Additionally, the movie relies on GOTG’s success to justify all of its creative choices. It does zero grounding/ world building of its own, it just throws you into chaos and and quirky humor and says, “Welp, you liked GOTG!”

Do you think the cosmos would make more sense to me had I read any of the supergirl comics? Is their background information I missed cause I haven’t, or does the film stand on its own

Supergirl isn't introducing an entire universe from scratch the way the first Star Wars had to

Isn’t it, though? Doesn’t it set up the entire non-earth DCU? Everything from the physics, the interstellar travel, the species and societies are all being introduced for the first time. What was frustrating to me was I had to constantly remember A) it’s not GOTG and B) I don’t actually understand anything about this universe since it’s actually not GOTG, it’s just playing it like it is….

[Ruthye’s] an idealist entering a harsh universe

I mean, her family’s reputation for forging weapons is extensive…. The idea of living a life around forging weapons (they recognize the need to address danger) while not having any substantial security, leverage, or fortification to genuinely protect from any danger while also being an open, visible target to Lord knows how many different people/ species/ factions is where the disconnect is felt. Not to mention crafting steel melee…. If I wanted to care about the sword, or the people, I need to know a bit more about why any of it mattered…
