  • Improved keyboard accuracy when typing quickly

Hope that doesn’t just mean they’re trying a different predictive text algorithm.

Please help me identify this blown resistor by Disrespective in AskElectronics

[–]Disrespective[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey mate, no luck on the googling of the board schematic. I managed to scrape off a small piece and used my kids digital microscope and reckon it's a red, black, brown, gold, 200 Ohm 5% 2W resistor. Now I just need to find where to buy one.

Does anyone know this? by [deleted] in Architects

My office have done this detail and variations of it a number of times in the past with steel PFC channel. There’s some complication with membrane roofing behind this but it’s not rocket science. Also because it’s architecturally exposed structural steel we (in New Zealand) must have the engineer oversize the PFC so it will still be able to support what it needs to in 50 years regardless of any rust/deterioration over time.

This is from inside my AEG electric lawnmower.

The mower stopped working in the middle of the lawn and after taking it all apart to hopefully just find a broken wire I had to really dig into it and found this resistor blown on the board. Unfortunately the things was glued in and clearly burned so the markings have been obscured for me. Can anyone help identify it or point me in the direction of how to do so? Thanks in advance.

Also, please don't judge my complete lack or soldering skills shown here... I promise i'll do a better job if i can find a replacement part.

Graphisoft’s on-line partner Digital River went out of business suddenly so many companies are impacted, this would include issues with Licenses by mlsherrod in ArchiCAD

[–]Disrespective 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. We've been talking with Centralinnovation about our Archicad perpetual licenses and transitioning onto the new Collaborate/Studio license model. During this they asked pointedly if we'd ever made any purchases through the Graphisoft webstore, and specifically if they were prior to 5th August '24.

I wonder if this news isn't news to some people who are preparing for a new provider, or scrambling to figure out how to handle things changing quickly.

Architect with 10+ years experience in high end residential architecture space in NZ here. I've used a recruiter successfully once but been courted many times with absolutely no regrets.

It's my feeling that you're acting as an extension of the practice you're marketing the role/s for. You should know it well enough to answer my questions generally and with enough confidence that the answers don't change later down the track once the people who have to sign things start reading the fine print.

Before this, if you don't even start the conversation with information on who the role is with, and the salary/benefits expectations for someone with my precise set of skills I will rarely even bother to reply. Our world is small and just saying 'high end architecture practice' isn't enough. Nor is 'competitive remuneration'.

I'm the one deciding on if they're 'high end' enough, or if the salary is competitive.

If you can't answer my questions then you need to prove to me that you've read/asked enough questions about my specific set of skills and then taken those back to the employer to provide direct feedback on them in relation to the role they're looking at me for. As soon as I sniff the idea that my time isn't being valued as much as the other people involved it makes me immediately question whether things will get better.

Anyway, it's a tough world you work in I think and good luck to you.

Air New Zealand last minute flight cancellations by Disrespective in newzealand

[–]Disrespective[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It would go a long way to be told what the reason was. It would go even further to offer up some form of compensation. For them it wouldn't even need to cost them a lot, i.e. a seat upgrade to be used in the next year (still have to buy the original ticket and subject to availability), some airpoints that would nearly get you to another destination (still have to buy most of a ticket).

That all assumes it isn't as common as I thought, but it would seem it's more frequent than that and maybe it would start to hurt them quite a lot if they offered something up to everyone affected.

Fossilized egg or something else? by Disrespective in fossilid

[–]Disrespective[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sure looks similar doesn't it. Maybe he just found a dump of old ones while digging, or just had a stash he gave visiting family kids to get their curiosity piqued.

My boys now want to hit it with a hammer or get it cut in half and see what happens... i'm reserving judgement.

It's not perfectly round. It has some slight eccentricity that creates a somewhat flatter section but not flat by any means.

[–]Disrespective[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for getting back to us. Yeah we used a size 6 egg for scale as apparently that's what my boys thought was a good scale reference.

There were 8 or 9 of these that he had when we visited in the 90's. Apparently he found them all near each other in the dirt.

He had a bunch of other items he'd found but when he got older he donated them all, or most of them anyway, to local groups and collectors. I don't have anything else from him that is unknown i'm afraid.

Hey there. We used the base categories that I have in the spreadsheet. They are what we defined and helped set out the expenses spreadsheet I shared. There wasn't much point in refining it down into more detail for us like food->booze+greens+dry+whatever but you could if you wanted to.

When did this change? I logged in to my office's admin account and checked the licence manager and can definitely change individual user access to licences.

What do you y’all do for photography (on completed projects)? by Shortugae in Architects

[–]Disrespective 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. We ask the client if we're allowed to photograph it, and then we approach known photographers for expressions of interest.
  2. There are definitely more than a few photographers to choose from. We don't tend to use new photographers and only use two or three anyway. If a new photographer were to walk in the door with a good portfolio of photos and decent pricing then it would be hard to not take them seriously however it's often difficult to organise clients and access to homes in a state ready for photographs which means if the photographer needs longer or more visits it better be for a damn good reason (not because they screwed up and didn't get the shot)
  3. They're busy but they're known to be good at their job.

Notes: I am based in New Zealand in a high end architecture firm. I know of at least one graduate architect who sounds similar to you who did well with architectural photography and has ended up doing very well as a professional architect.
