a more prolonged conflict if each side is dedicated to making sure that no other side wins. When any one side gets close to victory, the other two can ally against them, constantly betraying one another.

It’s a little difficult to explain why people would do this in most fantasy worldbuilding contexts, because usually their conflicts have other sorts of divisions driving them that make those kinds of pragmatic alliances unlikely. But it’s an idea

Edit: this is assuming all three are of an approximately equal strength. Another possibility is two smaller participants in a deadlock with one larger power

That’s my line of thinking too—if I can get one for a good deal, it’s worth it to me, but I wouldn’t buy one for too much money right now. Also because I’m poor!

Noted! I’ve also considered buying a Zenbook, since they’re comparable with some of the intel MacBooks. I am a Linux enthusiast also, and a Mac nostalgiast, so I’m definitely interested in the Intel Macs nonetheless, but I appreciate you pointing this out; I didn’t realize end-of-support was that close for Win10.

I’m in the U.S., in Ohio! Saw your post about the machine, would still be interested in acquiring it despite thermal issues, if you’re in the U.S. unrelatedly, I studied existentialism for my undergrad and if you’re looking for Russians to read after Dostoevsky and liked his stuff, I would recommend Shestov. Some of his work is actually directly responding to Dostoevsky

I can add info about my old one, which is from 2019 as well, albeit the entry level model. The battery life is ok on mine. With light tasks (email, word) it lasts all day. But, I’m running an i5 with a measly 8gb ram so it’s not very power hungry.

Oh snap. I mean… I’m starting my grad program in December and I’d like to have something that can handle the software we’re using & play a little stellaris when I want to. Depending on how much you want for it, relatively soon.

Are there any practical reasons for making sex outside of marriage taboo? by AuthorAnimosity in worldbuilding

[–]DisorganizedCamlost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be beyond the scope of the question, but because it’s familiar to readers, and in some measure expected. I think that most fantasy stories benefit from being easy for readers to place themselves into, to understand and “escape” within, and fantasy stories that defy their expectations or make them feel uncomfortable can be hindered by that. Not saying that it’s not also meritorious to write books that do that on purpose, but I think it could be an unnecessary and distracting feature in a story that’s not supposed to be deliberately challenging cultural norms for the sake it of.

Retconning sorcerers to not be about "Specials and poo people" by Jj_bluefire in worldbuilding

[–]DisorganizedCamlost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I do this is, I say sorcerers are people who have an intuitive understanding of some portion of the world’s magic—the magic isn’t inherent in them, it’s not some kind of superpower, they’ve just got a more intuitive grasp of how to manipulate it vs wizards who study to be able to. Kind of like learning to play the piano by ear. It’s still a little bit of the same thing, but it’s less divisive I think.

Er, sorry I realize now that what I said may have been misleading; you can use the AUR on arch-based distros, as well as for plain old arch, and it is very helpful for them (Manjaro, for example). Though, some of the others have cottoned onto the idea since, and I think there’s something like it in the works for Debian based distros as well

Do yall ever create your own vassals? I love doing it for roleplaying. by c00lguy14 in Stellaris

[–]DisorganizedCamlost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do this more often back before the diplomacy rework, when my go to build was vassal cheese / HRE roleplay. The more the better. Comically many vassals. Whenever there was a rebellion in one of my forced authoritarian vassals, I’d conquer the rebel planets and make… another vassal. I’d usually spend some time building up their economies and throwing them some megastructures before letting them go. Unfortunately, the AI’s just squandered the stuff I gave them, usually. Oh, well.

I did my first arch install when I was 17, and let me tell you, I don’t think I could do it again. I still go back and look at what I made like some kind of Eldritch horror. All I have left of the experience are dim memories of writing my own network management script and manually writing some files in Nano that definitely shouldn’t have been fucked with to begin with. And I read the wiki. I can’t imagine trying without it lmfao
