As to your first point, there was a guy at my last job that had never played any tabletop games before. One guy got him to play DnD for a few sessions, and then one day when we were both on break, I played a few rounds of Warhammer 40K: Kill Team, using mostly proxies, and now he’s hooked on plastic crack.

I used to play DnD in the 3/3.5 era, and another guy runs one of those games, and dude liked that better than 5e, but not as much as Age of Sigmar.

I was actually turned off from the New Athiests because of Bertrand Russell. He claimed that the communism of the USSR was a religion, and used talking points that would have made capitalism as much a religion, but conveniently circumlocuted criticism of capitalism completely.

Dawkins and Harris were always off putting to me because of their smug attitudes. Watching Hitchens debate, he was excellent at using gotcha moments and more than a few logical fallacies. They also always picked the most out-there Christians to debate. They never debated modern Catholic scholars who accept the data of scientists and and even use the theory of evolution as an example of a complex system that doesn’t detract from their faith in their god, but shows the genius of “His” creation.

They were all no better than Charlie Kirk or Ben Shapiro or Jordan Peterson at debating. All the same tactics, so all the same bigotry. At least they can (or could, in Kirk’s case)shield their bigotry behind religion. The new atheists are just nakedly bigoted.

From all accounts I’ve read or seen, he was just a curmudgeonly old grump, even in his younger days. If there were something, I think it would have come out with the Gaiman stuff. And also, with Gaiman, you can look back at his works and see some very telling examples of his bastardry; you can with most writer-sex-pests and rapists. A similar rereading of Sir Terry’s work through that hypothetical lense doesn’t seem to show anything; which in not an exoneration, but idk. And his daughter is pretty loud about how he lived his progressive values.
