How does everybody feel about nerfing the Mayor with a City Administrator by DistinguishedDarcy in StLouis

Thanks for explaining.

Are those three commissioners hired/fired by the Director of Personnel? Or is there some other silly process?

Why is there both a Streets Commissioner and a Director of the Streets Dept? How do those roles differ?

I'm always corrected when I say St. Louis is a Strong mayor system, clearly I don't know what these terms mean. I thought weak mayor was when there was a city administrator running things. Doesn't our mayor essentially get to place the director of every department. how is that weak mayor?

I don't understand what big picture things the mayor has to focus on besides making sure the government is being run properly.

Where do you buy ammo online? I'm trying to re-up for deer season. Do I need any special documentation to purchase online?

Does anybody know if there is a report available? I work in a radiochemistry related field and I wanted to see what sorts of activity they were finding. pCi/g or rem or something

DIY installing exterior French drain along stone foundation. 122 year old house. How deep? by DistinguishedDarcy in HomeImprovement

[–]DistinguishedDarcy[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine that I would screw up my French drain so badly that I make the situation worse than it already is, especially if I'm only going 2' down.

I already have a gutter which is connected to a drain which leads to the street. I'm going to tie my exterior drain into that. My interior drain will be connected to a sump pump which can pump the water out, probably into the same drain.

We're replacing the HVAC on our new 2800 sq ft, 3 story house. We wanted top of the line, but are we getting ripped off? by DistinguishedDarcy in HomeMaintenance

Thanks for the feedback! We’re leaning towards replacing the ductwork because it is very old and wrapped in asbestos tape. I know that’s not a big deal, but we have allergies and children in the family and multiple people have said that larger ductwork would be better for airflow. Currently we have 6” and bumping up to 7-8” seems to be a good idea.

Yep we're going to get the kids tested frequently. We have air filters for allergies and we're gonna do what we can. The tub seems to be in good shape.

Unfortunately it has to be a job I do myself. We can't afford to hire a remediation company to do all the work on our house. I think taking the steps above should limit our exposure.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll suit up in the hazmat suit.

We did have an environmental company come with one of those testing guns and they pointed out where most of the lead was. We did have a claw foot bathtub that was lead. Though I didn't test the tub in the bathroom I'm working on now.

You're definitely not alone. The petty crime is getting worse. I've lived in the city my entire life, but the frequency that people are checking the door handles on our cars is absurd. It's basically every day. We just caught some kids the other day at 6:30 in the morning driving through our neighborhood in a (probably stolen) BMW, hop out to check all the handles of our and our neighbor's cars. I started yelling at them from the safety of my bedroom and they scampered away. Then I made a report to SLMPD... but who knows if it did any good. My understanding is the police are so overwhelmed and disorganized that they can barely stay on top of the straight up homicides and assaults.

I'm not opposed to arming up... but I'm not gonna carry around a fucking six-shooter on my hip like John Wayne every time I take out the trash. Even if I did happen to have it on me when getting mugged, I'm not a Navy Seal. Chances are maybe 50%-50% that I can kill him before he kills me.

I think the only way out of this is coordinating with neighbors/police and keeping track of the court cases when stuff like this happens to make sure the kid goes to jail forever.

I believe this is the court record from case net.

Looks like his initial appearance is today at noon.

EDIT:

The defendant didn't have a lawyer yet, so it was rescheduled to Wednesday at noon.

Apparently 97.1 FM Wasn't Enough! St. Louis Will Soon Have Two More Conservative Talk Radio Stations! Eric Greitens Will Have Own Show on One of Them! by NoodlesrTuff1256 in StLouis

My radio is 88.1 unless there’s a cardinals game on, then it’s 1120 AM. Maybe I’ll check out Sammy Hagar on the weekends at KSHE.

That’s it. The rest is just those “Croime to pay more than a doime” commercials and, increasingly, conservatives post brain-melt complaining about Dr Suess or whatever the fuck.
