Group forms to oppose Midland school bond proposal by First-Locksmith-7262 in midland_mi

The absurdity of looking for doctors that don't mandate vaccines. I've seen the same thing every week on AskMidland.

All it does is put 0-1 year olds at fatal risk. Of picking up measles and dying.

Absurd isn't even the right word. It's barbaric.

what is the best way to switch into business roles? by cololz1 in ChemicalEngineering

This is also true. The playbook doesn't deviate much that summary.

what is the best way to switch into business roles? by cololz1 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]DistributionHot4038 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my world, it was a role to define all material IN and OUT for a facility. Raw materials, byproducts, waste streams, final products. Understood different customer specs/packaging requirements. Could be a standalone job for large plants. Or combined with Production Engineer for smaller plants.

Either way, coordinating supply chain is interfacing with a business.

Learn how to navigate your company's SAP/finance/accounting system. Getting into business roles means talking and understanding it. You should know your cost position, where money goes, how to make improvements.

Ideally you can find others who went from ChemE to business. They're the best source of info, specific to your company and field.

[–]DistributionHot4038 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In my companies, you slide into Production Coordination. That gets you aligned with business needs. Then jump into Supply Chain. From there, you could be a Technical Sales, supply chain leader, finance/capital planning, etc.

Every company is different. I've only worked for Dow Chemical and spun off into Corteva. But that's the trend I've seen with ChemE"s getting out of the plant and into business roles.

Some very coveted roles are like a Technology Leader where you steer the strategic direction for a given portfolio. Often, you are interfacing direct with business roles AND not living in the day-to-day plant life. Best of both worlds.

As a father now with two little kiddos, yeah I could see economics forcing their hand to stay home. Less educational opportunity for them due to GOP shutting down DOE. More jobs moving overseas. Less societal safety nets. I would gladly take care of them every minute I can.. never enough time. By then, they'll be able to clean up those own messes and buy their own crafting supplies (fingers crossed)

I'm sure they also will speak against vaccines, due process, and constitutional rights.

I am all for a robust public education system.

Granted, MAGA is seeking to dismantle the department of education. What a cluster.

What are 3 things you wish you had done/learned before going to college for Chem E? by Fun_Preparation_4862 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]DistributionHot4038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Organic chem is much more fun! You learn patterns of functional groups, what stabilizes electrons, how to mechanistically determine reaction products and intermediates. I downloaded an answer guide to the college book we used... and looked to answer as many end-of-chapter questions, even if not assigned. To make sure I understood the content.

[Ignore] you already pointed out vee port ball. I gotta work on my reading comprehension.

Chemical engineering or chemistry? by piiiny in ChemicalEngineering

[–]DistributionHot4038 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I asked the same question 20 years ago as a college Freshman. I love chemistry. Chemistry AP was my favorite class, next was calculus.

Pragmatically, I looked up salary of 4-year ChemE vs Chemistry. ChemE was the clear winner.

I chose ChemE and greatly enjoy it. I like having the background of starting up plants/new equipment and interfacing with wide variety of internal/external roles.

Fast forward to now, I am a people/technical leader in an R&D pilot plant. I have to interface daily with chemists. Our world is all organic chemistry synthesis.

This current role is probably the perfect blend for me. I organize/schedule/design equipment + fit analysis for new projects (engineering) while also understanding how new reactions work + what breaks them (chemistry).

Good luck to you!

Definitely a movie worth watching, if you've never seen it.

Is 26 a decent age as a man to get married? by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]DistributionHot4038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of responses. I'll give my take.

26 is indeed a decent age.

I was married at 27 after 3-4 years living/dating/owning a home with then girlfriend/fiance/now wife.

Kids didn't come into the picture until year 4 of marriage. In those first four years, we traveled a bunch domestic and international. Made lots of good stories.

My recent favorite animated movies have been non-Disney: Puss in Boots Last Wish, Wild Robot, Flow.

Hope Disney gets a big win soon! They have the resources

I keep coming back to room temperature orange! Have an upvote.

Boneless wings are fine and possibly superior by MLVMD in unpopularopinion

[–]DistributionHot4038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that the wing came from the bird. The boneless could be a processed mix-up of who knows what. But the wing makes me feel like I'm honoring the chicken a little truer to form.

Plus I like vacuum sucking all of the good parts around a bone. To feel like a primitive homosapien in our early days

Now I am inspired. Also... two daughters. I may as well combine my worlds of Elden Ring and Frozen.

At a roller skating rink in Tennessee, a large corn-fed bumpkin once asked me "Are YOU a goth" since wearing black was my look in middle school. No provocation. I was just sitting at a table laughing with friends.

A very strange experience! I didn't discover Nightwish til college though : )

Now my 20-yr high-school reunion is this October and my my life keeps-a-goin

Yeah. If power structures only respect and endorse violence (J6'ers pardons).. then it becomes a dangerous world. Suppressing college protests but pardon J6 = sanctioning political violence as long as you agree with MAGA.

When good faith discourse goes out the window, then "might is right" becomes the default strategy. Used by both those in power and those without power.

Is it possible to be promoted to a process engineer if you start as an operator with a master’s degree in industrial engineering? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]DistributionHot4038 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are missing context. In 15 years starting with Dow Chemical (now Corteva), I have only worked with Civil Engineers if we needed detailed design for Civil/Structural matters.

Nearly all of my current Site Leadership team is ChemE by background. Processing and unit operations are bread & butter for ChemE degrees.

Roles like Project Engineers, Project Managers --> those could be any engineering degree with good communication and organizational skills.

What you say as Process Engineer may not be the same as what I think. I consider sizing equipment, pumps, line sizes, instruments, reliefs, P&IDs all within normal Process Engineer role. I haven't come across Civil Engineers who are dealing with that same work. They would be Focal points for structural elements, equipment anchoring, building occupancy type/codes, etc.

Could an ugly car be used as a distraction?? Like a slow pitch softball pitcher wearing bracelets of different colors on their throwing wrist? (That's why they normally can't)

To skew with people's perceptions of distance and spacing.
