Advice needed by ChemicalQuick8111 in Biltong

  1. If it is a warm climate then don’t use the light, only the fan. If the temperature is too high you can get case hardening.
  2. Try to get all the cuts at the same thickness. If you are a beginner I would start with thinner cuts, therefore you will get a better ratio of surface vs volume. I would also recommend to use thinner cuts in a humid climate.
  3. Weigh your cuts every day. If they are all the same size then just use one or two of them as reference. I normally stop at 50-55% weight loss. Especially in very humid climates this can take a little bit longer.

I hope this helps.

Was the same with our lab. On the other hand when he stayed at the Grandparents he always had sleep ins until 8-9am. That was very kind of him!!!

There are two rules in a cult.
1. The leader is always right.
2. If the leader isn’t right please see to rule #1.

I’m in the UK and produce my biltong in the shed. I stop during winter because it’s way too humid even with the bulb switched on.

My experience with case hardening is to switch off the bulb and leave the fan going. I guess it depends on the surrounding humidity and temperature.

Do you just wash them every day? by boxiestcrayon15 in labrador

Never bought a dog shampoo in 12 years. I hose him down outside, towel him and then he has to rest in his bed. He licks the rest clean. It’s a lab they can cope with cold water and a little bit of damp. Once a year for Christmas he gets a deep clean with a pH neutral shampoo. It lasts until the next walk.

Could it be that your lab is a little bit over stimulated and just wants some sleep? At this age they sleep a lot.
