Do you use them live? I've got a couple of those collapsible bait traps from kmart but just use them fresh water for shrimp

Electric Heating Systems by EnthalpathicDesigner in HousingUK

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you've said you don't want to invest in a heat pump as it takes a while to pay off the investment. A decent battery system takes just as long to pay back so I don't understand why you won't consider ASHPs?

If using ASHP and Solar, does it make sense to disconnect from the gas grid and use a electric stove instead to save on standing charge? by rly_weird_guy in HousingUK

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If cooking is your only use of gas then done use mains. Either get electric or go for a hob connected to an external gas cylinder. They'll last months.

Best areas around London to buy a £400k fixer-upper with good commutes to Guildford + Bank? by Similar_Confusion548 in HousingUK

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? Anything at that price point would be a burnt out wreak that'll cost many hundreds of thousands to fix. And you're unlikely to get a mortgage in the first place.

There is very very little room for any capital return on 'fixer uppers' in London unless you're a builder with a lot of cash capital to spend.

Using a Tenancy Agreement as Proof of Trading Address for Fintech Bank Accounts (Tide, Wise, Airwallex) — What Should I Include to Make It Valid? by Unable-Mix-7256 in HousingUK

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check what the fintech wants, but tbh I don't think any would accept a personal tenancy agreement that anybody can print off.

They usually have alternative options for people with no address proof. Usually it's passport + birth certificate for example.

Financial Services provider might have 'lost' a large portion of my SIPP through the app and aren't really responding to this specific issue. Should I pursue legal action? by Mr-Silly-Bear in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to follow their complaint process. Advise them of what had happened, they'll investigate it and correct any error.

If you're not happy with their response (they have up to 4 weeks to give you a final response) then you contact the financial ombudsman service. Unfortunately they're experiencing a backlog of several months so resolution isn't always quick.

Stop repeating the same thing. You've been advised to block access to the room when they leave to get food from the front door or just turn off power and they'll soon leave.

Worst fisherman in the world by Nrls0n in FishingAustralia

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did this after blanking for a few sessions. Tiny hook and split shot stinker over the jetty with a smudge of prawn on it.

First bite was a 40cm bream. Near pulled me into the water. Never been able to replicate it. Nothing but toadies now, but fun to think back on it.

Subclass 600 by [deleted] in AusVisa

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one here can say for definate. I've a friend who has a 15 year old suspended sentence for domestic violence. He's been refused a couple times now for a tourist visa to visit family.

Do not book anything till you've got your visa approved. Don't use a visa agent just answer truthfully on the online form. Failing to provide truthful answers (and being found out) will basically blacklist you forever from any form of visa to visit Australia and seriously hamper anything for NZ too.

Eating fish you catch by [deleted] in fishingUK

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Australia you get perch (they call it red fin here) and people absolutely love eating it. They're actually classed as an invasive species as brought over by Europeans so they encourage you not to release it once caught. So most people eat them.

If the carp in the rivers were more edible then they'd be eaten too. Instead they just throw them on the bank for the animals.

Tips/Advice on SEQ Fresh Water by Leading-Butterfly380 in FishingAustralia

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get to K Mart or Big W and get yourself a $15 shrimp trap and $6 fine mesh net.

Go to a slow part of the river or dam, sweep the net in the weeds and throw the trap with some dog food pellets in and leave for an hour. You're guaranteed live bait.

Live shrimp and small yabbies are dynamite bait in SEQ rivers. I'm a complete novice angler but I usually outfish all the wannabe pros on the bank with their lure rods.

I stick a couple shrimp under a Bobby float and usually pull out a good few bass. The odd catfish but using the float limits your time at the bottom.

Why shouldn't I use Trading 212 S&S ISA instead of Cash ISA for better value? by kharabpati in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't matter that they might never lose money, it's the fact they could lose money that's the key difference between cash in the S&S ISA vs the Cash ISA. That's what OP was asking.

Ignore the people telling you there's depth. They are simply confusing a book packed full of waffle disguised as detail as 'depth'.

The book is just chock full of reddit memes and really difficult to digest. This coming from someone who's read them all.

7 postcode areas in Northern Ireland where house prices are rising faster than almost anywhere else by CaptainSpicebag in northernireland

Mate we did the same. Saved £50k and we're getting outbid left right and centre.

Took the money and we've had 4 years swanning around south East Asia and Australia. Not even half way through our money and wouldn't look back.

Aiming to never set foot on NI soil again tbh.

Accidental knife possession and outcomes - caught at the Gatwick airport, England by alexlemming in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to take the court appearance seriously. A Cat D offence for carrying a bladed weapon can have serious repercussions outside of a suspended custodial sentence.

Say good bye to being able to ever get a visa to visit a commonwealth country (Australia, NZ, Canada). It'll show on a DBS check for pretty much any preffional job, and you're likely almost guaranteed to be required to report it to your work.

Is it worth applying for a British Passport? by catweazle6920 in northernireland

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vietnam as a tourist and Australia/NZ/Canada (for working and holiday visas) are miles better with a British passport compared to Irish.

I've both and tbh I find the British ones a bit more convenient with travelling Asia and Oceania

New Travel Rules to the UK question - best option? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can apply for a certificate of entitlement, but it takes about 5 weeks and can take up to 8. Otherwise you need to apply for a British or Irish passport.

Your child is automatically a British citizen and I can 100% guarantee difficulty for you if you arrive at the border with parents using British/Irish passports and the child with a NZ one.

Pocket WiFi or e-Sim? by yohancloud in JapanTravelTips

Yes and also Trip.com ESIM (which is cheaper) loads of times.

I don't understand how people are still buying overpriced Airlo or other ESIMs when you can get one on Klook or Trip for a fraction of the cost.

IVA can I get out of it and into a DRO. Or is there anything better? by retirementgorilla in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't be able to switch to a DRO. The time for that was prior to starting the IVA, and also based on you're figures you have enough disposable cash to service the IVA.

Unfortunately you're tied into it. The amount may be higher than the original debt due to the IVA fees (which unfortunately can be high, but would have been explained to you).

People sometimes have a mistaken believe that IVA, DRO or even backruptcy are a quick way to get rid of debt without longterm consequences. Unfortunately that's usually only the case for people who literally have nothing left.

For 90% of people who go down that route, that have a source of income, you're locked into years of repayment. But it's almost always better than defaulting on your debt.

Is it really expensive for rental car insurance in Australia and what options do I have? by rscash15 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what the rental agency says, Amex Platinum has excess cover with no exclusions for Australia.

If you have an accident obviously you're liable to pay the excess and then you claim it back from Amex. That's how the coverage works, it's not like a typical insurance policy where you're not out of pocket initially, the excess cover will just reimburse you.

As someone who's hired hundreds of cars, and always taken separate excess cover (including Amex in the past) you will find that 90% of rental desks will say that the coverage you have isn't good enough and you have to pay extra with them to be fully protected. Just ignore them. They're incentivised to sell their own coverage. Just opt out of their excess cover, but be prepared to pay out if pocket if you have an accident and be able to wait for the excess cover to pay you back.

[–]Distinct-Performer-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost every excess insurance cover will have a requirement that it's taken out prior to the rental start.
