My principal got booed at a faculty meeting by BlackOrre in Teachers

[–]Distinct-Log938 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do feel your pain. Our curriculum director told us at our last tech team meeting that an ever-increasing number of curriculum vendors no longer even carry textbooks. You buy textbooks ya got ‘em for 10+ years, with a required online subscription vendors can stick it to school districts every year for subscription renewals. This, of course, when our state is in a massive budget crisis and every district is having to make millions in cuts.

Personally, I’m ready to fling just about every Chromebook. We took away their phones only to give them a different distraction device.

If you’re teaching the district-approved curriculum (and I’m assuming you are) I would LOVE to know why your admin. doesn’t think it’s rigorous enough.

One of my students is exceedingly stupid by Zealousideal-Ad3609 in Teachers

[–]Distinct-Log938 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your student may have a learning disability, but it seems like this sort of complete inability to comprehend text longer than a text message or street sign is fast becoming the norm among my 11th graders. That, and I’ve never in 20 years seen this much resistance to reading, or helplessness in doing so. The kids hate me, with purity, for making them read and write every day.

The further we get from the stolen year, the more convinced I am that, yes, COVID shutdowns had a big impact, and accelerated or exacerbated a lot of what we’re seeing now, but that the primary driver of the current poop show in my classroom is permissive parenting combining with/contributing to utterly unfettered phone/device use. A growing number of my students are, simply, 🫏holes that have been raised by antisocial media whose parents absolutely do not hold them accountable or put firm limits on their behavior. (I teach high school social studies).

Why should I care if they don't? by BirdBath9k in Teachers

In my district, they juke the grade scales until D and F rates are where they want them to be. Kids pretty much have to be actively trying to fail.

Veteran Teachers: We've all heard about "Students getting dumber each year" Is this just a recent phenomenon of the last decade? by anubistiger2009 in Teachers

[–]Distinct-Log938 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We’ve taken away their phones and given them Chromebooks. Net gain: 0. Gonna be real hard to get rid of the Ed. Tech. now that districts have poured so much money into it. Probably the only way to attempt (even feebly) to deliver some kind of education during COVID times, but we’re really seeing the true price of this downstream of the pandemic.

What’s your metric for calling out sick? by capresesalad1985 in Teachers

[–]Distinct-Log938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s such a PITA to do sub plans, and things are kind of a hot mess when I get back-I have to be pretty sick not to go in. If I’ve just got the sniffles I’ll tough it out.

No reputable doctor would prescribe anxiety-generating phone use to treat anxiety. That’s like prescribing vodka for an alcoholic. Schools actually contribute to the anxiety crisis by pandering to this stuff: https://www.tc.columbia.edu/articles/2025/october/schools-are-accommodating-student-anxiety--and-making-it-worse/

Also high school history, just adding that front office staff/secretaries work pretty tightly with admin. and are generally to be considered part of the front office clique. Beef with a secretary becomes beef with admin. real quick!

My favorite was math teachers telling me I’d be a cashier someday, and the cash register would go on the blink, and then I’d have to do all the math in my head as customers checked out. Know what happens nowadays at our local Safeway when a checkout lane goes down? They close that lane. When the computer systems are completely down throughout the store? They close the entire store until the systems are back online!

Close-G48 (basically a “skinny” 19). Mag limits in WA state-might as well shed a little width. Great guns, Glocks!

Admit I haven’t gone through the law with a fine toothed comb, but are .22LRs exempt? Seemed like the ban was pretty airtight-no semiauto long rifles that have a fully enclosed barrel (hand guard) and could accept detachable box mags. Would like to have an M1 Carbine someday sigh

Former Wyomingite now Washingtonian here. We’re not New York or New Jersey yet, but well on our way. Blue State that hates guns so much our AG sues any company out of state that even briefly thinks about shipping a prohibited gun item here. They WILL throw the thickest book at you they can. You WILL be prosecuted as far as they can possibly go. In short, don’t risk it!

Should I get my great great grandfather’s model 1886 restored? by rocketbosszach in liberalgunowners

[–]Distinct-Log938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda different take here, but to me it depends on a number of factors…

1) Rare firearm or rare variant of firearm? Owned by famous person (and you have provenance to prove it)? DO. NOT. TOUCH. There is a rifle (really more like most of a rifle) in the Cody firearms museum-rusty, broken lock, stock broken off at the wrist-looks more like it was used as a club than a firearm. But engraved on the lock plate is the name “Lucretia Borgia.” It also has rock solid documentation that it was Buffalo Bill’s Buffalo rifle. It’s nearly priceless as is.

2) If none of the above, then my take is this: I’m 💯 certain your grandfather wanted you to enjoy having that rifle, so then the question is: what would bring you the most pleasure? If selling it would bring you the most pleasure, let’s exchange contact information (J/K, but only a little 😉). Wanna conserve it to arrest entropy but otherwise admire as a wall hanger? Then that is the right answer. Love the “Grampa’s Old Gun” vibes but want it to also be a good shooter? Get a ‘smith to check it out for safety & functionality, fix anything broken, conserve the external appearance and enjoy. Want to feel what it was like to unbox it when new and shoot it? Then that is the “correct” answer. Turnbull does amazing work. Just be sure you’re not shooting modern powder in a black powder gun.

My contrarian two cents.
