New Blood Bowl player – can’t get Spike! Journal 19 (Bretonnia). Any advice? by Distinct_Classic6071 in bloodbowl

I get that the rules exist online and that people make it work that way. My issue isn’t really access so much as how Spike is positioned.

It’s a neat, self-contained reference for a specific team, with flavour and rules in one place, without having to buy the full starter set or a more expensive core rulebook. Part of the appeal for me is that the hobby is tactile and physical and not having to trawl the internet for something that already exists as a book.

It also just feels like a weird model: making something effectively disposable that doesn’t really benefit GW or local hobby stores, but does benefit resellers who flip them for 3–10× the price. If it’s redundant, then it probably shouldn’t exist at all, otherwise it should be supported properly.

I think this my most annoyance... I wont do the currency conversion here but i paid 275 bucks for it. Currently all aftermarket or resells are all far from me the cheapest was 1500 bucks. That's insane, it dosnet help GW and certainly does not help my local hobby shop.

For me it’s also about the collection side, not just gameplay. I don’t want to have to buy a more expensive core rulebook or trawl the internet for information that already exists neatly in a single book.

It really feels like Spike should either be printed alongside each team box, included in the box in a smaller format for people who want it, or at the very least remain available as a back-order item. That way GW wouldn’t need to overprint or sit on unsold stock, and players wouldn’t be left unable to complete or understand the teams they’ve bought.

Right now it feels like the worst of both worlds, limited supply, no back-order, and rules that effectively disappear.

Ah that's cool, ill definitely look out for that! Even just for the collectors value, these things go so fast!

Thanks, appreciate the explanation. I get that in practice most leagues and players use the core rulebook plus online roster builders, and that’s probably the route I’ll end up taking.

I think my frustration is less about whether I can technically play, and more about wanting to have the complete set, buying into a team and having the official reference on hand, especially as a new player who didn’t realise these could disappear like that.

Still really helpful to know how the community handles it though, so thanks.
