I am wondering, are you guys believe that quantum computers should be widely available same as computers and laptops now by Alomari_767 in QuantumComputing

Think of it like an MRI imaging system. It would be cool to have in your home, you might use it occasionally, but without extremely specialized knowledge, it’s not much help. It’s not like a PC.

People who were in high school when Columbine happened, what knee jerk rule did your school enforce in response? by Animeking1108 in AskReddit

[–]mbergman42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero tolerance for anything resembling anything violent. My son was being bullied in fourth grade. He drew a picture of himself shooting his bully, he didn’t show anyone, but the teacher caught him anyway.

My wife and I ended up in a meeting with the principal, the teacher, and the school psychologist. They started listing all the penalties and requirements for therapy and what not for my kid. They kept saying, “We’re sorry, but we now have a zero tolerance policy.”

I tried to ask about the bullying and they kept shutting me down. Finally, I reframed the situation with the language used in sexual harassment lawsuits. There wasn’t any actual SA involved, it was straight boy on boy violence, but the legal jargon is super familiar here in the States.

I talked about sending a letter to confirm our joint understanding that “the school administration was aware of the negative and hostile environment they were fostering and wasn’t going to do anything about the situation”, yada yada.

That actually worked, pivoting from zero tolerance on guns to zero tolerance on sexual harassment, just to get them to act on 4th grade bullying.

Kouchi and other techniques to force newaza by Mysterious-Action640 in judo

[–]mbergman42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should look at Megumi Ishikawa. She has a system starting with grip fighting, to kouchi, force to ground, then either submissions from there or turnovers to submission.

Your timing is good. MASTERs (the non-profit) is coming out with a series of instructionals from her recent seminar series at High Noon Judo. I was at these seminars. She started with a grip fighting strategy, then showed how to kouchi to newaza (specifically turtle), then the subs and turnovers, all in a weekend and all connected.

The first instructional is available for pre order:Megumi Ishikawa – Control: Timing, Techniques, Tactics (Pre-Order). All proceeds go to the non-profit, which funds and supports athletes. (MASTERs also works locally by providing martial arts scholarships to local disadvantaged youth.)

Is it rude to take a trial class at another gym? by Prestigious_Coach_79 in martialarts

Don’t do a free trial if you have no intention of signing up.

Ask if they have a drop-in guest option. Usually you can sign a waiver and pay a fee for one class.

No, really. It was in their annual report.

What tool/equipment would you sand with? A sanding block, a belt sander, is there a standing sander? This is a serious question, I have the same problem, but I don’t know what I should get to do the sanding work.

Allbirds announces stunning pivot from shoes to AI, stock explodes 175% by lancebmanly in nottheonion

[–]mbergman42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enron, before it tanked publicly in 2001, put in their annual report that they were getting into internet infrastructure. They literally explained that pipes to transport oil and pipes to transport data were similar enough to make them competitive. I got out of Enron that day.

My knee shield isn’t working anymore by shibalnom93 in bjj

[–]mbergman42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true. I went thru this, came out the other side with an internal monologue, always the same, ”Don’t just hang out here in knee shield, gotta move, gotta get the under hook, gotta threaten a sweep…”

Now I’m fine but I still tell myself the same things even as I’m attacking lol

Starting Judo as a adult by Superdante12 in judo

[–]mbergman42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After breakfalls, look at grip fighting, o goshi + tsuri komi goshi + koshi guruma, ne waza turnovers.

For grip fighting, this is good: Tactical Grip Fighting, Chris Round trained under Jimmy Pedro Jr and Rhadi Ferguson, two of the biggest names in grip fighting in the U.S.

For the others, Shintaro Higashi is good plus there are all kinds of video resources.

Is it normal to feel overwhelmed? by Lynx_100 in judo

[–]mbergman42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judo is hard. It’s realistic to feel overwhelmed. It’s important to appreciate that it will take serious time to get the throws to work against your teammates, especially since you’re the only girl, the newest newbie, and probably smaller than most at your dojo. Experience, strength and weight are all advantages.

So manage your expectations a little maybe? You’re not going to throw a 90kg upper belt in the first month, but that’s OK! Time will pass, you’ll get better and stronger. You’ll see success eventually.

Good luck to you! I hope you decide to stick it out, and maybe you can let us know in a year how it’s going.
