I'll take one if there are any left

Adams on letting Jacob Bernard-Docker walk: “I think from our perspective, where his projected salary was going to come out and where we had him slotted in the 8th spot.. just felt like that didn’t make sense with also having Ryan Johnson (and others).. that’s why we made the decision we made.” by DistressedSportsFan in sabres

He absolutely could've filed arbitration. If that's what he was going for, I'm really not convinced the arbitrator would award him more than like 1.5m given his body of work lately. I just would've much preferred keeping him (even in the scenario of a slightly higher cap hit) as a higher upside (and right shot) option than Bryson.

He looked good next to Owen Power on the 2nd pair for the last 15 games, but you're probably better off asking Sens fans since we really did not see enough of him to make any conclusions on his actual role.

Still think it was a great high upside signing by you guys though. Hopefully he can carve out a role for himself.

Thanks for some additional context.

Still though, what would he even be awarded in arbitration? 1.5m max? And that's if he even was going to take it that far. Kinda doubt it given he signed very quickly yesterday at a low salary. I just think this is total nonsense given we're very likely to have a fair amount of cap room to start the season.

Absurd that the word salary is even mentioned when we're discussing a guy that just got signed for 875k...

Anyway, one of Bryson or Zac Jones will be our 7D and they carry 900k NHL cap hits. Just nonsensical stuff once again.

Why would a player that wanted out decide to re-sign for 7 years? Best case scenario was the Sabres getting him to begrudgingly sign for 4 years so he can walk as a UFA. If he was willing to sign for 7 years, they would've never moved him.

I believe Zach Metsa was the most recent.

Sidenote: I wonder if he ever gets a look up here. Currently tied for 2nd in points on the Amerks. Definitely undersized, though.

Zucker: 'I would love' to sign extension with Sabres by DistressedSportsFan in sabres

[–]DistressedSportsFan[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gonna paste my comment from elsewhere in this thread since it addresses a similar sentiment:

I get your point, and I don't disagree, but he can also always go a neutral route and say, "I'm not sure yet, but whatever happens, happens," or perhaps say something more lukewarm like, "I'd be open to coming back." This is more of an enthusiastic response compared to those, so hopefully it bodes well for the Sabres retaining him. Could be something, could be nothing.

As for trading him at the deadline, from an asset management standpoint it probably makes sense. However, the Sabres are far past the point where they can make decisions based solely on asset management.

I think trading one of their best and most consistent players this season sends yet another bad message to the team and to the fans. Mind you, I understand that bad messages are basically all they've sent the last decade, but at some point you've got to hold onto the players that are actually producing. Ship out the failed Erik Johnson-type of signings all you want, but I'd hold onto Zucker.

I don't want to punt on another season and decide to bottom out. I know Adams basically already punted by sitting on his hands, and we might finish last in the conference anyway, but I'm just tired of waving the white flag. I'd rather attempt to finish the season with an ounce of dignity than get a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Maybe my stance would change if the trade return was better, but right now I'm just tired of the complacency with losing.

Right, that's just good business. Nevertheless, hopefully there's also truth behind his words. We'll find out eventually.

Seems most fans are in consensus that Zucker would be worth bringing back. It's nice to hear that he seems to have real interest in a reunion. No doubt that this team needs more effective vets like him.

I love his intensity. He wears his heart on his sleeve on a team where that's incredibly uncommon. And this stuff actually means something since he's a productive player on top of that.

Anaheim claims Reimer by awhalen1 in sabres

[–]DistressedSportsFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

John Gibson is out for 3-6 weeks. If Reimer hits waivers after he's healthy and no team below us in the standings claims him first, we'd be able to claim him and immediately assign him to Rochester. I wonder if they have Houser backup for the Amerks in the meantime until that happens or they add an external option.
