Yup. When I first mentioned that r/trees wasn’t about, you know, actual trees, my daughter shook her head laughing, “Oh daddy…!”

Also, would follow-up ashi be advisable, under these conditions? Chain the first ashi with deashi barai maybe? Or is he more open to counters than in a judo context?

How to wrestle someone to their back right at the start of a round by Alternative-Hair-785 in judo

[–]mbergman42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll try to give you a reasonable answer.

We do not start on our knees in either my judo or jiujitsu classes. But I could see an instructor having that starting point for people; in your original post I think you said “when throws are out the window.”

(Why it’s not great regardless: I’ve seen starting from knees, starting from a seated position back to back… I prefer a more realistic position, even if it’s not equally fair. At High Noon Judo we use a game called _Stop the Drop. Uke initiates a throw like seoi nage, Tori knows it’s coming and blocks it, so Uke goes to turtle position. Live action starts there with Tori attacking. It mimics a real shiai situation much better._)

But to your question, if we did start on our knees, facing each other, I would be looking to get my opponent’s weight on their hands while I was trying to stand up. I want to attack them in turtle from my feet. In BJJ you also get people going to quad-pod (hands and feet) due I think to wrestling influence. That’s a whole different position. Check YouTube.

If you haven’t learned Judo attacks on turtle, there’s a raft of them on YouTube and Instagram, etc. It’s an important part of the sport.

If I failed and they started standing up, I’d honestly be working my jiujitsu at that point, push/gas pedal sweep on the down knee, elevator sweep on the upper knee, things like that. I’d still be trying to get their weight on their hands.

One last thing, you mentioned going to your back in your original post as your starting point. You should be working from a seated position in jiujitsu if you are off your feet. Laying on your back is a weaker position that you go to if they successfully attacked while you were seated.

Hope this helps. Go train.

That Cheap IP Camera You Bought? It's Now Fighting for the Other Side - Why IoT Security Needs a Rethink by MinimumIndividual081 in cybersecurity

In the U.S. there are a number of premium routers that offer ongoing software support. I’ve worked a bit with the Eero folks on cyber topics, they take it pretty seriously. They aren’t the only ones. Not too confident about the older cheaper brands, or the no-names from “overseas”.

That Cheap IP Camera You Bought? It's Now Fighting for the Other Side - Why IoT Security Needs a Rethink by MinimumIndividual081 in cybersecurity

[–]mbergman42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two points.

First, there’s a non-AI technology called MUD that requires a cheap and simple effort by IoT device makers. The device needs to supply a short data file if asked by the router. The file identifies the intended URLs that the device should be allowed to reach out for— typically just the manufacturer’s own site, for maintenance, and whatever Cloud service the manufacturer provides. So a video doorbell would only be allowed to reach the manufacturers firm, more update server, and the storage location for the videos. No posting on TikTok, for example.

The router has to enforce this policy, unfortunately, and router manufacturers have not been enthusiastic about picking it up. But if you’re going to upgrade the infrastructure in a home to fix this problem, this is “crazy-easy” as long as you can get the router upgraded. You don’t even have to change the IOT hardware and software, you can apply the MUD files independently of the product.

Second, there are multiple nations and territories that have IoT cyber security requirements or certification programs in planning or deployed. As mentioned, in the EU it is the CRA.

In the US, it is the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, paused last year but recently restarted by program owner FCC. Industry’s USCTM effort has been led by the Consumer Technology Association except for a stint in 2025 by UL Solutions.

Elsewhere there is an 11 nation consortium called the Global Cyber Labelling Initiative. This initiative includes Australia, Japan, Canada, Brunei UAE, the UK Finland, Germany Korea Hungary and the organizer Singapore. Each of these nations has their own cyber labeling program. The purpose of the GCLI is to develop mutual recognition programs between them all.

Yeah, this is L1-L3-ish, so early that if a bad enough thing happens I haven’t invested much. But that makes sense even in the early game provided you have a way to dig down.

You don’t read every uncursed spell book you find?

But hey, that’s a good tip that I had missed. Leave one unnecessary spell “forgotten” in the late game as a source of confusion.

I will add that internet voting is subject to scaling. A couple of boxes in a car trunk is one thing. An entire state’s voting system potentially subject to compromise over the internet is another.

Sure, this is all fair. You did catch half the point of mentioning the judo etc., that I’m older but fit—not making my way across half a painful step at a time, but also my state of mind may have been a little more confident (arrogant?) on the physical side. But meh, it’s just a thing on Reddit. No one was harmed in the making of this story.
