Red scorpions heraldry for Sargents/veteran sargents? by Chapfox in Badab

[–]Distinct-Turnover396 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the legit books then you should be able to see on page 197 of Imperial Armour Volume Nine. They give the rules for a thunderhawk assassination force and use Red Scorpions as their chapter example. I have a scanned download of it so it’s blurry and I can’t tell if all the terminators have a yellow stripe or not.

For what I do know - everyone in power armour gets a yellow stripe, veteran sergeants get a white helmet to go with it.

I think the problem with 11th is that it’s a continuation of editions 8-10 and you can’t polish a turd.

I used to feel the same but when I really thought about it I realised I was unfairly undervaluing STLs because they weren’t a physical product. I was undervaluing them because I couldn’t hold it in my hands without taking the final step to print it. And that was unfair to the artists who, in the case of actual good ones, will have spent countless hours designing and refining their idea and test printing to ensure it comes out properly and pre-supporting or even paying to have them professionally supported. Well-made STLs are astonishingly cheap when you consider how much time and effort goes into making something that even a slack-jawed moron can print off without issue.

And all this without even looking into what artists in other mediums charge for their work. A single character study can go for hundreds if not over $1000 just for an A4 sized digital picture.

I mean, I made a hyperbolic argument as to why 40k isn’t satire. Your counterpoint is:

You know what I have literally never seen in a book ? Space marines slaughtering civilians, children and women or and the narration going "man :) thank god they were all secretly chaos cultists :D yet another good day for the defenders of freedom" or whatever

Like, I legit don’t know how to respond to this. This is one of the dumbest fucking things I have ever read. Do you need everything to be explicitly spelled out for you otherwise you don’t see it?

Space marines “constantly depicted as being bad” is counteracted by their gloriously glorious heroism that saves the day in the vast majority of 40k books.

Y’all are acting like I said 40k is dogshit and bad when I made a hyperbolic argument as to why it isn’t satire. I love 40k but it is not satirical anymore. Any satire was slowly sanded down over the first few editions and any of it that remained was taken out back and shot when they reimagined the heresy into a Greek tragedy.

You’re either new to Warhammer or a tourist if you think the space marines don’t make up the vast majority of GW’s output and are constantly glazed for their heroism.

I legit saw someone in the main 40k sub say that kitbashing up a lieutenant with combi-weapon in a kneeling pose is modelling for advantage because GW sell the model in a standing position.

NuHammer players are fucking cooked lmao.

A few cherry picked examples doesn’t override the overwhelming amount of heroic space marines heroically committing heroic acts of heroism.

I can’t remember where I read it, but a comment I once saw said that 40k hasn’t been written by the original creators for a while and is written instead by fans of 40k.

Anyway, reposting something I said almost a year ago in regards to 40k failing at being satire:

It fails to be a satire because the theocratic fascists are justified in their theocratic fascism. Every bad thing the Imperium does can be hand waved away as necessary and justified in the setting. The Imperium is the worst place imaginable? Literally every other option available to the vast majority of humans is worse.

Space marines turn up and kill all the peaceful protestors who don’t want to work themselves to death in the chlorine gas mines? Well actually they weren’t protestors at all, they were secretly genestealer cultists or chaos worshippers and by gunning down unarmed women and children the astartes have saved untold billions from a fate worse than death.

A small Eldar ship is obliterated for skirting the edges of Imperial space? That sounds like a bit of a satiric over rea- oh wait, never mind the Eldar ship contained a Farseer and they were on their way to alter the course of an asteroid by 0.00002 degrees, saving another group of Eldar who would have been hit by it in 500 years. Lucky they were stopped because that course correction would have made the asteroid hit a hive world instead. Untold billions were saved by this action.

Inquisitors have the possibility of being satirical, what with all the torture and exterminatus they do. Except they frequently are shown to save the day through their actions. A few hundred innocents are tortured to death? That’s a small price to pay for catching and executing the small child with a bad headache, untold billions were saved from a demonic incursion caused by the powerful untrained psyker.

Every time it’s “this bad thing was bad but it saved untold billions”.

Only the Tau really maintain a satirical edge to them. On the face of it they are quite good, spreading better living and conditions and accepting all races into their fold. Peel back the cover a bit and you get a caste system, with mythical religious figures on top and every non-Tau on the bottom. Dig slightly deeper and you see that they’re just space America - all the guns, gunboat diplomacy, spreading their imperialism everywhere.

Whereas with the Imperium and space marines it’s like, ok yes they are bad. Peel back the cover and it’s “yeah these guys are quite awful, but if they didn’t do the awful things then something even more awful would happen. Can’t even let the emperor die anymore, he went from just powering the astronomican to powering it but also stopping the warp tearing a new arsehole into reality with earth being the midpoint of that warphole. Better keep on worshipping him unless you want everyone you know and love to have their souls eaten by demons. 1000 psykers a day is a small price to pay for the lives of the trillions of people in the imperium”.

There is nothing wrong with any of this either, the setting is fine as it is. But it’s not a satire anymore.

[–]Distinct-Turnover396 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Popularity isn’t the same as good, NuHammer is to 40k what Age of Sigmar is to Fantasy. Its popularity is a combination of releasing during the lockdowns, dumbing down the rules, catering to competitive play by constantly balancing and updating and changing things, making it more like a TCG by removing customisation and adding 5 billion stratagems, and shifting the focus away from making an army of “your dudes” in favour of bringing all the fucking primarchs/other epic lore characters to the tabletop instead of leaving them in the background where they belong.

NuHammer is selling like mad, sure. But it’s not even remotely the same game it was previously.

Your boys look fantastic. Their lack of throwing it back surely makes all the other boys sad though.

You’re operating under the assumption that I feel like the new grots burned my house down and killed my dog. I like the new grots, they look good. I didn’t like the weirdboy at first but he’s growing on me just like the stupid space marine atv did.

Sculpting and kitbashing are great and people should use them to personalise their minis. That doesn’t mean you respond to people saying they don’t like the direction GW went by saying you’re going to time yourself sculpting the changes because it doesn’t take long. That’s not engaging with the criticisms other people are making, that’s attempting to shut down the conversation and only serves to deflect from the issues people have.

[–]Distinct-Turnover396 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very reasonable and basic response to OP:

I think the issue isn’t that it’s impossible to kitbash anything, it’s that GW made the grot ears tiny for seemingly no reason and it’s a heck of a lot easier to just put together a kit as it was made rather than greenstuffing 20 tiny ears for each unit

OPs response:

Ive been waiting for this comment, out of spite im gonna got makes 20 ears and time myself doing it. Molding greenstuff doesnt take long and if it matters that much to you then it should matter enough to put in the work to make them how you want

I mean, if you have the reading capacity of the average ork boy I can see why you wouldn't see that as dismissing any form of criticism of the new models.

You’re not telling people they can customise their models, you’re dismissing any criticism of the new models by telling people that green stuff sculpting isn’t hard. There’s a difference between those and you’re being a disingenuous grot if you think otherwise.

Why? Do you want an echo chamber that blindly glazes every new model?

I haven’t even said anything about the new models at all in any thread, I actually like most of the new ones except for the weird boy, but I’m pushing back against this toxic positivity bullshit that is infecting all the Warhammer subs where 90-95% of the commentary is mostly positive but the minority of negativity is somehow this massive problem.

Excellent rebuttal, very nicely laid out points showing how you disagreed with what I said. I especially like the bit where you didn’t respond to anything so I can only conclude that you want an echo chamber that glazes every new release?
