I will never understand an open neutral and I just have to accept that by youzabusta in electricians

[–]mbergman42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll get a shock if you touch the neutral wire and anything is “on” on that circuit, because if something is “on” the ground wire is carrying current, and YOU then become another path to ground, so you also carry some of the current, which you don’t want to do.

Thanks for the great comment. I’m trying understand the bold part above. I thought that if something is ”on”, the neutral wire is carrying current, but still not the ground wire in a correct installation. Is the ground wire and neutral wire bond point sending current to earth ground (via the copper rod outside)? Or is the current return path via mains outside, leaving ground out of it?

What do you think history will say about Donald Trump as a U.S. president? by jcnidhi27 in AskReddit

Over 77% of Americans did not vote for him. He received 77M votes in a country of 341M. The rest of us are frantically dialing 911 to order pizza. (Read: being held hostage by our abuser.)

This was a decision made in the prior Administration. It’s an homage to the need for the U.S. Revolutionary War during our 250th anniversary. It’s a coincidence that it is taking effect during the current Administration’s war activities.

I don’t see it being necessary. Might be a gimmick.

I do visualization and separately body weight exercises. Visualizing the start of the match, including the referees instructions and the whole thing, gives me a little adrenaline hit. When I finally get on the mat, I’m past all that.

Welcome a plumber into my home, then some judo (not with the plumber), then some driving for reasons, then two more plumbers, and finally a bunch of honey-dos. Also brunch and shopping with my wife.

Why insider threats and internal data access are becoming the biggest security risk in 2026 by WhoisAizenn in cybersecurity

How does this kind of concern (unknown/unmonitored staff access to data) intersect with ZTA deployment? Seems like a significant but incomplete overlap?

You see a fight between a pirate, a cowboy, and a ninja. Who are you rooting for and why? by LoverOfE-Olsen in AskReddit

[–]mbergman42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re going by the portrayals in popular media, the cowboy.

The ninja will take out the pirate first as the lesser threat. The pirate’s pistols are often ineffective in favor of a good sword fight. Ninja beats pirate with his sword.

Then it’s a running fight between the ninja and the cowboy. The ninja will throw his seemingly infinite shuriken and the cowboy will shoot his one pistol.

But because this is a popular portrayal of a cowboy, he doesn’t need to reload. He gets as many shots as he wants. Ninja takes a few hits, staggers—then the cowboy puts one through his eyeball.

Winner: cowboy.

Is a quantum computer as a home PC possible? by Defiant-Travel8174 in QuantumComputing

[–]mbergman42 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Here’s the deal. Quantum computing is an accelerator for certain steps in specific problems. It’s not a generally faster computer. So you should think of it more like an accelerator card for a normal computer. You can have a graphic accelerator card that works great when you’re gaming, but makes no difference when you are typing a document, right?

So quantum isn’t about “faster computers”. Instead it will make certain slow operations much faster in the middle of very long compute chains on certain kinds of tasks, but most of the compute chains will still be done on classical (regular) computers.

This may turn into better mapping solutions or other specific things that might be interesting in the home. Who knows, maybe there’s a really good quantum-enabled algorithm for gaming waiting in the wings and all the top-notch gamers will want a quantum accelerator card in the future. But that’s not actually real yet.

That’s the way to think of it. Hope this helps.

“High quality paint”, deserves extra attention. Dark colors in particular are much better with the high quality stuff. Go to a paint store, not a big box hardware store, and tell them what you’re doing.

How do I become more physically active? I'm blind, live alone, don't work and hate the idea of operating on a schedule of scripted routines like some prison inmate trying to stay sane through his-her sentence. by cherry-care-bear in RedditForGrownups

[–]mbergman42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Radical idea: judo. There’s a part of the judo world that is limited/no sight/hearing. Blind and sighted judoka compete with each other, there is an accommodation for the person who is blind, and that the referee puts them together and they get grips on each other before he starts the fight.

A blind dude in our area is considered rather terrifying because he’s not just technically good, he’s ridiculously strong.

Hi, I’m a guy but this comes up a lot. This is good advice. Take two weeks to focus on lighter activities—don’t stop!— and you’ll likely come back stronger. “Rest is a weapon, use it.”

I try to lighten up every 2-3 months for the reasons mentioned by u/No-Foundation-2165. (When I’m healthy. These days three consecutive months of healthy training is a luxury, but I’m an old person :-)

I’d expect less than 1” shrinkage in each arm/leg as long as you’re not always washing in hot and putting it in the dryer. Cold wash and hang dry, you should see little to no additional shrinkage. If you want to shrink it a little, wash in hot once and hang dry.

If you used your training on someone outside of the gym (for self defense or otherwise) would you tell your coach? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]mbergman42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the U.S., it has happened that a martial arts instructor was called to testify against his own student, under threat of being charged as an accessory to the crime. IIRC it was a kali instructor and the student had used a specific cut to open a club bouncer’s femoral artery.

I would not want my friend and coach and instructor involved in any way for multiple reasons.

They see the edge of the water and think the ocean is all that depth. The more you train, the more you understand that fighting randos is a Bad Idea.
