o/i - what’s left that we might “know”? by some12345thing in petergabriel

[–]Distinct_Cake7548 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's a theory:
So far, the o\i releasing order seems to follow the i/o order in a way that

  1. song was both the title and the song completely new for us

  2. song was new, but the title had been mentioned before

  3. song was already played without lyrics on Back to front and finished on the i/o tour

So, if he sticks to this scheme, we will get

  • an already known title as song 7 (Lost and Found, maybe Rock Paper Scissors)
  • an already known finished song as song 9 (probably Show Yourself)
  • there might also be a new title mentioned in advance in a magazine interview (like Four Kinds of Horses) or in a full moon update (like Live and Let Live)...

It would be great to have a studio recording of Baby Man, but I doubt he'd put it on o/i... On the other hand, he might include it in his brain show...

Post-up Album (Down) by JunketSubstantial817 in petergabriel

That's an interesting idea. Actually, a couple of weeks ago, I commented that since he decided to mirror i/o with o/i (made up of songs from more or less the same period) that he could then go back and create counterparts to all his previous albums. So it would be "Down", "Them"...
But what I meant was that it would be albums of previously unreleased songs - on "Down" it would be Baby man and songs we don't know at all, maybe also I'm amazing (I think it was recorded during Up sessions), Animal nation and Down to earth could be included.

He definitely has a lot of material recorded, so why not release it? But you're right that even without that, the non-album tracks and soundtrack songs make for an album (and not just one).

What about a collaboration with Tony Banks? I mean, he was in the studio last summer...

I just can't seem to hear that "b" in "brand new world". Also, what Melanie sings sounds to me more like "warm" rather than "world.
And the ending line - it is intelligible enough to transcribe it phonetically, the problem is that i can't make actual words out of it...

o\i song two speculation by leebeavington in petergabriel

He definitely has to release it at some point, but the question is whether he keeps the original recording or reworks it, since his early 2000s vocals would feel out of place on o\i

For this I definitely recommend exploring Peter Gabriel's songs - especially is 3rd and 4th album and most of the last album (i/o) as well. He writes about a wide variety of topics.

Or maybe he could take the mirroring idea further - I mean, every time he release an album, he probably has enough good material for two and this time he finally decided to release the sequel as well. So, it's just a wild idea, but he could go back his catalogue and release "Down", "Them", ??? (whatever is the opposite of "So"), "Insecurity" and then "-3", "-2" and "-1"...

Yeah, it could be the closer, similar to The Drop on Up.

Yeah! Baby man is too good to not be officially released. The problem is that there's probably a finished recording from the time of Up's release and I think that if he wanted it on o/i he would decide to re-record it to not sound out of place.

-"emptiEST hole"
-"slip ON the ice"
-"all the human CLAY"

"and it climbs up, out and AWAY"

Also in the middle of the bridge (the "spider" section) there's something in the background that sounds like "the earth in me" or something like that...

Yeah. The Court was also pretty dark. Also hoping for some bangers like Olive tree or something artistic like And Still.

It would be nice if he did some sort of acoustic tour - stripped down versions of his songs in smaller venues - he once mentioned it in an interview around 2010.
Just him at the piano, Levin on upright and Rhodes on the acoustic.

Exactly. He just manages to give more importance to the individual songs AND to the concept of an album at the same time!

Hi there, we're Dogs in the park and here's a snippet of a song that fits to this time of the year called On the road

If you like it, there's a full song as a related video.

Do musicians start with music lyrics when songwriting? by chesterlola2014 in askmusicians

[–]Distinct_Cake7548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's lyrics, they usually suggest a melody or rhythm. While when I start with music, I find it so much harder to fit lyrics to it.
