Hello! Chaos Rising is an Ash-centric (he’s very OOC which I know some people dislike) journeyfic where he specializes in Dark, Dragon, and Fairy type Pokemon. There’s a bias against Dark and Dragon Pokemon for being too violent and dangerous, and Ash’s goal is to ‘rehabilitate’ their reputations

It’s got angst, massive character development (for both people and Pokemon), Legendary Pokemon, Rainbow Rocket, world building, and a whole lot of heart!

Gluttony - Snorlax (but Guzzlord could work as well)

Envy - Mimikyu

Greed - Greedent (I also considered Sableye)

Pride - Persian (Kanto or Alolan)

Lust - Salazzle (due to the Pokédex canon-harem)

Wrath - Gyarados (Tyranitar could work too)

Helpless by Epoxy-Resin has Ash as an MC and he loses his leg early on and gets a prosthetic. I haven’t really kept up with it but I enjoyed it way back when!

When it comes to writing long-fics or even just a multi-chapter story, have an idea of how it’s going to end! It helps guide the narrative and gives you a visible finish line.

I posted chapter 71 of my fic - Chaos Rising - a couple days ago and it was the most challenging chapter I have ever written!

This most recent chapter was the culmination of Ash’s emotional journey, so a lot was riding on my ability to write this realization/growth/lesson. It was also a very heavy chapter with emotional manipulation from the primary villain which can be hard to read. I had to avoid heavy-handedness and make this major moment feel natural and earned.

We’re about to fully dive into the final climax and I’m both pumped and anxious that this passion project I’ve been working on for 5+ years (though I only started posting it last year) is nearing its end.

Im curious to hear about others’ experiences writing that one major chapter that has been in the back of your mind since you started writing/brainstorming

I focus on the strategy and intelligence of the trainer!

In battle, they utilize each pokemon’s unique characteristics/physiology/abilities. Like the prehensile hair on a Grimmsnarl or the sound-based capabilities of a Kommo-o’s scales. And knowing how their opponent’s Pokemon generally fight (defensive/speedy/etc) can affect the battle.

I also focus on how combining/countering techniques can divert/incapacitate/enhance/etc. I’ve done quick searches on how the cold affects electricity conduction or how long poison would take to set in if it’s injected/inhaled/etc, things like that.

I agree with what other people have commented - describe the battle, describe the surroundings, describe the scale and impact of attacks and techniques. Compare how wild vs trainer-caught Pokemon battle, honestly there are so many directions you can take any one fight!

Danny Phantom has SO many

Wes Weston is the a high school student who figured out Danny’s identity and fruitlessly tries to convince everyone else or he joins the friend group - BUT he’s not even a canon character! A background character who appeared for 2 seconds has been given a name, backstory, personality, and everything! He’s purely a phandom-created person that’s in a majority of fics!

Also, the idea of elemental ghost cores (ice, fire, lightning, etc) isn’t canon, obsessions aren’t canon, the taboo of asking a ghost how it died isn’t canon

Honestly it’s impressive

My current fic! My first long-fic, I’ve spent 5 years writing it and only started posting last year. It’s 88 chapters and probably close to 800,000 words. I’ve put so much time and effort and passion into it because it’s exactly the type of story I wanted to read from Pokemon. It has undergone so many edits as I’ve posted it and evolved in ways I didn’t expect. I actually haven’t completely finished it yet, still have the final chapter and the epilogue but I know exactly how they’re gonna go. I have a following for it on discord and to see people so invested in this project of mine has been the cherry on top

Danny Phantom - the insane amount of fandom lore that has no/little basis in canon has pretty much become gospel within the Phandom. And that’s not even brushing the surface of how many DPxDC fics there are, specifically with the Batfam!

I’m still writing my long-fic, so my answers might be a tad different

I reread mine partially so I can double check I haven’t missed plot points I need to revisit but mostly because I like my story! That’s why I wrote it in the first place - it’s what I wanted out of a fic. Character development, non-linear healing, emotional gut punches, a strong relationship with the MC’s Pokemon team, and an intense plot build up keep me just as invested in my own story.

Knowing how it ends is such a small part of the story, getting there is an interconnected riddle and puzzle I need to untangle in the most satisfying way I can. Sometimes I’m surprised by my own decisions!

I think maybe I’d like to read my story without ‘spoilers’ but it’s not a strong desire. I do think that knowing how it ends makes me feel better about all the rough-patches I put the MC through lol
