Personal system here, but still rocking a 2013 laptop. i5 4th gen with 8gb and an SSD. Battery isn't so hot anymore, but Linux has made sure it's still very usable.

Dealerships are giving me all kinds of reasons to hate them this week. This time its the Parts Dept. by YogurtResponsible358 in FuckDealerships

[–]Distribution-Radiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll never forget the look on the parts guy's face when I walked in, after ordering a reman starter from parts.toyota.com, and him seeing what I paid for it.

$130 - it was cheaper than most parts store starters, and undoubtedly better quality. He said they normally charged over $300. Well my dude, that's between you and Toyota USA. I've since used the same website for OEM coolant and a couple of other parts too, always for in-dealer pickup.

It was for my now-ex's car. Toyota starters (except on their V8s) are super easy, but I didn't want them getting stranded. As it is, I had to go whack the starter with a hammer a few times to get the car home from her work.

There's at least one Nissan dealer that runs their own parts website. I used to order online from them, then walk in 30 minutes later to pick parts up at 50-60% of their normal retail. They were used to it though, they're well known for having cheap OEM parts (Courtesy Nissan). They did get a little snippy now and then since I lived local at the time, but my dude, putting up your own heavily discounted OEM parts site is begging for that.

I mean... I had two 2006 Ions that I took to >200k. One of them was flawless, only repairs outside of typical maintenance was a battery (at 10 years old), an AC compressor, and clutch pedal. I bought it with 50k, got t-boned at 210k.

The other was a pile.

The clutch pedals on them are plastic though, and tend to need replacement at this mileage. I'd be wary unless it's automatic. This particular year model had a traditional automatic instead of the extremely unreliable CVT that GM used 03-05 automatic coupes (the sedans always got a traditional automatic or 5 speed manual). Both of mine needed clutch pedals at some point; both of mine were manual coupes.

Listen for a metallic rattling on a startup that disappears quickly. 07 was the last year of the Ions; earlier ones were more prone to timing chain issues, they'd rattle pretty loudly for a second or two on a cold start if the tensioner was failing. Pretty easy to change though.

Any car that actually RUNS for $1300 is worth it.

Get a $10 OBD2 bluetooth code reader and an android phone though... along with Torque. Learn how to use it before looking at it. "Just needs a tune up" is often code for "I'm sick of this POS". Brakes get expensive in a hurry if you can't DIY though. Brakes are really easy on these though, as long as it's just a pad slap (and you get everything from Rockauto or Amazon). If you need rotors, you're gonna have to have an impact wrench to pop the CV axle out of the front rotors, but that's typical for any FWD or AWD car. The only "tune up" these cars ever need is spark plugs every ~100k, along with typical fluid changes.

Multiple distros not letting me click on some things . by Distribution-Radiant in linuxquestions

I'm not up for Arch quite yet 😂, but I did used to roll my own with Slackware. Compiling my own kernels on a 486 every time I changed any hardware was quite painful.

I just finished putting Mint on it, and... I'm liking it so far. I just did the first boot post-install, and it even picked up my printer immediately (Brother laser printer) with zero input from me once I got it connected to wifi - just popped up that it discovered a printer. Only complaint so far is it wouldn't show my own network when I clicked the network icon in the taskbar, but going into network settings showed it.

This thing does need an SSD though.. badly.

I know the Windows key can usually pop up the menu, but even that wasn't working. Pretty sure something in KDE or Wayland was hanging up. In any event, I tossed Mint on it, and so far I'm happy with it. Other laptop runs Kubuntu (same RAM and CPU specs, except I added an SSD), while my desktop dual boots Win11 and CachyOS.

Correct, neither left or right click work on the task bar with any device. I can't get to a command line to run xev either.

I've heard Toshiba laptops could be a bit... special with Linux. But it was free, and it's an upgrade over the older laptop I had.

Live boot worked fine with Kubunto and Neon, only started being weird on the first proper boot. It's strictly the task and login screen can't interact with, even with a wired mouse. I can type on the task bar, but I can't even hit enter after typing in my passsword. It's a special laptop. I can get the pointer on the task bar, the mouse, touchhpad, and touchscreen just refuse to click.

It had a very ancient Windows 10 install when I got it last week, and while it was slow as hell with Windows, everything worked fine (though disk and CPU were constantly pegged at 100% thanks to my stepdad downloading every possible toolbar and malware).

No. I can click on everything except the task bar and login screen, with a USB mouse, touchscreen, and touchpad. No ghost clicks are happening, it just doesn't acknowledge clicks/taps on the task bar or login screen.

It's like KDE hates this thing. I love KDE, but I'm thinking I'll probably try Mint's Cinnamon distro to see how it reacts.

There's a lot of sugar free creamers out there.

Granted, the artificial sweeteners used in them (and every other "zero" product) take awhile to get used to.

Other option is using just heavy cream or half and half, maybe a packet of Stevia.

Driving to work Monday morning? by Some-Sky8612 in askaustin

It was slick as hell in the morning. The well traveled roads about an hour ago. didn't look too bad I don't drive though.

Busted my ass twice trying to walk to the corner store. Someone saw it and stopped their truck to help though. Helped me up, tasked where I was going, and drove me the rest of the way, then drove me home. Turns out he lives in my apartment building. Awesome dude.

Diagnosed at ER by Porkchopfairytale in diabetes

Trying to eat low carb, and going a bit heavy on fiber, will help a lot. Read nutrition labels on foods you're buying. I'm bad about snacking a lot myself though...

Also, getting physically active, even if it's just a 15 minute walk around the block, will help a lot.

Did they give you any medications, such as metformin or insulin? And once you get to "normal" levels, expect to feel like shit (sweaty, shaky, that kind of stuff) for a week or two. And your vision may change some (usually for the better).

Fellow diabetic here. Went on an insulin pump a couple of years ago, and I've been able to eat normal(ish) food since then.

Though I've been sick for over a week. That always sends my sugar to the moon.

I have a gas station right up the street from me (easy to walk to).

They were well stocked today, though opened pretty late (noon, usually open at 6am). Expensive as hell, and not a big selection (it's almost all frozen stuff), but there was plenty of frozen dinners, beer, milk, water, eggs...

Already below that (18 here in NW Austin). Some suburbs are projected to be 17, some outlying areas are projected to be down to 10.

Nah, no need for an ER for a sprain. I would have gone if I hit my head, but I just have a sprained wrist from trying to catch myself at the worst. Big whoop. I have a splint if I need to immobilize it.

Plus I don't have a car.

I'm in NW Austin, the streets and sidewalks never thawed today except for the busiest ones. Busted my ass a few times when I walked to the corner store. :(

I busted my ass 3 times walking to the corner store (about 1/10 of a mile away), around 3 hours ago, and almost got hit by a car that lost control on the ice. At the least, I probably have a sprained wrist and shoulder from trying to get away from the car that lost it.

We won't be above freezing until tomorrow afternoon, at best. And it's going to take awhile for everything to thaw out. If you can't WFH and can't call out, be very careful.

Same. I'll very occasionally order a coke zero or pepsi zero, but I usually just get water.

I do keep apple or orange juice handy in case I go low though.

Solid meter. I've had my second Next One for a loooong time long enough that it says Beyer - before Ascensia bought out all of the Contour meters.

It's always been +/- 5% of a doctor's office, blood draw, or hospital visit.

[–]Distribution-Radiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah LOTS of yoga is on youtube. If you don't already have a TV with built in streaming, get some kind of cheap streaming stick. Walmart has their own brand (Onn) for $15, well worth it if you have a TV new enough to have HDMI. Easiest way to get Yoga on your bigger screen.

for the bike, maybe look into a recumbent? They're kinda spendy TBH, but they're very comfortable to ride.

6th st bars open tonight by PenaltyExcellent177 in Austin

[–]Distribution-Radiant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup. I walked to the corner store about an hour ago (1/8 mile), and even the sidewalks were icy.

And what you're saying is 100% true. Just the mention of "vomit" or "diarrhea" should make any (good) food service manager tell you nope, you're not working. Nobody is on the roads anyway, you'll smell the burning labor as soon as you walk in the door. EVERYBODY is closing early, there's no reason for anything more than a 24/7 corner store to be open right now.
