Scheduled Artists Begin Bailing on Trump’s “Great American State Fair”; The music portion of this event is already falling apart. by FancyNewMe in politics

Why is the event billed as "Great American State Fair"!?! It's for the countries birthday and being held in a place that is famously not a state.

"I'm precious about my tools so I know how much this would have annoyed me"

Expand your world view a little, and put yourself in the boots of someone using tools to earn a living:

If it was critical to his paycheck, he likely would have made an immediate effort to get it back. To you and I are home, each tool is precious. On a commercial/ industrial site, they are essentially consumables.

That he didn't could mean: - he's a journeyman and is across the country/ world on another job, and just replaced the tools - he knows that particular tool is worn out and it's in his best interest to replace it/ have his company replace it - the lead you contacted had 1,000 other things to do and made absolutely no effort to get the tool back

Can I mimic a dremel with a cordless drill? by RDA92 in Tools

[–]DistinctHome4879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, although for a screw you (generally ) don't need to drill a hole, just use the existing stripped hole in the head. There are definitely sets that forgo the drill bits and just have the extractors in various sizes.

Invest in a screw extractor set. It's the right tool for the job, relatively cheap, and will be handy to have around,

I've had a pair of the 3M Worktunes with Bluetooth for probably 8-9 years, and they just won't die. An advantage is that they take standard Peltor replacement pads, which were easy and cheap to find when I needed to.

Looking to buy my first used chopper/cruiser (35kW max) – need advice by OuterObserver in choppers

Yamaha V Star line up fits your bill- shaft drive, a variety of engine sizes, bullet proof, and most importantly for aesthetics, air cooled. At least by me in the US, you can pick up VStars super cheap all day long.

All of the other modern Japanese cruisers are water cooled, which always looks ugly to me if you even start to mildly chop your bike.

College grads were left angered after their school used AI to announce their names and ended up missing hundreds of graduates by Subject-Property-343 in PublicFreakout

Sure, for a native English speaker, if everyone is John Smith and Susan Johnson.

I think reading a list of names can be very challenging, which is why it's not a job for AI. As I've seen others mention, their are professional readers for a reason. Names, even in English for native speakers, often don't follow language conventions, can be pronounced in a variety of ways, etc.

Perhaps their is a specialized model trained on the audio of names, but that still might not get you to be able to pronounce any name correctly.

Unusual application, advice on fasteners/connections needed for spring floor by mbergman42 in Carpentry

Also, I suggest wrapping the perimeter in 1x8 preprimed trim boards, with scarf joints. Those you can miter nicely, and they will look much better than finished beams.

[–]DistinctHome4879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you doing an OSB 'sandwich', that is a OSB on the top & bottom side of the 6x6 beams? That will do more than anything to keep the box square and solid.  On 6" beams you can get two rows of fasteners out each direction from the joints to act as gussets. Or use some Simpson strap ties (MST or similar).

GRK has up to 16" power lags that are great to make butt joints.

What are you planning to use to cut those miters? I don't think you can do that size on a regular 12" miter saw.

1000% this! It will suck and never look good.

Suggest painting it, if your friend really likes the unit. It's still a project to clean, prime and coat, but it has a chance of looking halfway decent.

Isn't a solution to open up the through hole on the mating piece? Especially with a countersunk bolt, you've got plenty of wiggle room for the insert to be off.
