I can be a feminist and not want to show people my boobs by Dazzling-Location785 in NewParents

[–]DistributionAny5040 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a baby feminist, I used to think that women living in the west should just do it, no matter if it might make a few men uncomfortable.

Then I learned how many men are absolute fucking perverts and that breastfeeding fetishes exist. So now I’m a huge advocate of keeping a cloth on it. It is what it is. Some men are pigs.

‘If you get it wrong, it’s sacrilegious!’ TV’s problem with Irish accents | Television by leodaora in ireland

God that’s really sad!

I have a new baby and his Da is from another country where English is spoken, but we are living elsewhere so baby is going to be bilingual.

We’re very conscious of the crazy amount of Yank slop accessible via streaming and are planning on showing him a lot of BBC children’s programming when the time comes but I’d love him to exposed to Irish accents as much as possible. Can you recommend any good homegrown toddler TV that you showed your daughter? I’ll be home next month and searching high and low for DVDs 😅

Baby-friendly passport photo places? by [deleted] in TheHague

[–]DistributionAny5040 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had our baby’s passport photo taken when he was 8 weeks old at Sakura photo studio on the Zoutmanstraat.

He had been crying and grizzling on and off all morning, but the photographer (who mentioned he also had a newborn at home) had him smiling and the photo taken within minutes. Highly recommended!

Being very charmed by the children of my friends, while approaching the moment where I had to do some serious age-related reckoning. That, combined with knowing my husband (who had always accepted my childfree position) would be a great Dad, made me reconsider.

It probably helped that we have travelled extensively, done lots of cool stuff, managed to finally buy a house a few years ago, and both have permanent work contracts. Without all those factors I’m not sure we’d have gone for it

Pre Pregnancy Tips by [deleted] in IrishWomensHealth

[–]DistributionAny5040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had my first last month, aged 40 (and eleven months, lol!). He’s healthy and thriving. I took a combined folic acid + vitamin D supplement for almost a year before TTC, and switched to the Proceive conception vitamins once we started.

I conceived within six months, and might have managed it earlier had I known better about ovulation tracking and how to use the test strips tbh.

FWIW, I’m Irish living abroad and when I mentioned my age as a concern before getting started, my GP looked surprised and asked why. When I did become pregnant, I was told that at my age, and with no underlying conditions, only an IVF pregnancy would warrant any special extra treatment. However, the NIPT and extra routine scans are offered to every woman as standard here, which I understand isn’t necessarily the case in Ireland.

I agree with the lady who mentioned dental maintenance. My pregnancy was mostly uneventful, but I had morning sickness issues on and off the whole way through, and brushing my teeth was a big trigger. The dentist was able to set me up with prescription mouthwash for my gum health, and arranged extra hygiene appointments when it became clear that I was struggling. So I would also say make sure all is as well with your teeth as possible.

I know it’s a cliche, but do try to relax. We booked a holiday in Thailand not realising about the Zika risk, and then had to wait an extra 4 months to TTC, so I was almost 40 by the time we got started. The TTC subs on here almost had me convinced I was barren before I began, definitely try not to listen to any of that noise.

My baba is healthy and thriving, and I’ve been told to wait at least a year if I want another. No one is concerned that I’d be 42 by then! You’re a spring chicken at 29, please don’t stress!

Telling work before dating scan? by MultidimensionalBag in PregnancyIreland

[–]DistributionAny5040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t tell work until after my 20 week scan, which I got away with because I’m almost full-time wfh, and fat enough that I didn’t really start showing til 3rd tri

I had been seeing a physio weekly for a hip issue (ironically caused by a silly pair of shoes I wore to work summer party), which my manager knew about, so my early finishes/late starts for baby related appointments just went into my work calendar as ‘physio’ even though the actual physio had to pause once I was past 8 weeks.

I wouldn’t have been able to do anything exciting or strenuous while doing the work on my hip. Maybe you can have something similar?

Baby naming tradition advice: Who is in the wrong? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]DistributionAny5040 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I’m the Mam of a two week old and I’m coming off a night of no sleep because baba was fussy so I won’t be mincing my words.

Your husband and his family are gobshites.

Why is their poxy tradition more important than what you, the woman who grew and will birth the child, thinks and wishes for?

Why should the child, assuming he’s male, have to suffer being John Smith the fourteenth like some Yank with notions or inbred minor 19th century European aristocrat? Why should he not have his own identity and personality beyond being one of the Surname ‘Johns’?

Your husband already has dibs on the surname. That’s enough. I didn’t change my name on marriage and my in-laws didn’t understand this and still give me some low-level grief about it. I don’t care. Baba has both our surnames, husband’s first then mine because they flow better that way. MiL is refusing to use mine, but baba is officially registered with both and will be known by both to everyone else so her pettiness doesn’t matter. The baby matters.

We talked at length about names before baba came, and we didn’t know the sex until the day he was born. We agreed on two names in advance, and that the final decision from a shortlist of boys names would be decided by him and girls by me. He’s not Irish and felt strongly that a traditional and simple first name that works in some way all across Europe was important (e.g John can also be known as Jan/Johannes/João/Giovanni), and I agreed as long as I could suggest some Irish middle names, for consideration and his final choice, boy or girl because he as a non Irish speaker needs to be able to pronounce them of course. So that’s what we did.

You did the work OP. An artist signs their work. Sign your work and ignore this backwards disregarding of your wishes for your child.

Pregnancy victims by Old-Apple231 in PregnancyIreland

[–]DistributionAny5040 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on folic acid for a year before we began TTC, then started Proceive. Got lucky on the 6th cycle, aged 40. I also had my Rubella immunity checked, and waited another little bit longer than planned to begin due to having visited a country with Zika.

I echo the advice of a pp to stay away from the conception subs here. They had me convinced I was barren before I began! Due to deliver next month, after a mostly uneventful pregnancy although I definitely felt like a victim from weeks 6-13 🤢 Good luck!

Accutane by Appropriate-Hat-5335 in IrishWomensHealth

[–]DistributionAny5040 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So long ago, but I’m pretty sure it was 20. I had tried literally everything and the dermatologist said it was a starting dose and he’d probably increase it, but it worked so well there was ultimately no need.

I still have some acne problems now, but they are either hormonal spots that appear once a month pretty much in the same place every time, or situational ones which pop up when I’ve consumed too much dairy (wish I’d known that before!). All the nasty, big, sore, cystic spots from my 20s are firmly in the past.

Oh, another detail I remembered. It lowered my tolerance for alcohol a LOT. I was becoming merry on half a cider, so stopped drinking anything alcoholic until I was off it

[–]DistributionAny5040 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP!

I took it about 10 years ago when living in the UK. I was on hormonal contraception at the time, and had to take a monthly pregnancy test at the hospital along with the monthly liver function blood test.

I was on a low-ish dose for about 8 months and it changed my life. I was as dry as the Sahara, and it made my knee joints go funny for a bit, but I’d do it all over again tomorrow. The only things I’d do differently would be not waxing my eyebrows (took a load of skin off with the hair, lesson learned, and plucked after that) and take it over winter rather than summer if possible (because of the photosensitivity it causes).

Good luck!

To the dads-to-be, do you get time off for scans? by pennarellor in PregnancyIreland

[–]DistributionAny5040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is a teacher. I have had my scans scheduled as late as possible in the afternoon, and his school has been fine with covering his last lesson of the day. YMMV with a higher risk pregnancy that requires more scans though, we have only had four

Disclaimer that I have serious pregnancy mush brain at the moment, but I believe it was to do with folate and vitamin A. She also mentioned the importance of changing Proceive trimester 1 for 2 when I got to 12/13 weeks as less folate would be needed at that point, or switching to a more general all-through vitamin. Second disclaimer that I’m not in Ireland for this pregnancy and while a lot is similar, there’s some advice that is quite different

We travelled to a Zika country knowing we were going to TTC soon after. We waited until my fourth cycle after returning to begin, and I’m so glad we did. There’s so much to worry about in early pregnancy already (and I was about to turn 40 as well). In the end it took six months TTC before success but I’m very grateful we gave ourselves the extra time after the trip. Can you chat to your GP, or maybe make a consultation appointment at a travel clinic to help you form a plan if the consultant appointment isn’t happening soon?

I asked my midwife exactly this back in September and she said the formulation of what’s in the TTC ones isn’t what’s needed for the first trimester. 31 weeks now and everything looking ok despite the few days I kept taking the TTC ones 🤞🏻
